Small thing, but I feel like the Unova section should have mentioned all the alternate encounter methods. It added a ton of variety into what you could find and was often really fun to track down. Shaking grass, ripple spots, and ESPECIALLY Hidden Grottos. Honestly, I liked that way of finding a more varied and powerful selection of Pokemon more than I like Max Raid Battles and the like
@jaretco64232 жыл бұрын
And don't forget TM's are unlimited now.
@jrlaps5212 жыл бұрын
I liked how some of the Pokémon in Unova were pseudo version exclusives with the shaking spots. ie Sawk and Throh. You had Sawk in Black in normal grass and Throh in White, and with the shaking spots you had a 5% encounter chance for the opposite one alongside the super common 95% Audino. They also usually had rare Pokémon and evolved forms of the normal grass Pokémon in the area, which was also really cool

Out of all these features, I think there's a three way tie between Abilities, the Physical-Special split and everything going on with the bottom screen in gen 6. DexNav is one of the biggest for me. Not only did the ability to get a Pokémon with different moves and abilities make catching wayyy more dynamic of an experience, but the display of all available Pokémon in the area with the silhouettes filled out as you caught them made Dex completion not only easier, but something I felt more compelled to do; leaving an area but then realizing I only had one more to catch there made me want to stick around and finish it. Something that I really wish you mentioned for Gen 2 was battle facilities. Pokémon Crystal introduced the Battle Tower, a special facility where you can battle waves of tough trainers with a proper competitive edge. With the sole exception of the Let’s Go games, this feature has been in every single mainline game since in some way, shape or form, and paved the way for the ever-popular Battle Frontier in Emerald and Platinum.

I also like the changes of experience points to where u get alot more points and plus with Audino and items like Lucky Egg or something else that doubles or triples your experience points, u can level up your Pokemons way faster now. HMs are cool, using your party to navigate the world, but when they almost universally suck in battle (rock smash is 20 base power, but atleast surf, fly, and strength are 80+ base power) you end up with HM slaves wasting valuable party space. I definitely like the new system better where you still unlock the abilities but have a summon HM user menu instead. (Ride pokemon are cool, but some of the animations are questionable, like lots of extra safety harnesses or being cradled by a machamp)
@SagaciousSilence2 жыл бұрын

2:15 I actually bred once during the story. In Sun I just could no longer justify to have a Mareanie without Merciless on my team after a while. And catching one is hard enough by itself, so I bred to get a Mareanie with Merciless. Absolutely worth the time. 9:01 Two other amazing features Unova added: A passive Item Finder, activate it and it will "slumber" on the bottom screen until it detects an item, great. And a feature Gen "5.2" added specifically: The automatic prompt that informs you that your Repel just ran out immediately asks you whether you want to use another one. (Provided you have another one.) 11:09 At least Galar had Regional Variants of non-Kanto Pokémon at all and Legends Arceus seems to go further into that direction as well. Albeit its a little unsettling to know that all these hisuian forms are simply extinct in modern Sinnoh...

For third gen 1) Double battles tied with 2) Abilities. 3) Natures (are important but I'd defiantly say Double battles are even more important.) fifth gen hand down #1 is unbreaking TM's!

