Honestly seems like a fun alternative way to play the game. The early route trainers/gym leaders can keep their preevolutions and basic move sets, the later ones have better moves. And the only real fundamental change to the game is now the player can't cheese battles through raw stats and having a level advantage. Crystal was the first Pokemon game I played and I feel like I still would've given this a shot as a kid, gen 2 is pretty lacking in challenge.

I believe the Gen 2 AI (and possibly other gens as well) have a clause where, if there exists a move they can go for that will kill, they WILL use it. Hence why the Spearow is so consistent about always using Drill Peck until Noctowl is at a high enough level to survive one hit, after which it switches to a more random move selection.
@milsharkie11 ай бұрын
You're correct about the 'if a move will kill, use that move' thing, but it's deeper than that. In the case of Bird Trainers, specifically, they have an AI routine that discourages using any non-attacking moves, with no AI routines that encourage any of those moves, resulting in them always attacking every turn no matter what. There's a fantastic video by PiManRules in which he runs a tournament pitting all the Crystal trainers against each other, and he goes in depth on the various AI routines that the game uses in that video, if you're interested.

@jlyn60811 ай бұрын
To be fair, you did prove that your pre-Smeargle team COULD have eventually won against Lance, given that if Aerodactyl didn't wake up from sleep when it did, Lapras could have finished that up. So, because that came down to luck, anyway, Minimize was just, ironically enough, a more consistent strategy. And Smeargle wasn't even needed for Red! So the spirit of the rule remained, really, and it really doesn't detract at-all from how impressive this run was. Kinda wild to see that Gen 2 is so much more difficult for this challenge, but it also makes a bit of sense, if you think about it: Johto is famously the most underleveled region, really, so it's buffed the MOST by increased trainer levels. Whereas the Kanto postgame would be much less buffed-- as we see with the first try Red, where no real luck was needed. Very cool to see, and also very entertaining to compare with the Kanto run; in fact, comparing how each 'mon does in solo runs is half the fun of those, as well, so it's neat to see comparative elements in the other types of challenge runs, too. Either way, though, what a grueling challenge!
