On a business trip in Berlin some years ago I had a spare afternoon and wandered into this memorial church - its hard to explain the impact inside when surrounded by these immense walls of a blue light shot through with flecks of green, red and gold -breathtaking. An organist was playing/practicing and the music just filled the room. I sat for over an hour as did many others. Never forgotten that afternoon.

Some Stokowski nostalgy behind that transcription? Very well, and my favourite church in Berlin with all that stained glass and a particular acoustic. Thank you very well.

A beautiful piece for reflection. I heard melancholy to start, then an inner struggle find to strength, finally resolving to contentment. Inspiring as always. 🎹🎶

Superb. Who says you shouldn’t use a swell box with Bach anyway!

Rigid unmusical people who play by the book rather than by letting the music speak to them :-)
@dulcian32303 жыл бұрын
It depends on the rendition! If you were to play it by the standards of the 1703 Wender organ in Arnstadt where Bach was Thomas cantor, the "swell box" is non-existent, therefore playing with swellings is sacrilegious. Also, the playing with the stops - or should I say toying - is not original. On the few occasions where Bach made stop suggestions, he did not do them as direct or proliferated as the french romantic organ composers.

If Bach would have known these modern things, he defnetly would have used them!

Believe it or not I have never bee in the Gedaechtnis Kirche. I must do it next time I go. A beautiful recording and video from Tom of Jon's rendition of this beautiful stately piece. I enjoyed your chamber concert at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and am looking forward to Rochdale on 18th December for your Christmas concert.

Thank you for posting this performance. My wife and I are both church organists in the UK, and visited this church a few years, but weren’t able to play this organ at that time. Maybe we will on our next visit, if we can be invited!

My friend in high school that had few words, called Mozart "happy Bach", because Mozart didn't really like minor keys very much. I guess you could interpret it as usually being quite anxious, I heard Bach liked his laudanum. Lol. I really love the Liberty Bell March. Wurlitzer's can be a whole lot of fun. You can add a bit of comedy and expression, and lyrical, fantastic, touches. I was a horn and woodwind player, so I can identify with the humourous antics of music. They are for a specific purpose.

How is this church still allowed to stand, given its "problematic" name? Surely we Germans should be "reinterpreting" it to make it more palatable and "less problematic" to the British?! You know: following the examples set by museum trustees, BLM, and the National Trusts of England and Scotland.
