Thanks for helping to put eyes on the fundraiser project, it really means a lot. I love Powered Up, though, I don't play it as much as I should. It was a really ambitious game with a ton to do. I hope Capcom eventually revisits the idea, because having so many playable characters is really neat. There's even an unarmored Mega Man that you can unlock that just kicks. I guess he's practicing for Mega Man Soccer. And of course the music pun still exists. Don't tell me that you don't like 'Mega & Roll' music. That's practically all I listen to! Thanks again for the help. It truly means a lot.

I feel like the Powered Up style could've worked pretty well for remakes of the gameboy games. I mean, Powered Up's level design already feels gameboyesque, so it just kinda makes sense to me. I hope Capcom will consider re-releasing this game complete with the downloadable content like Roll.

I think the biggest reason Powered Up and Maverick Hunter X are overlooked compared to their older counterparts is accessibility. It's almost impossible to play either game legally today because they're stuck on the PSP, while Megaman and X1 are available on every modern gaming platform. I feel if these games were re-released today there would be more incentive to play them over the originals, Powered up more so than Maverick Hunter X.

It was a mistake making them psp exclusives just for the sake of the psp library. MM was not too hot anymore at that time for that strategy to work, it needed multiplatform plans. I don't know, maybe put both games on the Wii with updated graphics, or the 3DS, and later consoles (digitally). Capcom was too focused on their blockbuster franchises to make a good decision for MM. And those two remakes actually had potential, especially MHX with its fascinating narrative direction.

One thing you didn't mention is how all the master robots have new attacks during their boss fights, like cut man throwing a giant cutter and guts man digging into the ground. When playing on hard mode, these attacks are more aggressive. It makes the boss fights way more engaging and fun than the original. Plus the wily fortress bosses on hard mode change their moves up as well. Like yellow devil has a different tornado pattern and shoots a laser out of his eye and copy MegaMan only uses charge shots. I also love when you play as another master robot, they have their own story mode and dialogue in cutscenes. MegaMan gets kidnapped instead and you have to fight him in the stage of the robot master you are currently playing. Man I love this game.

I think the staff surprisingly got a lot of good ideas to modernize the classic series beyond its typical barebones content format. It was surprising exactly because the format was oversaturated, the classic franchise was abandoned, the planned collection of classic games was cancelled... so it was very unexpected to find that creative effort on classic MM at that time. That initiative was important because the changes in gaming, in the market and in the consumer public made MM a gradually less appealing franchise, besides the problem of the oversatured format. MM was (is) stuck to a formula born in the late 80s, that made for a short game, that was only acceptable in the Nes era. As times go, larger doses of tolerance are needed to stay passionate and supportive to such repetitive and barebones games that are finished in few hours. That tolerance is more common for hardcore fans, not the general public. So the franchise had (still has) the challenge of figuring out how to add more content and become a more appealing product in the modern market. And i think making more playable characters is a great idea. Even better if they have personal talking lines, abilities, etc... in a way the experience feels fairly unique. The level maker is also interesting and it would be much better explored nowadays. Anyways, for that time the devs did a great job. A modern MM game would need to go further of course, but those ideas were a great starting point.

The best thing about Powered Up was the stage builder, because just think about it, for those people that have a lot of imagination and time, they could build whatever stages they wanted to do and then send it to their friends or whatever to see if they could beat their stages, and since this thing was on the PSP which was a portable device, you could just do that anywhere, and I don't recall ever seeing another platformer with stage building functionality on a portable device during the PSP generation, so its really amazing that this game did it first than Mario Maker on the 3DS and stuff. At first Capcom was also really encouraging people to try out the level creation stuff, because if you had gone online to the Capcom servers when they were still around, you would have been able to download the Mania levels which were officially made by Capcom's developers, and those levels really tested your skills to the limit, such as a very hard level with Cutman called Cut Mania, where you had 1 bar of HP which meant that you could not take ANY damage, but you had to platform on a moving platform while doing wall kicks and stuff and avoiding the flamethrower hazards and a bunch of other stuff, and I don't recall there being checkpoints in it either, so you had to do it in one go and that was just amazing, out of my friends group I was the only one who manage to beat that level, which is why I still brag about it to this day, but its a pity that I lost the Pro Duo card that had the save data, because it means that if I ever want to experience those levels again, I would need to mess around with the repositories that archived that data, and I don't really want to go through that hassle.

