To defend Andy Weir: He was a software developer (engineer), not having any real background in physics or space engineering. He was well aware that storm that can move a rocket can never happen on Mars. Per many of his interviews, he contemplated use different story causing Mark being stranded, such as rocket malfunction during a test. Then he decided for a storm because the story of Martian is fight between a man and the nature and Andy wanted nature to give the first punch. The iron man flight idea was mentioned by Mark in the book, but never realized, as it could never work. If you enjoyed the movie, your are going to love the book (as it always is).

The problem that no one talks about when talking about terraforming is you have to have a magnetic field around the planet for it to work. the only way to do that would be to create similar conditions from inside the planet to come close to our planets, otherwise the ozone your trying to create would eventually escape, and u would have no protections from radiation. you would need to jump start the core of the planet, hoping it is made of material that can create a magnetic field

no, he talked about using nukes to melt the ice caps at the poles of mars. nukes can't jump start the core of a planet, well maybe, but it would take more nukes than we could ever produce and chances are it would only destroy the planet or make it even more hostile to human life or life in general. you would have to heat an entire planets core, hoping that it is iron or of a mineral capable of creating a magnetic field, once you heated the core, you would need the core to rotate. if you nuked the surface, it would be like cooking it like a hot pocket, hot as fuck on the surface with an ice cold center. plus that would mean a lot of that energy from the nukes would disperse out into space instead of towards the core like is needed.

Not exactly. The polar caps of Mars are made (mostly) of dry ice, so when you melt/vaporize them you get CO2, not breathable air, as depicted in the movie. The 'atmosphere generator' in the movie was some kind of ancient alien technology that could do that sort of thing. (Note: I've only seen the original, not the remake, so maybe they did something different in the new version.) EDIT: BTW, there are other ways to do it. For example, one idea is to find a hardy species of lichen that grows in extremely cold, dry conditions like mountaintops. Then you'd inoculate Mars with these spores, and as the lichens grow, their dark color would lower the albedo of Mars, causing it to absorb more heat from the sun. As the temperature gradually rises, the polar caps will melt naturally. (And as the CO2 concentration rises, you get more greenhouse effect, so it becomes a self-reinforcing cycle of warming and melting.) The down-side however is that this "natural" process would take hundreds of years.

there was actually a movie from ...the 70s???? where they nuked mars to heat it up and a few astronauts were trapped there running out of air. I have NOOOOO idea what the name of it is. i saw it once when i was like 7 or 8 in the 80's . i believe the idea is you nuke the ice caps, increase the atmospheric co2, that causes a green house effect which raises its temperature and melts all the water under the surface. Also having a thicker atmosphere on mars would help with radiation, and landing space vehicals. And yes mars isnt big enough to retain its atmosphere, but it would last like a 1000 years or so, so for any practical purpose it wouldnt matter.

Mars doesn't have a strong magnetic field so any amount of atmosphere you would try to create by terraforming would end up being quickly blown away by the solar winds. The lower gravity would hold some atmosphere but I think it's pretty far fetched that it will ever be habitable without carrying around your own atmosphere in a vehicle or suit.

I think it’s cool that Elon is passionate about it because it is probably laying some stepping stones of thought for people alive way past all of us. He’s a visionary and visionaries have to be insanely optimistic. I dont really care about colonizing mars but everyone has different passions and a purpose. I like it!

You could never permanently teraform Mars. It would need constant maintenance because ultimately it's too small to hold onto an atmosphere. Earth is almost too small, but we lucked out with a fairly strong magnetosphere, a moon and life gave us the ozone layer.
