@guyfromnj the preseason I do top first is because the lids are the weak point. So I can get a solid weld and pressure from all side in the first press. Before I used to go just sides and the caps would pop off and the ends of my billet would not weld properly. Now I don't have that issue.

If you want to do stabilized wood you need a good vacuum chamber with vac pump and the best thing is to get in touch with a few micarta mfc comp to get the ins and outs with different types of epoxy. I used cactus juice brand to actually be the best performer for stabilized wood. You have a cost to this and it has to do with time. It really takes a lot of time. You can get stabilized wood from some suppliers but you have to take into account that they usually have large vats that they do bulk stabilized wood and it's not going to be that superb choice that you may want.
@JPsBladeworks4 ай бұрын
how long does it usually take to stabilize woods? I have some padauk that i want to stabilize. I need to tool up but that shouldnt be an issue once i decide to take the leap into it.
@PaulGriffin-ox1gp4 ай бұрын
@@JPsBladeworks stabilized wood varies due to the fact it is a natural that has density and moisture and so many different things that can ruin it. Most of your high-end stabilized woods are done in small batches. But if you want to know how to mitigate some of this, I would suggest you contact the Cactus Juice company and get them to give you a better scale than probably any company can give you since they are the best wood stabilizer and have been around for a long time. I've actually helped build a couple of really nice rifles that had stabilized wood that you couldn't get from any source. I don't know how the good Dr. Had come up with the stocks but he made sure that these $7500 guns, this was in 1997-98 that we built the three rifles was after the stocks and all the other stuff was done, come in at around $25-35,000 and that was with the lower grade of the three. But it just gives you a idea that you can find a real treasure in your backyard. He had a tree cut off of his property here in North Georgia that was a native tree. I think it was actually black cherry burl that was classed as a AAAA which is the ultra best and rarest of finds. I had seen the stump and it was 35-39 inches in width. He had a set of three knives forged by some big name back in the day. That's three knives for each rifle. He had his, son in law, and grandson all done. It took us about 15 months to build those rifles and build the displays and carry cases. A person that does blacksmithing needs to get their hands into everything that they can learn and use. I like to go out and look for those burls and I like to do hand worked wood work like hewing and using a adze as well as build true classic log cabins that can surprise a few with no nail pining of the timbers.