The main issue that level editor has is that for some reason they didn't actually program in a "clearable" flag in the code... which emans that YES you can make a totally impossible level and upload it to the servers... which is a bit yikes

@carlosaugusto9821 14 күн бұрын
That was truly ahead of time... and that is very unexpected from MM, that was already pretty well known for being a franchise of repetitive gameplay and ideas and nothing new to offer. Besides, the classic series was not doing well in the 2000s... with no new game in a long time, the cancelled Gba collection, etc. So in that situation it was incredible to see that level of effort and creativity coming from the MM devs. Creativity in a way that even MM11 lacks, to some degree. And the fact is that a level maker would be an appealing idea for modern MM games since the 2010s.

I wouldn't say they don't care. The reason why Mega Man 11 took so long was because after Inafune left and because of the... controversial release of Mighty No. 9, Capcom staff were very hesitant to touch Mega Man. They knew that if they made a new Mega Man game, it'd have to be REALLY good, or the fans would want their heads on a silver platter. When the director (I think) decided to make MM11, the staff basically forced him to play the other Mega Man games to make sure he knew what he was doing.
@carlosaugusto9821
@carlosaugusto9821 14 күн бұрын
@@SaiyanGamer95 But that's the meaning of disinterest. Like, there's no excuse. We are talking about the maker of RE, DMC and MH, a powerhouse of the industry that is used to high stakes triple A projects. If Capcom was really interested in MM they would go all out and make it work, with the usual ambitious energy they take on those much riskier triple A games. On the other hand MM is cheap to make, it's a "micro project" compared to Capcom's average scale of works, it's always been repetitive, and that's what the fans expect, and the company is aware of that. Yet nothing happens. There's no other explanation for these delays. Ok, it must be hard to satisfy the target audience of MM fans who are too used to MM, too hardcore about it, and are boomers, at the age of being too critical about things. But, again, that is absolutely not a big challenge for the makers of RE, a franchise that's been frequently reinvented over the years. (And by the way, the original RE creator left in the late 00s) So that's what i mean earlier... total disinterest. They don't even want to outsource MM (for example Inti Creates, the makers of MMZ, ZX, MM9 and 10).

MHX probably needed to be multiplatform to have better chances of doing well in sales, then the company would be motivated to continue. In theory the X series was in a fairly good situation to do well, because gaming standards changed radically and it became impossible to accept such a short and basic game like MM being made for ps3 and such... but simpler games were fine for handhelds, so MMX remakes had to be explored only in those systems.

I didn't play Powered Up for a long time, and now I regret it - as of now, it's my favorite game in the Classic series. My only major complaint about it is having to complete every character campaign in every difficulty in order to 100% the game with that character. Also, as of now, it's impossible to unlock Roll unless you get a complete save file from the internet. Another thing you didn't mention, probably because you didn't play with the other characters too much: each level has alternative routes that can only be accessed by the Robot Master who is weak against the level's boss. The alternative route in Cut Man's level can only be accessed by Bomb Man, for example. Granted, these paths contain platforming challenges specific to that Robot Master and only reward you with extra lives and stuff for the level builder, but they're still a fun addition that contribute to the game's replayability. Oh, one detail about Copy Robot: he completely changes his strategy depending on the difficulty. On Normal and Easy, he changes between special weapons and you have to hit him with his corresponding weakness. On Hard, he only uses the Buster's charge shot and has no weaknesses.

Nice, thanks for sharing the info, i don't know much about this game. It really has more great ideas than i imagined. The staff that worked on this game came up with a solid set of new ideas to flesh out the typical basic content value of the classic MM games. The problem is that MM continued stuck to a formula from the Nes era, and that was only acceptable at that time, meanwhile gaming was going through notable changes thanks to the technology changes in the late 90s and even bigger changes in the 00s. The game became gradually less appealing not only because of the repetitive sequels but because it is too short and simple and barebones in content. Alternative routes is a great idea to make the experience feel fresher for each different choice of robot. Some of that already existed in MM & Bass. To me that needs to be mandatory in the level design of a MM game. Also, these ideas make the MMP model look like a more solid base for the future of the franchise than MM11, to some degree. I believe the future MM game, if it ever gets done, needs to offer much more content (and meaningful content) than MM11 to justify itself in the current market, where it's not even hard to find indie games outdoing the MM formula in content volume. So it might be good to take some ideas from MMP.

Literally every U.S. source before Powered Up used Rock as Mega Man's pedestrian name, which we all get on account of Roll's name never being changed to anything else. Capcom was just going through a "Rock removal" phase around this time, and it didn't do the series any favors. Similarly, ZX has "MEGA System" and "Megamerge" despite the characters audibly yelling "Rock On!" in gameplay. That change was completely unnecessary too and I still hope they undo it if we ever get a ZX3.

