It's been two years so I figured I would check in. I did follow through and I can say without a doubt that this video definitely improved my performance at the track. I rarely, if ever, flame out in a race and the car just works. The brakes are never trying to overstep the engine or vice versa. The engine always reliably comes back to idle and the brakes don't stall it. Thank you for this video!!

Thanks for taking the time to share the knowledge. Nitro rc cars are almost rare in 2023. I walk into local hobby shops with my vintage traxxas or even my ofna racing buggy and they look at me like Im crazy. They dont even have any nitro for sale. They try to push electric on me. They have little to NO knowledge of nitro. Wont even look up parts for me half the time. Whats funny is as soon as I fire one up. Everyone in the store comes running. They always want to see them run. Was tuning my traxxas earlier this week I had an entire construction crew of guys hooting and hollering. I let them drive it around a bit and they looked like kids at xmas.

Your detailed explanation is something I get and understand, I now have a better understanding and will look at trying out a nitro buggy... again Thank you!!

As I delve into the hobby, I'm keen on mastering what I consider the most crucial aspect of nitro cars: the engine. My research has led me to understand that a well-tuned engine is essential not only for a successful day at the track but also for ensuring the engine's longevity. Prior to discovering your video, I watched several others. Yours, however, stands out as the best, and I strongly recommend it to everyone, especially before they start their engine for the first time. I have ordered two nitro cars-a buggy and a truggy-and while waiting for their arrival, I was initially discouraged by the scarce information available on engine tuning. That's no longer the case. Your video has simplified the concept, making it accessible to everyone. Thank you very much.

For measuring the idle gap: The shank end (the part that goes in the drill chuck) of a precision drill bit or what are called 'pin gauges' would be an easier tool to use. They are round and fit in that space more easily. The pin gauges would most likely be more expensive, and are precision measuring tools machinists use for gauging similar situations. The precision drill bits come in small sets and cane be found at many places dealing with hobbies and crafts. Just measure the shank end of the bit with you calipers ( most of the time the shank is slightly smaller than the labeled drill bit size )

I have been in this hobby since 1998. I have raced in the Kyosho World Championship, yet this video aded more to my experience significantly. I have watched this video probably about 5 times start to finish, that is how interesting, well edited, fun and knowledgable it is. I wanted to experiment, so i took one of my onroad 1/8 vehicles that i have had for a while and having fun with it for a while. I had tuned the vehicle prior using my experience and without measuring the idle gap until i got it tuned. I purchased the Gap feelers and trimmed them, reset my HSN and LSN and IDLE screw to factory settings (or as described in the manual) i highlighted the 1.0MM, 0.7MM and 0.5MM on my carb with a marker. Low and behold, i had my vehicle perfectly tuned in no time and at 0.5MM carb idle gap. No double idle, perfect low idling, fast response and above all and most of all no guessing. Super amazing video. Thank you!

This is outstanding. Nitro clicked for me the moment I learned to set the idle gap (0.7mm for the Novarossi Bonito I ran at the time) and essentially leave it there, then adjust idle speed with the low speed needle. It’s like simplifying a math equation from 2nd order to 1st by elimination of a variable. It’s always baffled me that I never saw a video instructing this method, and only like 1 or 2 forum posts out there (in a sea of thousands) that describe this method. 99% of people want to change idle speed with the throttle stop screw as if this is a normal carb, like on a dirt bike or lawnmower.

I fkn love this video. I'm watching it for the 6th or 7th time now just because I enjoy the concise explanation of what everything is, what everything does and especially the audio examples at the track listening for what ails the motor and what the remedy for said ailment is...and I don't even own a nitro vehicle. But at this point I feel sufficiently confident that I could get a motor tuned without making an utter hash of the procedure, never having tuned a nitro engine before. I don't want to sound overconfident and I'm well aware of such phenomena as the Dunning-Kruger effect. I'm not saying there's nothing to it, but it doesn't appear to be rocket surgery either. Thanks again for the top notch content J. No one explains these things better than you do. Cheers and o7 from Germany, Diem

Also one of the reasons we run nitro in such small cc engines is because gas's perfect combustion point is exponentially more sensitive the smaller the volume, it is super hard almost impossible to tune a 1-2cc gas engine, whereas nitro is much less punishing (for just making the engine run not talking about pro performance) And goodness this video is freaking gold, what a master class

Only thing I would have added is that anytime you touch that HSN more than very small minute adjustments, you need to retune that LSN as the HSN affects the entire fuel flow and thus tune of all 3 needles. 👍 Thanks for taking the time to put this together for those who don’t know how to properly tune an engine! I just purchased my 1st nitro rc car, till now all I have ran is electric. I won't lie, as mechanically inclined as I am, I got butterflies in my belly as I hit the purchase button lol. I purchased a Losi 8ight Buggy as it seems to be rated as one of top 10 by many different reviewers, it's all I was able to really go by. But this video was by far the best I could find explaining how to tune these guys. While I know the basics how engines & carbs work, I wasn't sure how the needles (valves) adjustments really came into play along with the response & engine sounds to know what was happening. This video has surely given me the confidence I needed to tackle this buggy which I'm hoping that it will take my rc car experience to a whole new level. I'm still a bit nervous about breaking in the engine properly, but at least now I have some reference points that can help me troubleshoot issues that may arise.
