One of my favourite pieces to play and listen to by Bach. This rendition of the Fugue in particular, simply blows my mind. A masterclass in itself. Thank you so much for sharing!!

I have just rediscovered this Bach Fantasia & Fugue in c minor after forgetting about it for a long time. I used to be addicted to it, but with all the new music Jonathan serves up, it is sometimes easy to put aside old favorites. Glad to have found it again and realizing why I was so addicted to it. As OperaNut says "Jonathan playing Bach = Heaven". Yes!!! How right you are!

Surprising that Bach closes this Fantasia-fugue in minor mode ...

I played this piece for about 2 years and thought I had mastered it. Perhaps if I played it for another 10 years, I might get somewhere near this rendition. The higher tempo brings so much extra to it. The final return of the fugal theme after the double trill is really spine-tingling. I just cannot imagine how this could be improved upon, though I bet Jonathan Scott would be quick to tell me! Perhaps some sad folk would disapprove of the colourful registration; but I would say it simply speaks for itself. I could clearly see Bach's face lighting up with a broad and lasting smile, and a final emphatic nod of approval. Bravo!

Agreement is the only possible comment to this. Mr. Scott's interpretation is the most extraordinary I've heard for both voicing, musical interpretation and "musicianship". Bravo! Wonderful instrument, too!

I'd already noticed these recordings sounded great over speakers but I'm listening this one on headphones. The performance is flawless but seriously: props to your sound guy. If that is also you, I'm hugely impressed - no hiss, no creaks, just sonic beauty.

I believe that it is his brother, Tom (who is also a pretty decent pianist by any standard!).

Yup, Tom is the sound recordist and videographer for the channel (in addition to being a pianist, composer, and animator).

I love how the fugal themes are brought out each time they enter. This is my favorite interpretation by far!

Thank goodness for switching to diapasons after a few bars. Diapasons really serve this piece well: their plaintiveness complements the sighing motive of the fantasia theme. The instrument has wonderful, well developed flues, and Im glad you put them to use.

His Registration Was Superb. Loved How He Coupled The I Think The Trumpet En Chamade & Other Brass In The Pedals & Keeps Adding To The Fullness At The End. Very Rich Contrast With His Use Of The Strong Strings On The Manuels. Brilliantly Played.

I Am In Heven With The Way You Play That Piece. My Gosh It Was Perfect In Every Sence. The Fugue Was My Highlight. Did You Register Your Piece When You Played It Or Was It registered That Way. I Loved How You Mixed The Rich Luscious Strings With The Triumphal Trumpet Stops I Would Guess With 32 Ft Stops? What Ever It Was I Loved It & Your Played It Perfectly. I Have Never Herd That Fugue Before. I Do Love To Hear New Exciting Organ Music. Especially When One Plays It Like You Play It. BRAVO! BRAVO!

Virgil died in 1980 so Scott couldn't have studied with him. But, yeah, it's certainly in the same style.

I'm afraid I dislike this performance very much. What I enjoy in the Fantasia, as in a lot of Bach, is its continuity and the unrolling of an almost endless exploration of the original motif. That sense is destroyed by the constant fidgeting around with registration. I don't go to Bach for interesting sonorities. I go to him for the strength of his mind. There's nothing wrong with what he wrong. For God's sake leave it alone. Or if you are going to keep messing around with stops, at least let them balance so that we can hear all the parts.