I consider Powered Up to be one of the best Remakes ever made simply because of how above and beyond it goes, like, they could've just done a 1-1 Remake and called it a day, but they not only completely reimagined it, but also made that 1-1 Remake a side mode, but also by adding it all the optional playable characters who each has their own version of the story when they could've just made you skip the Cutscenes and remove all dialogue when playing as them, or the Level Builder which was definitely unnecessary but cool as hell to have. I just think it's a perfect remake in just about every way.

@@thefollower2933 And that remake format helped to fix (maybe not entirely but in good part) MM's very old problem of lacking in content. The game is too short and the sequels kept always following the same barebones formula until now, with little meaningful content to motivate sticking to the game. So besides the typical MM fan who always come up with personal challenges to replay, MM is short and has little else to offer to the average outsider gamer. So MM needs desperately to provide bigger content package in modern releases. Like, since the time of release of MM11 I thought it was a mistake not follow these ideas of MMP.

In some ways the game goes beyond MM11. I really like the concern to offer a bigger content package... i think it's a big weak point of the MM franchise. The games are too short, they are stuck to a formula meant for the Nes. But technology only grew, most old franchises as well, while MM stayed the same. So those ideas of adding many extras and even a level maker was na excellent initiative to finally evolve the game's typical content package.

@@fudgegorilla That format of MMP showed a good direction to modernize MM in the sense of providing more content, that I believe it's the main weak point of the franchise. MM is too short and barebones in content, there's little reason to stick with it for much longer, unless it's the average MM fan. So it became gradually less appealing for outsiders, as cheap indie games can outdo it in meaningful content volume. So to begin with, I think a future MM, remake or not, needs to have more characters to play and they would have different enough gameplay differences and story. And modern remakes being 3 in 1... The default game is the combination of MM1+2+3, with MM2 and 3 unlocked as we keep going. And each game would have the same style of MMP of adding story content, dialogues, etc. And maybe it would be nice if there's alternative paths. Of course the game would have a level maker. Now that is bulky content that is worth the modern price tag, so the game would have better chances of doing well.

We had crazy Mega Man saturation going on at the time. Mega Man in general would likely have been more popular if there were less of it back then. There were like four _concurrent_ Mega Man _series_ fighting for attention, and the Battle Network games got into the nasty Pokemon habit of releasing two versions of the same game with a few keyword swaps or encounter tables altered, both at full price, chasing total sales to the franchise over total sales to an individual entry in the series. Also, the demographics of the kinds of gamers who would have preferred something like Mega Man Powered Up fit better _proportionally_ with the Nintendo DS install base than the PSP install base. I know _I_ would have gotten Powered Up or Maverick Hunter X on DS, not only because of longer running Nintendo nerdery of knowing Mega Man from my birth (he and I are both children of 87 after all) but also because I already had that, and wasn't going to buy a PSP for the literally exactly two games released on it I was interested in (these Mega Man remakes, naturally). Would sales still have been disappointingly low? Probably.

The saturation is an old problem in the franchise... but from the way i see it, a big problem is the specific saturation of a game that is barebones in content and refuses to grow. The franchise is stuck in that formula made for the late 80s, that makes for adventures of some hours. The makers never had a real vision of future for MM, they never had any idea of how to expand the 80s formula, they just wanted to exploit it cheaply and maybe believed they could get away with it for a long time. But the particular technology progress in the mid 90s was such, that it quickly and easily changed the game making standards, and naturally changed the market and the public. And many veteran franchises corresponded to those new standards and expectations. So it became gradually harder to respect MM's barebones content outside the bubble of hardcore fans, which explains the falling numbers. Now this is just a personal opinion but i believe that situation also helped to give MMX an edge over MM, because MMX has more backtracking to find the items and armor, and X4 even used double campaigns with different stories, and X5-6 even used 2 armors... while MM continued the same. In that sense, the efforts to flesh out the old and oversaturated MM formula in MMP, adding value to the content package with solid fresh ideas, was incredible and unexpected considering how washed up MM was looking like in the 00s. Even nowadays the idea of playing with multiple characters and especially all bosses, each with unique powers, is amazing. And the level maker would be even more popular if it was executed nowadays.

