Without J.S. Bach no music, no music without Bach!
@PALongknife6 жыл бұрын
For those complaining that Madame Alain was "all head and no heart"-- I respectfully disagree that a conservative interpretation of the work is "heartless" or "soul-less". In fact, I applaud the artist's restraint and lack of ego when they perform a piece without injecting artificial drama into it. To each their own, but Madame Alain's recordings are among my favorites, as she has what I consider to be excellent sensibilities regarding tempo-- I think her tempos "flow" like few others-- and she also has a keen sense of each organ's acoustics and matching the sound of each organ with Bach's works accordingly. Again, just my opinion as a longtime Bach fan, but one thing I can say for certain is that "Faces of Classical Music" has done us all a great service by posting these videos!

In these current times of health, economic and political chaos, where the hope of improvement is very weak, listening to Bach allows us to remember that men are also capable of creating divine beauty in appearance simple and pure. Bach's music is a balm for the soul. And when it is interpreted by Marie-Claire Alain, just sublime.

I prefer Toccata d-moll"Dorisch" to the populer one. With Fuge it has deep religeous atmosphere. Sounds like corridors or arches of a monastery.
@michaelfitzgerald18658 жыл бұрын
Its amazing. I've been listening to Bach organ works since 1974 or so. Until today I did not know there was another Toccata and Fugue in d minor. I've have heard this piece before but it was only titled "Dorian". Made me feel really confused for a few minutes.
@whdaffer18 жыл бұрын
+Michael Fitzgerald : It really is in D-minor, but the key signature is C, which makes it notated as D-dorian (d-minor, but with a perfect 6th (b-natural) instead of the customary b-flat). Dorian mode is one of the 'church' modes from the medievel/renaissance, before the advent of diatonic harmony. The 'church modes' were the scales you got by starting at different places on the scale and going up an octave, but only playing the white keys. Ionian (our major scale) starts at C, Dorian at D, Phrygian at E, Lydian at F (but the music theoreticians required a flatted B anyway, to avoid the tritone between F and B-nat, so it's really a transposed Ionian, namely F-maj), Mixolydian at G and Aeolian (our relative minor) at A. However, it seems to me that the piece is really D-minor, but with an odd key signature.
@johnroberts16298 жыл бұрын
+Michael Fitzgerald This is the good one.
@jamesmoule32227 жыл бұрын
There is only one: "The Dorian". The famous one was surely not written by Bach. There is a lot of research to support this opinion: wrong style, poor fugal writing, uncharacteristic use of pedals...... Galant style was late in Bach's life when he was writing much better fugues (see The Art of Fugue, "St.Anne" Prelude and Fugue, etc, etc.

Musically speechless. The organ is indeed the King of Instruments that conveys sublime emotions, like in this work of art.
@danielzamora52728 жыл бұрын
Just FYI there is an inaccuracy in the contents info of this wonderful recording. Bach's work BWV 566 is the Toccata and Fugue in E Major, not C Major. Bach himself transposed it to C major for those instruments with "meantone" of which the Silbermann organ played by Mme. Alain is one of them. In modern tuning, it sounds like played in D major.

Marie-Claire Alain was known as the foremost Bach scholar for much of the last century. I can’t think of anyone else who recorded the nearly 300 organ works by Bach twice, and _Alain did it 3 TIMES!!_ When she played recitals, she performed everything from memory (my organ teacher studied with her in the 1960s, so I heard a lot o out Alain!). She was such a great organist, supreme! So I’m not a fan of Diane Bish. At all. And, just so you know, Alain recorded the second complete organ works because organs she felt represented Bach’s music best had been restored or finally made available to her. She recorded the third complete set because of the reunification of East and West Berlin, as well as others which had never been available.

@horstbilkenroth4457 жыл бұрын
@zarathustra96357 жыл бұрын

There is always a superficiality about Marie-Claire Alain's performances of Bach, as though she has played them to death and is just going through the motions. Compare Helmut Walcha at Alkmaar.
@jamesmoule32227 жыл бұрын
I agree with all of that. A synthesiser can do that too. I agree with the writer below who says "Listen to Walcha". For all his slow-downs, he made the music human. Alain is all head and no heart. She was undoubtedly a wonderful musician technically. I heard her improvise at Sydney Opera House and it was remarkable. Still cold though.
@jochanaan587 жыл бұрын
James Moule Mme. Alain dares to play the music exactly as written, with little added "personality;" and by doing so, she shows a humility that becomes the music well.
@jamesmoule11457 жыл бұрын
There is no such thing as playing music "exactly as written". A music score is not a computer program. The true musician understands the composer's message and plays the nuances that the composer could not express in black and white. Mme Alain was a technician. Most other organists go too far in the other direction.
