I enjoy the information you're giving. I'm still learning how to even get started forging, so all the information helps a ton. It looks like I need more tools and an actual anvil. Beautiful blade BTW love the design and the handle
@JPsBladeworksАй бұрын
All you need is a heat source, a hammer, and something to hammer on. You could get away with a chunk of steel as long as you can secure it to something to keep it from moving around. The heavier the better. Many other countries take a solid round and put it in cement and forge on that. People are recourceful.
@Viktory2k1Күн бұрын
I am teaching myself as you are and looking for tools for this craft, I've been a mechanic by trade for 33 years. So far, I totally suck at this trade because I don't have a furnace or a steam hammer or whatever those things are.
@USMCShoresКүн бұрын
@JPsBladeworks Ok cool thank you!! I have a chunk of I beam with 2x4s strapped to it I just need a way of securing it. I have slowly gotten my hammer collecting together. I just need plyers I bought my forge two burner propane box. So I'm excited to get started. I've collected a ton of random steel too. Couple broken files, coil springs from vehicles I've worked on, a chain from my trucks transfer case too to try. And many more steel items.
@USMCShoresКүн бұрын
@Viktory2k1 Not gonna lie. My fear of not being good at it is what has kept me from doing it all together. I've been a mechanic for as long as I can remember (19 years old in the Marines 35 now). I've collected steel from all my jobs from mechanic to mining to now wind energy technician. I just need to start. I can't afford a power hammer or anything fancy for heating. I bought a cheap two burner forge off eBay and an "anvil" off Etsy it's an I beam with 2x4s strapped to it. I live in an apartment with no garage so I have to go to a parents' house to do anything. But I've set myself a goal this year at least one blade by the end of the year.
@Viktory2k13 сағат бұрын
@@USMCShores Oh wow, I am also a mechanic but became disabled years backand still trying to get on SSDI but yeah, I worked primarily on trash hauling equipment for nearly 35 years but havent worked at all for a while now but side jobs here and there, can't handle much super heavy work. Yeah, I can't imaggine the price of that equipment like the oven, what do they use for fuel? sometimes I see wood laying around in some videos and some have propane or some kind of gas. Just looks like a lot to make knives as a hobby but its so intriguing that I want to start doing it. Make the box, put a bunch of small crap steel stuff like nuts, old stripped bolts, washers, stuff like that. Weld the lid on once packed and then go to town forging it down folding it a bunch of times in to a beautiful 10" santoku style knife with the sharp angle towards the tip. Oh man, sign me up!

Cool cleaver. First video I’ve watched but I’ll watch more. It always amazes me watching a person with so much talent yet so humble. Quick question. What’s the reasoning behind putting the tang in the wooden dowel then putting the wooden dowel in the other wood pieces as opposed to just putting the tang directly in the wood pieces? Sorry if you discussed why and I missed it, just curious.
@JPsBladeworksАй бұрын
Its supposed to be easier. You just drill a half inch hole and use a half in dowel with a slit to hold it in place vs having to make a small hole to fit the tang exactly but you still need to fit a bolster piece to the tang. Normally i just make a hole slightly bigger than the tang and then i do my bolster piece more exact. Its easier for me but other like the method used. I was just trying it.
