The Space Force needs to do a number of things, in this order: 1. Monitor all global satellite traffic 2. Establish a semi permanent settlement on the moon. 3. Establish foreign body tracking systems on the moon (easier to track and detect extraterrestrial objects from an environment without an atmosphere) 4. Create a deep space launch facility on the moon (much more cost effective and safer to launch from moon than Earth) 5. Head an international Earth Defense Coalition, to take over monitoring of orbital AND extraterrestrial objects. 6. Head up Mars Exploration and Colonization program, using the moon as the launch and recovery location. 7. Create a semi permanent settlement on Mars, complete with manufacturing and launch facility. 8. Head an international coalition with the goal of terraforming and seeding Mars. 9. What Neil is thinking of is Air Force Space Command, and they're already really good at space stuff. That's why the new US Space Command is going to be a USAF asset, run by an USAF general - at least at first. 3. If war breaks out with us and Russia or China, the first thing to be destroyed will be the GPS satellites to stop us from sending smart bombs and missiles, navigation of forces, etc. Don't get me wrong, I like Neil. His words aren't always 100% accurate, though.

He got some of the details wrong when it comes to putting offensive weapons in space, the reason you would put weapons in space is because it would drastically decrease the response window your opponent has. The idea that I cant drop something from a satellite orbiting around latitude 20 and hit something at latitude 80 is ridiculous, it's certainly not trivial but if I can put a satellite in orbit there's a very good chance I can work out the mechanics required to move a weapon from one point to another. With that, its possible to decrease the response window to 5-10 minutes, or less depending on the trajectory of the originating satellite or countermeasures placed on the weapon, and the trouble with shortening that window is that it forces the other side to shorten their response time to just a few minutes. Having any system run in that short of a time period requires that they drop controls that might prevent accidental launches or other mistakes, and makes it more likely that we have a something break and all of a sudden WW3 has started. THAT'S why you don't put strategic weapons in space, not because "it's hard" but because it makes everyone inherently LESS safe.

16:15 He's describing deflagration vs detonation (which he mentions and explians later. I'm just adding to it); A detonation is an "explosion" who's shock wave is the same speed or greater than the speed of the flame front (speed of the flame front is how quick the fuel is igniting. Black powder for instance has a really slow burn rate and thus a slow flame front, though the shock wave is still faster than the flame front and so is why it's used). A deflagation though, is the opposed. The fuel doesn't burn fast enough to have a shock wave, or at least not one faster than the flame front. So basically what you get is the inside of an oven.

It has to begin somewhere... building new technology like Musk, to be able to travel into space whenever we want with any military aircraft. We don't have to explore space yet but just to have reusable crafts to go to space and back on a normal day of flying would be a huge leap to the future.

We have been trying to fix those issues to no resolve, and in the meantime millions of our brightest minds on engineering are going to wast. If we allow them to work on problems they can fix they might inevitably fix some of the current issues with society. What the point of a better education system if we don't utilize the people with a higher education? How about instead of locking people in a cage for petty crime we give them a job on Mars doing remedial tasks, i think that would be far better rehabilitation that would give inmates a actual appreciation for being a free person on earth. And an entire new industry would need a entire society of worker to support it thus fixing wage issues, even if you just the guy that makes sandwiches for the space workers you'll at lest have a job.

Wayne Paul ...granted, there are some resources on asteroids. Mostly Iron, some nickel, and other metals. But you aren’t going to find natural gas or oil on any asteroid that is readily accessible to humans. This is because gas and oil are the byproducts of carbon based biological entities (plant life to be specific). So that leaves metals. Now it becomes an issue of cost. How much does it cost to mine on an asteroid, vs how much money will be made selling those metals. If you look at the current costs of space travel, I think you will find the return on investment is non-existent. It’s just too expensive. So a good thought, but it’s just not practical.
