Quite! Enough with the modern "accepting and inclusive" stance we are all told we should take nowadays! Old fashioned and a little bit painful though it might be, at least I am today unthinkingly comfortable in the use of cutlery. I'm guessing you were properly taught too otherwise this tragic failure of not even etiquette - BASIC life skills - wouldn't have caught your eye so noticeably. When I was growing up there was very much the "right way" and "oh for the love of the living Christ NO - NOT like THAT"😄 Perhaps while I momentarily have the attention of someone who seems to think along the same lines, I wonder if I could have your feedback on this? Going to the doctor these days, seems to involve a terrifying merry-go-round of decisions apparently I have to make in response to "treatment options" and "different strategies". I don't know if you have encountered this but again, growing up as a child in the 70s and 80s, if you had anything wrong with you, you went to the GP and onward to a specialist if necessary which it wasn't, usually. Instead, I remember the doctor asking questions about symptoms, arranging a blood and urine test, prodding and poking around a bit, taking BP and temperature readings and more often than not, scribbling something in what might have easily passed for Old Church Slavonic onto a prescription pad, the items duly picked up from the chemist by my mother and whichever tinctures, unguents and extracts administered over the proceeding week on the dot and no arguments😆 I just have the overwhelming urge to reply something like "why are you asking me? I've presumed that you are the one here with the years of arduous medical training, several advanced degrees and professional experience behind you, I was rather therefore hoping you would be the one to tell me!" But I haven't yet done it because in truth I know that even doctors are under the cosh of little managers and a forest of regulations that didn't exist when they were trainees. And one suspects they hate it as much as I do...😉

Joel, you are sweetness personified and bless you for making yet another attempt on the humble baked bean. I think that effort earns you a B (you screwed up the buttering of the toast) so already your previous atrocities are forgotten. Everybody has their own style as the other comments here attest. That is funny because to us the British way of eating always holding the knife and fork looks rude. I was always taught to only hold your knife as long as it is needed to cut, put it down and eat with your right hand and to keep your left hand firmly on your lap. If we ate near my grandmother as children, for the little ones she would sit next to them and keep their left hand in their lap with her hand (obviously she had already finished eating). I find it VERY shocking to see people eat with their cutlery always in both their hands. No. Just…no.

I think with the butter it's partially the ingredients. I moved from the UK to the US almost a decade ago, American butter seems exceptionally rock hard, it didn't take long for me to switch to an imported Irish butter for a consistency I'm more used to. From my experience taking the butter out of the fridge earlier, the imported butter will become softer before the American butter does too. As for the knife/fork usage it always amuses me that every American I know here will mostly cut with the knife, put it down and swap the fork over to the other hand to eat.

Beans on toast is my go-to comfort food, always with grated cheddar on top. When I had tin of beans in the USA it came as a surprise to find the they were in some kind of brown bbq style sauce. Watching this video, I never realised 'making' beans on toast was such a complex and long-winded process. As everyone is commenting on it, the cutlery use also seems complex and long-winded; very awkward.
@richardhunter73633 жыл бұрын
You can live off beans on toast when you are away at Uni - I know, I did. lol. Add a soft poached egg on top for an extra protein hit. Baked beans can be part of breakfast when served in a full English (bacon - real bacon not what you call bacon in the US, sausage, fried eggs, mushrooms, fried bread), on toast would normally be a lunch.

My dad used to make this for me when I was a kid. I don't know why but I always eat the beans off the toast first and then eat the soggy toast last, which is actually my favourite part 😂 I still have it every now and then.

Here's how I make beans on toast: Put the beans in a saucepan, add a squirt of brown sauce and a knob of butter. Heat them until the beans start turning into mush (overcook them), then pour them over buttered hot toast. (add a few flakes of chili to the beans if you like a bit of warmth) Cheesy Beanos: Same as above but pour the beans over cheese on toast,

I believe the beans are already cooked when they're sold in the shops, the purpose of heating them is just to make them warm rather than to cook them, you only really need to heat the beans until the sauce starts to boil, so it doesn't matter the temperature or time you do it for. It's a dish you'd struggle to mess up once you know

I always thought baked beans on toast was more universal. A fact I have just seen. The UK eats more cans of baked beans than the rest of the world combined. 1.5 million cans of Heinz Beanz are sold every day in the UK. That's just one brand.
@wackyjacky1 Жыл бұрын
Not everyone does it but you could add a touch of butter to the beans while they heat up or a dash of milk that can make a touch more juice while cooking them. I add the dash of milk to mine.. I'm glad you enjoyed them.

I feel a little guilty for giggling at this video 🤭 I often forget that the whole world doesn't eat what we do here in the UK. Great effort, my kids love beans on toast they put 1 slice of toast buttered then add half the can of bean then put another slice of toast on top as if making a sandwich. Add the rest of the beans with white cheddar cheese and mix in brown sauce ( like ketchup) We also have tinned spaghetti on toast, it’s the same method with out the cheese though. It’s a quick filling snack and it’s also comfort food than if all else fails you can have something on toast and it’ll never let you down. Oh my word, Brits teaching an American how to cook beans, I thought baked beans were the staple diet of cowboys in the Wild West, they seemed to have mastered it in the farting scene of the movie Blazing Saddles! Lol. But seriously, you did well Joel! You can have beans on toast for any meal really, there is no set way for you to have them either, if you like toast well done or not so well done, have it that way. If you want your butter soft, take it out of the refrigerator 20-25 mins before you need to spread it, it needs to be at room temperature to make it easily spreadable! Make sure that you don’t have the stove so hot that it boils the beans, heat them up steadily! However, I’m glad you enjoyed them, you have them they way you like them, well done and I can’t wait to see more of you trying our foods!
