The JS Blak Box 3 is very easy to surf and I highly recommend it for upper end Beginner/ Intermediate / and Expert level surfers for 1-5' surf.
The BB3 checks all the boxes for a small wave performance board.
1. Good paddler
2. Quick get up and go speed
3. Projects with speed through maneuvers
4. Good drive off the bottom and big rail turns
I struggled a bit with it in 1-2’ surf due to the HYFI construction feeling a bit heavy under foot. Both boards carried good speed but I felt they lacked the pop or X Factor from turn to turn in 1-2’ surf that I normally get out of a light weight stringerless EPS board.
The weight factor is an easy fix… I would just custom order the BB3 in HYFI with a lighter glass job.
Overall the performance of the BB3 was solid and I had a great time surfing it in 3-5’ surf. I liked the HYFI construction in bigger surf due the extra weight. The board was easy to get on rail with its low/medium rail design and somewhat heavier stock glass job.
No noticeable chatter or vibration that I normally feel from other light weight EPS boards.
I also want to mention that I rode 2 stock 5’7” boards with the exact same dimensions but one was a Swallow Tail and the other a Squash Tail. You have to watch the review to find out which one I liked better.

Great review Noel! I have this BB3 squash 5ft 11” 34.4 litre I’m 75kgs 6ft. I’ve been out of surfing for about 8 yrs due to other family sporting commitments and I was after a something that was easy paddling but still have that high performance manoeuvrability. This board is amazing, easy paddling and fast and stable in 1 to 5ft surf. A must board to have in your quiver 🤙🏽

Im glad you mentioned the Monsta Box. In my head I thought it would be a daily driver as really it is a combination of the Blak Box and the Monsta "high performance" model in the JS line.

If you're thinking about buying an EPS JS I wouldn't recommend glassing it light. I have a stock EPS Monsta 8 and buckled it really badly after nose diving on a 2 foot floater. They like to say stringerless epoxies are stronger but in my opinion, they are weaker simply because they don't have a stringer. Simply put, you will no doubt buckle your EPS if you glass it light. Other than that, I think JS makes really good boards and I love their stringerless EPS ones. I think it's perfect for this board.

Great video Noel, this is a completely new chapter to me. I mean, honestly I thought that the liters of the surfboard was in a direct relationship with its weight, now you show us that isn't the case. I'm a little bit confused in this subject, weight/liters relation

charleschannel Liters are related to Weight of board in my opinion. These two BB3 in HYFY are a bit on the heavy side so they don’t have the extra float most other EPS boards do.

I’m surprised you surfed it as a 5’7. I thought you would of gone a custom 5’5 for this model. I would ride this the same length as my Neckbeard 2 I really like how it looked under your feet though.. I thought it looked really smooth. A few of my mates on the Goldy in Australia ride these boards and absolutely rip on them. In fact as a model you don’t see many guys look bad on them (and they’re everywhere here), even if their surfing is at a lesser level. Compare that to say something like the Hypto Krypto, where most guys who surfed them looked terrible. To have most guys who surf your board look good style wise is obviously a real credit to the design and how easy it is to ride. Great review as always.

Ok so ive now surfed my BB3 in HYFI a couple of times now and heres my thoughts.I ride a stock 6'2 x 20 3/4 x 2 3/4 = 38.3 L.My weight is 96 kgs and im 6'3.Firstly the weight.Ill try compare to my PU Lost Quiver Killer which is 6'2 and very similar dims.Glassing is the same on both boards 4 x 4/4...this board is super light.Id say approx 30% lighter than the QK.I know Noel says its not but to me it "feels" very light.Secondly i usually ride a 39 - 39.3 L shortboard.I sized my BB3 on the premise of an extra .5 - .8 L less for the epoxy.I can definately feel this is not as buoyant as my 39.3L QK.So my suggestion is to size your BB3 EXACTLY like your PU board litreage.Do not undervolume your BB3.Even though the thickness of the board is 2 3/4" the rails are med low and sharp.If i picked this up off the shelf without looking at the dims id think this board is 2 5/8",maybe 2 1/2".It just seems very "thin" to me.Is this a 1 - 2 ft groveller no way.In 1-2 ft i felt it wasnt at its best.In 3 - 4 it gets better.Id certainly say this is a daily driver and id think this board could easily handle 6 ft +.Hope this helps.

darren smith I got the swallow in 6 1. 36.5 liters. I don’t love the swallow.but it does work. I had the chance to ride a squash and it’s got more lift in the tail, doesn’t sink like the swallow. Also I had a breakthrough with my volume sizing. I was way over volumed. I myself is also 96kgs and I’m killing it on a 33 liter chili as we speak. These boards just don’t do what they’re supposed to if you’re oversized.

Hi Noel, awesome review! Debating on get this JS BB3 and the Sharpeye Disco Cheater. I’m on the East Coast surfing NJ beach break and looking for that board that is high performance based but will go good in the 1-5’maybe 6’ range. I’m 41 , 153lbs and reasonably fit surfing at least twice a week. Being realistic I’m on the tail end of the beginner spectrum or very low intermediate. Surfing for 2 years straight now with a winter season under my belt this year. Do you think the JS would work at around 31-33 liters 5-10ish?

