@hiyadroogs4 жыл бұрын
@@BazIrvine Nothing to do with age, but motivation & self discipline. Tyson's only opponent in life, & especially in boxing, has only ever been himself. He was lost as a child, & lost for most of his adulthood. When Cus was alive, Mike briefly felt that he was worth something, & felt the approval from Cus that was worth fighting & winning for. The Jesuits have had a saying for hundreds of years. 'Show me a boy of 7, & I will show you the man.' Self worth is instilled early in life, & people have spent entire lifetimes trying to rise from the ashes of their childhood years.
@hiyadroogs4 жыл бұрын
@Cryer24597 Coulda, woulda, shoulda. We can all speculate about what COULD have happened, - but none of us, not even the boxing professionals, know what WOULD have happened. You could just as easily speculate, - who did Ali ever meet who was remotely the equal of a prime 19 - 21 year old Tyson? Frazier came closest in size, work rate & style, & Frazier believed rightly or wrongly that he won all 3 fights, & floored Ali in one. & Frazier was completely blind in one eye in all 3 fights. In style, speed, knockout punch in both hands, Tyson could have won easily. But that doesn't mean that he WOULD have won, because Ali had far more heart, & didn't become frustrated & disheartened when he couldn't knock his opponent out. Same with Lewis & Holyfield. Tyson absolutely had the power, speed, & defense to have destroyed both in his prime skill years. That still doesn't mean that he WOULD have. Lewis, Holyfield & Ali, all had a measured, calm skilled style that gets better with age & wisdom. Tyson, on the other hand, because he was only 5'11" at best & 15 & a half stone, had to rely on Frazier's style of speed, defense, body movement, & multi punch complex combinations, with a very aggressive high work rate. This only suits youth & hyper fitness, along with highly disciplined training. Lose any one of those aspects, & Tyson becomes vulnerable to 6'5"" big hitters & shrewd defenders. As we saw in the Douglas fight, looking for single shots instead of combinations, & a very low work rate, simply didn't work for an undisciplined, complacent, lazy Tyson, & he paid the price against a man he should have beaten inside the first round. But Douglas, as Mike acknowledged, trained specifically & fought the best fight of his entire career. For Douglas, they met at precisely the right time in their careers. Douglas in the ascendant of his career, Tyson spiralling downwards out of control. & that is my point here. Early on, Lewis lost against Tyson when they were both young, but Tyson lost to Lewis & Holyfield later in his career, when he had lost skill, speed, & combinations, & they had gained in experience & defense. Everyone has a moment in time when they are the best they are ever going to be. Tyson's came early, Lewis, & Holyfield's came late career.
@hiyadroogs4 жыл бұрын
@Cryer24597 If you watch back all Tyson's victories, you notice that not one of his knockout victories was a straight arms length punch. Every single one was either a right or left hook, or an upper cut. He was the little guy against every single one of his opponents, which meant that they all had a considerable reach advantage over him. This means that straight punching at distance made him extremely vulnerable to long ranged big hitters! He HAD to get inside & up close where his opponents reach held no advantage. That requires a very elusive quick moving defense, an extremely forward aggressive high work rate, & multiple punch combinations to work the body to bring the hands down to leave the head open. A low work rate & just waiting for an opening for a single punch to the head would only work for a very tall long reach big straight hitter like Wilder, or Lewis. For a little guy like Tyson or Frazier, it would be catastrophic. & it was, as we saw before the Douglas fight even happened. Tyson was becoming lazy & complacent 3 fights before the Douglas farce.

Don’t try to say mike Tyson at 37 years old(when he fought Lewis) was in his prime. He was old, soft and only fighting for money. Prime mike Tyson was 86-95, but ultimately his drug abuse, alcohol, hookers etc took over his boxing and he dipped, but a more narrow and disciplined person like Lewis was able to stretch his prime until his late 30s.

I agree, but tyson at his absolute best was in 85-88 with his catskills team like kevin rooney and steve lott. Tyson post prison version of him in 95 was a different declined fighter.

He was in his prime in jail. His prime was ruined.

He was visibly slower by the time he lost to Lewis. Lewis was still an incredible champ, but I'm surprised to hear him claim he fought a prime Tyson when you compare that guy to the ferocity of the earlier years.

Just so interesting! It's my day off and I have things to do, but I couldn't pull myself away from listening to this! So much respect for this man! Not only a boxing champion but so intelligent. I wish he could reach all these kids that are just floating through life with no guidance. Every young man needs to be taught how to be a real man by the greats that came before them. I didn't have that. My dad was there, but he just never gave me any advice or guidance. I feel like I turned out well. My wife says I did.

There’s a lot of talk about whether Tyson was in his prime against Lewis. As he said, during the time they first met, Tyson came at him and he couldn’t hang. Eventually he learned to hit back. This is how Lennox was during his pro career, often weathering a storm early on, taking the sting out of his opponent and then boxing him to victory. Regarding the matchup, in his own words, he was a late learner and Mike had it all from the start, and therefore them meeting that late on means he probably would have had the edge 9 times out of 10. Lennox believes Mike was ready for a fight on that day, and who are we to disagree. Lewis was an exceptional fighting brain, and had to take longer to learn his style. Mike’s aggression coupled with the explosive power and speed of youth, crucial in implementing such a style would have seen him zap Lennox 9 times out of 10 (being generous to the latter) in the late 80s. The improbability of a classic matchup between them was even more so given all the other fighters around in those 10 - 15 years. Ultimately Lennox would have to have been older when he met a younger Mike. Incidentally, if you watch footage of Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Smokin Joe and Ali in their ‘primes’ then Tyson’s Aura slips a bit. Those were very very hard men, brave and every bit as dominant. I saw many flaws in Tyson’s style, even though he was my fave. His punching speed and power in both hands was a wonder to behold, and almost never got to finish my pizza before he’d won a fight. And I could eat back then!