@@carlosaugusto9821 The saturation at the time had more to do with the huge amount of Battle Network and Starforce content churning out rapidly compared to the trickle of actual platformers. There were A LOT, many of them poorly aping Pokemon's marketing gimmick of arbitrarily gating minor content changes between two cartridges and having the gallstones to charge full price for both. When there's one to four Mega Man RPGs coming out a year and one platformer coming out every two or three and a lot of sameyness within what IS put out, something's gonna give. It was actually AFTER a brief break that 9 and 10 came out - part of why 9 was lauded so much is because it'd been a few years since X8, Network Transmission, and the PSP remakes that many fans didn't have a chance to play because they were on the less popular hardware. It also scaled back a lot on the storytelling and mechanical bloat that other relatively-recent platformers in the series like the ZX duology had acted on. 10 not being as witty, charming, or in-jokey but more like "What if Mega Man 2 again _again_ but with cutscenes?" was basically what spelled out it was time for a break altogether, and what a refreshing break it turned out to be! 9 and 10 also showed a lot of fans who used to constantly praise 2 as the series' high point something: The slide from 3 and charge from 4 did in fact greatly improve the boss design and stage layout potential of Mega Man games in wonderful ways. Thus many fan games started going out of their way to include these features.

Funnily enough, my very first time playing MM1 I figured Cut Man's weapon would be the weakness against Bomb Man since you're cutting his fuses. It was definitely amusing when I played Powered Up for the first time and saw that the weakness changed in a way that lined up with my original thoughts on weakness order. I have to defend Oil Slider as well. It's not really appealing at first but getting used to it's controls and how it can be used against enemies actually makes it one of the more fun weapons in the line-up with tons of use-cases.

They really said "We need to remake Mega Man 1. It only had 10 levels. How many more should we add?" and Inafune said "Add 568 more. And a level-maker." I love Powered Up, It is INSANE how good it is, but there is one critical flaw with it: Oil Man. Every Robot Master that plays differently than their boss fight plays better than that. Cut Man with his two cutters and double-jump, Bomb Man with his 4 different bomb angles, Guts Man destroying AI like Minecraft Steve in Smash Ultimate, and Time Man's two awkard-angle shots that surprisingly can hit almost any enemy outside their attack vectors. ice Man can freeze enemies but he mostly just plays like his boss fight, same with Fire Man and Elec Man, but they're already so solid changing them isn't necessary. Even Rock and Roll (I'm not calling him Mega) are decently playable, sure they're melee units and meant to be more difficult but they're an actual skill check. But fucking _Oil Man._ He plays so bad I think he wasn't tested. His Oil Slider blob only does a single point of damage and has a pathetic downward arc. If it lands on the floor, you can step on the blob and it turns into a sled that can crash into enemies for much higher damage. The problem is IT DOESN'T HAVE INVINCIBILITY FRAMES. And most bosses deal MORE damage when you touch them than if you get hit by their weapon (something that is bafflingly common in the entire Mega Man series, not just Classic). And that hitbox is _insanely_ close to your hurtbox. That weapon is literally a suicide button. And unlike Mega Man, Oil Man can't swap weapons. And if that blob misses the enemy you _cannot shoot his weapon until the blob disappears_ so you have to step on it and waste time. And enemies' attacks are INSANELY fast. Elec Man and Fire Man shoot in like two frames, and if you're trying to 100% the game it is outright impossible because Oil Man, slider or blob, does one singular point of damage to Fire Man. And Fire Man's regular shots kill Oil Man in 5 hits, 2 if you get hit by his special attack. Also this boss rush sucks, you don't get ANY healing for beating a boss. So the Boss Rush is already an extremely difficult slog on Normal or Hard difficulty for any of the robot masters because they still have their weaknesses, so they have one fight that's a really tough one. But Oil Man basically requires emulator save states to try and frame-by-frame beat Fire Man above Easy difficulty.

no man. it absolutely was because the Nintendo DS was EVERYWHERE. i loved the PSP, i had one, a lot of my friends had one, but we were nerds. the PSP in its heyday was really a flex item. it was an iPod, a video game, a phone in some cases, a movie player. it was a different time. it was the Zune. it was a Windows Mobile phone. it was in a category that put you in a different place yeah, Mega Man never really sells well but the fanbase is huge. but to underestimate how popular the DS was is incredible. Pokemon by itself carried the DS, and it got SO MANY RPGS. if you look at the library its so incredible how many great games that had. the Pokewalker was so popular i would see it in bars and clubs and all these girls predating the egirl generation carrying their cute eevees or pikachus (it was seriously that) and having a DS in their handbags. i might be cheating here, im in LA, but damn that was iconic. the 3DS era continued the same traditions. and once they released the mega man legacy collection on 3DS it was over they should definitely bring this game back. i 100% it and later sold it for retail value because i had everything done and the guy got to play it how he wanted. its one of the best Mega Man games ever. up there with 7, the first 4 X games and Battle Network 3

I feel like in general, this remake is very underrated. It's got less weird choices than Mario 64 DS does, IMO. And most of the changes make sense or improves the game, AND gives you a faithful version alongside it. Too bad it came out during some of the series' weakest sales. Mega Man is decently popular, but I would like more and more people to get into the series as it is. They're great games.