Hey Noel, love the show! I’m 52 year old, 90kg and have a JS BlackBox 3 HYFY 6’0 swallow-tail at 34.6L with futures. What I like about the BB3 is the volume up the front which provides exceptional chest support and paddling. I have various large fins sets (AM2 (tech flex & Honey), Jordy (old model), Jack, Mayhem, Hayden, John John) and medium sets (John John, Rasta quad). My question is this: when riding in a pool where pocked surfing is required how can I loosen up the board. I’m particularly struggle on my back hand to go vert. Interested in your thoughts, even if you recommend an additional fin purchase. Thank-you

Simon Durkin The Hayden fins have the most pivots. Keep riding those... the only set with more pivot are the Legacy P8 but the HS1 fins you have are good enough. To get in the pocket faster maybe consider a shorter board for the pool... like the Astro POP

I have a BB3 squash and a CI Rocket Wide both PU. The BB is a better paddler and fits in the small wave pockets better but the RW is easier to pivot and has more flow if the waves are lined up with better shape. I'd recommend the BB for junkier surf and beach breaks like the one you surfed here. How would you compare?

I have both but my BB3 is PU and the RW is in SpineTek. The RW grovels way better in 0-2ft, BB3 has a much narrower range and needs more wave 2ft+ even thou it’s almost 2l more volume to the RW. You have both in the exact same volume?

Karl, my RW has 1L more volume than the BB3. For me the BB3 works great in punchy windy and junkier conditions like we get here on the east coast. To my eye it seems Noel is moving much better in the beach break and a bit sluggish at the point where the RW would be a better call. Stoked either way! Both are good boards.

I put my Lost Quiver Killer next to my BB3 and the BB3 has more entry and exit rocker...i suspect why not the best 1-2 ft groveller as my QK is not considered a groveller.

Matt Hegarty I like the BB3 better.... I would just get the BB3 in a lighter construction. The 3DX goes pretty good but nothing special. The Wilco F13 is way better than the 3DX. Cheers

Great show! is there any chance you would review the JS Xero lineup? JS discontinued the BB3 and the monstabox and came up with the Xero series (Sub Xero, Xero and the Xero Gravity), as i'm looking for a board to replace my BB3 i struggle to find any in depth review or feed back on the Xero model compared to the BB3, JS say that it's the closest to the BB3 (BB3 rocker, Monstabox rails and Monsta outline), but i don't buy that as the BB3 outline and width upfront was the part that made it so popular because of ease of paddling. I hope one day you can review the Xero and compare it to the BB3 and the monstabox, JS has ruined it for me and i'm lost now looking for a board close to the BB3.

@@jesse2109 I think most of the JS boards have more rocker compared to most other boards I test. I suggest boards that have lower entry rocker for a smoother take off with hood speed. Xabier xabi The Phantom is a Daily Driver for 3-6’ surf... that hits the same wave range as this BB3. The Phantom is easier to surf and has better flow. I like the Phantom better.

Tom Curran I made a brace by cutting up a bootie. I have a surf Knot that hurts when I surf a lot. The bootie reduces the friction... you need to cover yours so it can heal. I’ve had what you have and if you don’t cover it and keep it from rubbing on the board it will turn into a crater.

PC Carbon is stiffer, so in theory, better for bigger waves and/or better surfers who can generate their own speed well. PC is less stiff, and Neo Glass even less so. So, the Neo Glass is actually best for small waves and/or lesser skill, but it's also a matter of personal preference, so you could explore and see how you like them if you get a chance. I know a guy who shreds, and he rides Neo Glass in everything, he just likes the feel. I still haven't fully explored that myself, but I know I prefer Reactor fins in all my boards, as I just love the loose feeling, it's just my style, possibly because I grew up throwing skateboards around, so they give a similar feeling, but I'm not sure. I've given a bunch of different fins a go in all types of waves and boards, and just love Reactors for everything. I know another guy who loves AMs in everything, and he was sponsored by Rip Curl, so got to try every fin under the sun. Personal taste is king. Hope that helps.

Ricky Cole Sampler is way faster and grovels great in 1-3’ surf. It maxes out at 4’. The BB3 is more of a daily driver and best in 3-6’+ surf. I would not put these two boards in the same class....

Hi Noel, first of all thank you for all your helpfull videos. I live in Canada near a good River wave that i surf multiple times a week during summer. I'm intermediate/advanced in the River but probably low intermediate in the ocean cause i dont have the chance to go often. I want to buy a daily driver to pair with my 5'6 JS psycho nitro. I will use it in the River when conditions are good and on occasional trip to the east coast and central America. I dont have much choice here but i can either get a squash bb3 or a holy grail both at 5'9 at a shop near me. Which one would you chose ? I'm 5'9 and 155 lbs, 29yo. Cheers !

Michael Shroads My pressure dents were extremely light on both boards. Good durability on pressure dents..., if you get a ding or even a small crack fix it ASAP as all EPS foam Constructions sick water in big time.

BB3 on a scale of 1-10 I give it a 5. The RW Squash Tail I say 7.5 out of 10. The RE is faster and easier to shred especially in slower waves. The BB3 needs a wave to go good.

Kevin O'Loughlin The BB3 is a bit tighter and not as quick rail to rail compared to the HG. They are both good in 3-6’. I would say the BB3 is a tad more user friendly

Steve Link Sampler is better in 1-2’ surf. To be honest if want a sick small wave performance board I recommend the JS Air17X. It goes mental in 2-6’ surf. Not ideal for 1’ surf but keep your Sampler for that. Cheers

@@GeniusUnleashed He lives in the Gold Coast, a mix of good points and good beachies, a mix of fat through to full on hollow barrels. Autumn and Winter fires, but Spring and Summer can have long flat spells. And yep, a heap of the top pros live and grew up on the Goldy.

Amazing after being out of loop for 10 yrs how much detail is reviewed......maybe too much. The human changes day to day so hard to be consistent whereas piece of foam doesnt.....golfing is similar whereas one day club is perfect and next it ismt but club hasnt changed we did type o thing

Kirk Dunn I believe the foam does change every day... the pressure dents and pop in the foam will not last forever. Much like the grooves on your wedges in golf. New wedges offer more traction when they are new..... after a couple years the grooves wear down a bit and offer less bite or jizz.
