As a retired master mechanic, I salute your many innovations and planning techniques. Your jig building is great, but some mechanical systems do not require that much thought. Of course if I was building it to keep, I would do probably the same. I built a 57 Chevy in the late 60's, I put all kinds of changes to it that I only see in custom cars today. Two weeks after I finished it, it was stolen, never to reappear. So my advise, LOCK IT UP good!!!

Love the work and I hate to be a critic but I was always taught to not wear gloves with the drill press, mill or lathe, because it can grab the leather or fabric and pull you in, rather then just take a few fingers off. I try and always clamp the work too. Sorry for being captain safety but that scared the crap out of me a little bit. Again, love the channel, you got mad skills!
@JohnReynolds66110 ай бұрын
You are correct. Not sure at what point I'm using gloves in this video (it's been a while since I've seen it). Sometimes I wear gloves while holding metal that could slice my fingers while using the drill press. I never wear gloves while using the lathe or mill. The lathe is the most dangerous.

I hope thst you fabricate a Dino type rear treatment so the back window is right behind the seats. I wonder if the metal and glass from an El Camino donor would not drop right in. This allows for netter engine cooling through your rear deck treatment. That would really set your car apart from all the others.

Seems like the unequal length control arms on the slanted pivot axis would cause a change in camber when the wheel deflects, and would cause binding with the trailing arm, which is trying to maintain a constant camber. Or is there enough give in the trailing arm pivot to avoid this? In any event, it seems like you'd want equal length control arms on a vertical pivot axis, in order to avoid camber excursions. If you get a change, I'd appreciate your commenting on this. Thanks!
@JohnReynolds6612 жыл бұрын
There's a rod end on the front of the swing arm that allows for plenty of mis-alignment - no binding. Keeping a consistent track width, IMO, is more important than having a consistent camber. In the video, I thought I explained why there is a camber change built in? This is very common in production cars.

A long time ago I read an article on mounting a Tornado drivetrain "behind" the rear seat (notch for pully clearance) of a second generation Corvair coupe. I've not seen any conversion since that has been able to do the same (retain rear seat). I had a concept of using a transverse V6, front wheel drivetrain (with suspension) into a 1966 Corvair convertible. That's why I'm curious about your conversion, despite losing the rear seat. ;-)
@lwoodt13 жыл бұрын
The article you are referring to is a man named Bill Porterfield. His company was Mid-Engineering. He was an engineer at Oldsmobile at the time in the early 70s. You can still find info about him on the internet.

Just a few questions... Will the vertical angle iron sections interfere with the headers? And regarding your suspension geometry, have you taken into consideration when the car is in a turn, your lower link mounts will be at different heights to the pavement. Would the tire contact patch be flat across or just touching on the edge of the tire? I'm not criticizing, just wondering if you had that figured out. BTW,. Great work!!
@JohnReynolds6613 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the rusty angle iron was just a joke and is not going anywhere near the car. The slight camber change in wheel travel happens to agree with cornering and body roll. It is however, not the best set-up for drag racing.

Putting the rear heim joints 90 degrees to each other is weird.so were is the roll center on the rear?are you thinking it’s 1/2 way between the top and bottom inner pivot points?if so that is going to be a lot higher than the front stock height. Will you have a jacking problem?with all the weight in the rear I think you may want to reconsider the inner pivot points.
@JohnReynolds6613 жыл бұрын
The rod end doesn't care if it's horizontal or vertical as long as it has enough mis-alignment. The rod end captures were made to be effective in the place they are attached. I didn't get into roll centers as there are too many variables that aren't known. I know where the tire in relation to the body is placed at ride height and made pivots accordingly. In my previous videos, you will see the that the front swingarm pivot has adjustability for anti-squat.