Am I the only one that felt free access PC kinda breaks the main story? Before you had a roster of Pokemon you need to carry from Town A to Town B and the challenge is you need to survive between them. Save function is more like a quick save hence why that system works for Pokemon and not for some other RPGs. Now you can technically not black out by keeping capturing Pokemon in the routes and constantly making your party full.
@mhz33172 жыл бұрын
@@zjzr08 na. Going to the PC was more tedious than anything else. There's nothing stopping you as a player from not using it remotely. It's a nice quality of life upgrade that's entirely optional to use.
@zjzr082 жыл бұрын
@@mhz3317 I'm just baffled on things that seem to just be annoyance to RPGs seen as tedium (like grinding, which I think is fine in Pokemon as it doesn't need you to grind too much) like why play RPGs if trying to survive from one point to another is too much, hehe. And yes it is optional, but it's the same as Exp Candies, sure they're optional, but they're there so why not use them? I feel good game design had to make players avoid temptation that breaks the game, unless the difficulty setting allows that.
@toumabyakuya2 жыл бұрын
@@zjzr08 I honestly cannot understand where you are going with this. *"Before you had a roster of Pokemon you need to carry from Town A to Town B..."* And you could still double back the Town A if you wanted to heal and/or switch Pokemon. Heck, at around the middle point of every Pokemon game you get access to Fly (one of the very few HMs that is still good in-battle) that lets you do just that instantly. Wouldn't Fly be broken as well?. *"Save function is more like a quick save hence why that system works for Pokemon and not for some other RPGs."* How is it the same to a quick save when you can save anywhere and said save doesn't get deleted the second you load it (a calling card of quick saving)?. *"Now you can technically not black out by keeping capturing Pokemon in the routes and constantly making your party full."* But none of those Pokemon will be on-par with those you had prior because they lack IVs/EVs and have a terrible moveset. This also lasts as long as you have Pokeballs. *"like grinding, which I think is fine in Pokemon as it doesn't need you to grind too much"* Even a little bit is bad in my opinion, after all, grinding is boring. *"...like why play RPGs if trying to survive from one point to another is too much,..."* Oh, I don't know, maybe the characters, Pokemon, story, lore, sense of adventure, between many others? There are more reasons than one to play an RPG, nay, any video game. *"but they're there so why not use them?"* Maybe because they break the game? However, they still exist because of people like me that loathe grinding and that that has been their main problem when it comes to accessing the competitive scene. In other words, thy want to bridge both sides of the fanbase by making it easier for the casuals. *"I feel good game design had to make players avoid temptation that breaks the game,..."* Nope, it is not the developers job to control what the players do in their games.
@zjzr082 жыл бұрын
@@toumabyakuya How do you not get it? Sure you can technically get back to Town A if you're in danger of blacking out, but you have to do that journey from that point again. Fly can only access places you already went to, which is reasonable for that function as you already finished that Point A to B journey. Also I meant by quick save is like in emulators, where it takes a point in the game and saves it even if it isn't part of the game's save function (forgot the name of what it's called, so I used the term quick save).

For XY I also have to say : I think the roller blades are not only cool but necessary to 3D pokémon games. While 2D pokémon games can easily cheat to make you match a speed that feel comfortable, 3D games have to make your character slower, to match the animations. That's where the roller blades comes, which is a more maneuvrable version of the bicycle, that is directly tied to a button and so have the game fully designed around the fact that you can change between both options without using your menu. Pokémon just feel to slow for me now the roller blades are gone.

Those are well life quality changes. I also liked what they did with the experience points. It's worth alot more depending on the levels and combined with Audino and items like Lucky Egg and such to where u can double or triple, it can level up Pokemons way faster.
@houndofculann17932 жыл бұрын
@@jaretco6423 I actually found the xp thing very annoying back in Gen5 since it also gave you much less xp if you were overleveled, and I usually was. They dialed that down in gen6 to a manageable level but then broke whatever challenge the games had left with the new Exp. Share so I'm quite conflicted about the experience gain in general
@jaretco64232 жыл бұрын
Houndo. I didn't find XP thing in Gen. 5 that annoying. I thought it was an major upgrade so it makes XP more worth an while. It's better than how Gen. 2 or 4 handles it since they're very low with XP and u have to do some serious heavy grinding in the last halve before facing the Pokemon League. Even with the VS. Seeker.
@houndofculann17932 жыл бұрын
@@jaretco6423 I agree it was generally better for the usual playthrough, especially how it (and the easy access to lucky egg) made it much more viable to add or replace the members of your party later in the game. What I did find annoying, though was the fact that the overleveling penalty was very hard on top of some Pokemon only evolving at much higher levels than in previous generations (Braviary/Mandibuzz at 54, Hydreigon at 64, Volcarona at 59 as the worst examples) when the only repeatable Pokemon you could encounter were at levels 37-42 pre-League and 50-60 post-League, while not being of the sorts that actually give that much XP besides Audino.
@jaretco64232 жыл бұрын
Houndo. Ah. I see your point and I understand. But honestly, it didn't really bother me all that much. It is possible to evolved some Pokemons like Mandibuzz, Braviary or Bisharp before the League. I usually save on how many Rare Candies as possible, grind to level up an pre-evolution Pokemon couple of times and than it'll evolved before League. Only exception being Volcarona & Hydrageon. Now Volcarona doesn't bother me since it and it's pre-evolution aren't found till after the main plot driven is done. You'll get Larvesta at an daycare center in an Egg, which I never raised. And u can explore more of the Relic Castle to captured an lvl. 70 Volcarona at your leisure and it was worth it. I mean let's face it. If u get Volcarona around the main plot, than it'll be an easy cake walk considered how powerful Volcarona can be. Only one I didn't bother with is Hydrageon because it's at lvl. 64 to evolevd. Now I know it's an Psudeo-Legendary and many Psudeo-Legendary Pokemon kinda has it's ridiculous high level to degree to evolved. But I do think Hydrageon went an little bit too overboard. But like Volcarona, if it did appeared around the main story, it would break the game sometimes concerning how good it was and this was before Gen. 6 had Fairy type to butchered it down an bit. But not by much since it has alot coverage. Now Black 2 & White 2 does kinda fixed this that u can capture the fully evolved ones like Mandibuzz & Braviary in an desert route that only appeared in certain days and u can get an lvl. 35 Volcarona on the other cave side at Driftvel City's PWT to reach the Relic Castle ( Though it's movepool does start off pretty poorly before becoming better. Be warn. ). And Zwelious replace Deino at the Victory Road route so if u wonna capture it and not worry about an Pokemon with an Hustle ability, than go for it. I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't mind this kind of change of challenge since those Pokemon that can take pretty long to evolved or get through an certain area are really that much good Pokemons. And yeah. Gen. 6 and onward made them alot easier with the addition of Exp Share and whatnot. But I don't care and there always optional.

