When I was in junior high and high school I did golden gloves. I worked out at a gym called "Bell recreation center" in Kansas City, Kansas this would have been when Tommy had about 3-4 pro fights under his belt. Tommy was the only pro fighter that worked out there, and him being from Jay, Oklahoma where my grandfather grew up we kind of hit it off, I was like 14-15 y.o. he helped me develop my left hook (I'm a southpaw) he was just a regular guy, that happened to be able to knock a guy's head clean off their body. Here is a bit of trivia you might not know. At 13 Tommy was competing, at the adult level, in tough man competitions and beating grown ass men. Tommy Morrison was the second biggest waste of raw talent and potential in heavyweight boxing. He had top tier fundamental skills, great flexibility, fluidity, balance, timing and coordination. he had other worldly knockout power in both hands, and his left hook was probably the greatest of all time. He knew how to throw that damn left hook, both long range and short range. A superb offensive fighters(one of the greatest in terms of offensive capability). What he did not have were the three D's- discipline, direction and dedication to his craft. Tommy loved to party, and he partied all the time. He never focused after a point, on boxing. He partied literally all day, all year, and it not only stunted and eventually stopped his career, but it also killed him. Its just such a sad story. He could have been so great!
@stealth75162 жыл бұрын
@Iceman 23 Riddick Bowe. He could have been the greastest of all time. He had everything- size, reach, height, strength, cardio, chin, the ability to box from the outside and was such a great inside fighter for a man of his size. But he was focussed only for the Holyfield fight, he just wasted his time and overate apart from that and did not focus. Its sad really, he really had all the tools and the ability to be an all time great(he kinda still is but you get my point). The Bowe who fought Holyfield in the first fight could have beaten any heavyweight to ever live imho.

I looked it up. Mercer was actually 48. Sylvia was 33 then. I just don't like hearing multiple times that Sylvia was "past his prime" like it's an excuse for him. I'm not "offended". I just disagree with the point. I know fighters peak and prime at different ages, but Mercer was 15 years older, and I'd argue 48 vs 33 isn't the same as say 36 vs 21.
@shangtsung13625 жыл бұрын
@@patch8376 Yeah, Joe is reflexively defending MMA.
@patch83765 жыл бұрын
@Dee Gee How could everything be accurate when he didn't even get Mercer's age right? Gee, Dee, that was easy enough to disprove. Onto further facts, can you link me to a source that says 315? I can link you to one that says 310.6. Not a big difference, but a difference. Again, a little inaccurate. I won't dispute Sylvia being chinny by that point, and certainly being that way can accelerate a fighter's decline beyond the expected fade from slowed reflexes, etc. I know it isn't an exact science. But let's get back to facts. Sylvia was champion of the UFC until March 2007. Yes, he'd lost three of four going into the Mercer fight, but the losses were to Couture, Big Nog, and Fedor. At that time most fighters on the planet would have been doing good to go anything other than 0-3 to those three. Randy dirty boxed Gonzaga after that before getting Brock'd, so don't excuse Captain America. He'd only fought one fight in a promotion outside the UFC, and had fought in the UFC as recently as 2008. He might have been run out of the major promotion, but he fought Fedor who was considered the top heavy in the world by many even then. Mercer hadn't fought for a world title since a 2002 loss to Wlad Klitschko seven years earlier. Unless you're going to drum up Mercer as having had some kickboxing K1 MMA success he totally wasn't by the time of the Sylvia fight, he was near a whole decade past relevance, and that's putting it generously, not someone who'd held the world championship just the year before last at the time of the fight, like Sylvia. In fact, I just double checked (something you should do more of before you debate me) and the last time Mercer won a world title bout was in 1991, and WBO was even more fringe then, a notch below the big 3 ABC belts. 18 years before 2009. Tim Sylvia defended the UFC belt in November 2006. Jeff Monson wasn't any worse than the cans and unproven prospects Mercer ran up a 6-2 boxing record against after the 2002 demolition at the hands of Klitschko. I'm not denying Sylvia was well past his best at the time of the Mercer fight. I never have. But to only talk about one guy being "washed up" and not the other? Again, the other guy hadn't won a world title fight in 18 years, and hadn't fought for one in seven. It's great Mercer likes MMA. So do I. But part of the reason he left boxing in the first place, regardless of what he says, is that the money fights had dried up for him since they weren't fights he could win. Sylvia was dumb to trade with Mercer and agree to a fight that minimized his chance of success. Even Kimbo knew better to bull rush Mercer and get Merciless off his feet first. Sure, Sylvia went on the regional circuit AFTER the Mercer loss, but what did Mercer do after that? Nothing.