This is literally the best video game remake I've ever played. They were supposed to remake Mega Man 2 in this style as well, but it was cancelled, due to the low sales of this game. The best mistake was making it a PSP exclusive. They should have had it on PS2 and/or PS3 as well, then it probably would have sold a lot more. And even to this day, it can still only be played on PSP. It would made as a nice bonus feature on one of the Legacy Collections.

The difficulty definitely knew how to be difficult, especially if you played Oil Man on hard. The missions were awesome, and tested ur knowledge/skill very well. There’s just so much to replay and unlock. AND, the stage builder was amazing, even having elements from Mega Man 2. I was enjoying stuff like this long before Super Mario Maker came along. Extremely fun game, and such a tragic shame that this game didn’t get enough attention.

There's a few other weapon changes beyond the ammo count. Most don't go through walls (with some exceptions like Rolling Cutter), Fire Storm is now affected by water, and most importantly: Hyper Bomb has an actual hitbox now so it can hurt enemies on contact. It becomes one of the best weapons now from keeping high damage and a good explosive radius (as well as good ammo, I think you get 14 of them)

I still think Capcom is leaving money on the table not re-releasing them, especially Maverick Hunter X; I recall hearing that DiVE was built off the MHX engine, and they made DiVE assets for most things that show up in X1, so an HD version of MHX with the DiVE assets would probably be pretty cost-efficient.

X1 and its not even close. Superior soundtrack and animations/graphics. The sprites still look good, the polygons on MHX look godawful and the animations are stiff and janky. It's the same thing with X8 and something like X4. X4 still looks amazing, while X8 looked bad on release and now looks worst. No wonder it got a SNES style Demake that everyone has universally praised. Yeah, the added story beats for MHX are really cool and a very welcome addition but that's basically the one thing it has over the original.

@Iridium-77-g I wouldn't agree. The method of getting the hadouken is better, Chameleon Sting can now be aimed in multiple directions, better balanced maverick fights, and lots of cool changes in the final stages. Maverick Hunter X is the best Mega Man X game, in my opinion.

I disagree with the presentation being much worse than X1. It doesn't even look ugly because of the better artstyle more similar to the one we know from X4-X7, rather than strange one present in X8. And it looks decent for PSP, I don't get the hate. I'd disagree with OST being worse too. I really like how it was reimagined, for example Octopus' theme having the bubble sounds and I love guitar, so there's that as well. Also, it has more to offer than just better story. For one, the weapons have been buffed. I love the fact you stack charged versions of Chameleon Sting and Rolling Shield with other weapons, as well as that charged Electric Spark works as a screen nuke. It has superior item game, as you can get four armor parts in the first four stages in a boss order with the least amount of backtracks that only requires you to beat 3 bosses buster only. In original, you'd have to wait up until sixth stage, assuming you can't perform getting a heart tank in Jungle Stage by using charged Shotgun Ice, which is difficult on SNES, but really easy on PSP. In addition to that, the bosses have been better balanced. Easier ones like Chill Penguin and Storm Eagle have been buffed, while harder ones like Sting Chameleon and Bospider have been nerfed. Annoying sections, like the one with green hovering platforms and Anglerge midboss in a room with spikes are more bearable in the remake, thanks to platforms being closet to eachother and Anglerge's pull being weaker. One more thing I'd like to point out, is that you no longer have to die 5 times before unlocking hadouken. Instead, you have to avoid any damage before reaching the capsule, which is easier than it sounds, thanks to earlier mentioned weapon stacking.

Part of the PSP thing, it did sell respectable numbers eventually, but Capcom came out with MMMHX and MMPU pretty early in the PSP's life when few people had PSPs. Of course the remakes didn't sell well. Especially Powered Up, because Capcom never made it available digitally. If the games had come out later in the PSP's life, maybe they would have sold more. I still think Capcom should have just ported them on XBLA and PSN instead, though. And again, they should be in the respective Legacy Collections.
