The ball bearings have chrome in them so they are harder to forge weld together in open air. For the tip, another method is just pinching it completely in the press so it forms a tip and your layers converge, that way you don’t need to forge weld. It’s a bit different look but I think it will work here. Good luck!

It thought about the pinch method but i ended up just cutting it. They make nickel plates ball bearings as well i believe. That might be a better option for this type of build.

I just watched someone doing a similar project with nickel coated bearings and no powdered steel; can't remember who it was, but it worked really well. Keep at it!@@JPsBladeworks

Very cool video! How come you decided not to use steel powder in the canister??

I was hoping for a different look but it was a failure. If i try again ill use the tried and true steel powder for a nicer result.

May have had some residual chemicals left in the bearings from the cleaning. But more likely, the chrome bearings are simply harder to work with.

Your material was a bit thin when you forged in the tip, that's why you got the cold shut. It should be salvageable though. Just take an angle grinder with cutoff wheel up the cold shut to clean it out, and adjust your forge for a rich burn and try again with gentle blows from hand hammer and Flux the crap out of it (like dip the tip into a tin of flux)

I ended up cutting it but that is a good thought. Ill keep that in mind if i run into this problem again.