The remakes for diamond and pearl look like they make them more interesting than before making them less boring.
@zjzr082 жыл бұрын
@@Monica_bondevik I meant that they are fun to do, although IMO had to be done in moderation, just saying they aren't really needs and there are other ways to relieve stress, just like how your logic about contest not having a point when it is a point for others.

"You can just breed your own starters and auction them off on your own black market." You joke, but I did this. I would breed a load of Eggs, sort them and charge prices based on rarity: 5¢ for a common Pokémon, 10¢ for a intermediate rarity, and 25¢ for a rare one. Primary school was a trip for early Pokemon fans.

For me the best feature ever added was Pokémon, being able to fuss, love and play with my Pokémon after a hard-won battle was just the best! Then they went and ruined it by turning it into a weird camp-curry-cookout in Sword and Shield 😭😭😭 Thanks for the new vid JPRPokéTrainer 💙🐱💙

I still want a Pkmn game with 8 different selections per route: seasons & day/night variations. do you want a Fairy-only route? try Summer night. do you want to catch a wild Froslass? try hiking in the mountains during the winter nights. do you want a Flabebe? try spring day. do you want to catch a Gourgeist? maybe autumn day.
@toumabyakuya2 жыл бұрын
Maybe that is simply too much? I mean, that would turn any region with 100+ routes into one with 800+ thanks to all the variations. A game like that would easily take 5 years to make, minimum, and that is not an amount of time Pokemon can wait for a new entry in their main games.
@jgr74872 жыл бұрын
@@toumabyakuya from where did you take 100+ routes? Pkmn games barely have 30 routes. did ypu play BW/B2W2? there you'd have the same 5 to 10 pkmn per route, but their % would change according to the season, so, for instance, Ice types would be either at 0% or 1% outside winter, while Flying types would be at 1% during winter. did you play HGSS? there you'd find Hoothoots in pretty much every route during night time & Pidgeys during daytime, while Rattata % would fluctuate depending if it was a Sentrer route or not. the examples I gave were special pkmn in special locations.
@toumabyakuya2 жыл бұрын
@@jgr7487 Yeah, I got confused with the numbers. However, the problem still stands and the problem is not the Wild Pokemon themselves, but designing how each route would look under each and every season is the problem and what would make the development of the game take too much time. However, programming all of those special events so Pokemon can vary this wildly might be yet another problem because this could make the games too heavy and it might also increase the quantity of time it takes to develop all this.
@jgr74872 жыл бұрын
@@toumabyakuya Gen 2 already had different spreads for day & night time. some seasonal places in Unova work like they need an inexistant HM to get there, like clibing a hill or crossing a ditch. the hill could have needed Rock Climb, but it doesn't as you can climb in winter; the ditch could have had water to be surfed uppon, but it doesn't, so you cross it walking on leaves.
@toumabyakuya2 жыл бұрын
@@jgr7487 Thing is that all that changed in gen 2 was the color, nothing more. And in gen 5 they were still using sprites over 3D models, so it wouldn't be as complex.

A great addition in Gen 2 that was broken on release was special Pokeballs. Having Pokeballs that give better catch rates when under certain parameters helped with filling the dex faster. Unfortunately for Gen 2 and HGSS, Kurt's balls suck. The only good ones nowadays are the Dusk, Net, and Repeat Balls.

You could have added gen 1. With pokemon yellow being gen 1 it added a following pikachu. I feel like this could have worked for something new it added which became a massive thing. Following pokemon. OR even could give it that it was the only one to follow the anime much closer. Thats a big 1

Id like to see a pokemon that changes form with its environment. Go to the mountains, sea, forest, beach and it will change forms. You would be able to lock that pokemon into that form by getting it to hold its signature item. It would evolve once it reaches a certain level, it's item would be consumed and the evolution would be locked into the type that goes along with the form.
