Btw, it was only after this was uploaded that I realized my scaling issue was fixed in original mode. That is definitely the go to mode.
@docotrot12526 жыл бұрын
You’re objectively wrong though - the aspect ratio should _NOT_ be 8:7, but 4:3. CRT's didn’t really have a native resolution like modern displays do. This means that the image was stretched or squeezed to 4:3 regardless of resolution, more often than not resulting in non-square pixels. The SNES used 256x224 with a pixel ratio of 7:6, i.e. pixels wider than they are tall. On the other hand there were stuff like Capcom’s CPS-1, -2 and -3 arcade boards which used 384x224 with a pixel ratio of 7:9, i.e. pixels taller than they are wide. Every single game on either of these platforms (with aforementioned resolutions) was, without a shadow of a doubt, intended to be displayed on 4:3 CRT monitors/TV's. You mention scaling, and the important thing would be _integer_ scaling, and you obviously do get that with the square pixel 8:7 mode. The _better_ option would be 48:35 (slightly wider than 4:3 but a hell of a lot better an approximation than 8:7), which could be achieved by scaling 6x horizontally and 5x vertically, resulting in a negligible vertical ”overscan” of 4 SNES pixels on a 1080p display. (With 4K you could get the desired 4:3 with integer scaling.)
@RetropolisZone6 жыл бұрын
I don't get where all the talk is coming from that 8:7 is objectively wrong. Why is it that so many modern ports and re-releases of old games look like their native resolution instead of how they would like when they are stretched or squished on a CRT? Why does Sonic Mania look like the Genesis games in 320x224, and not how the Genesis games do on a CRT (so slightly thinner)? Why is Mega Man's sprite of around the same width/height ratio in the X1-X3 games in 8:7, as the sprites in X4-X6? Mega Man is clearly fatter in X1-X3 in the CRT aspect ratio than he is in the PS1 games. Why is it that so many square/round objects in X1-X3 are oblong in a CRT aspect ratio, when they look perfectly square in 8:7? This isn't even mentioning multi-platform games like Toy Story, where the sprites look the same in 256x224 on SNES as they do on the Genesis in 320x224; display these two versions on a CRT and they have completely different proportions. Let's just leave it up to preference, so that people can choose which aspect ratio they want, and call it a day. No need to say one option is factually correct while the other isn't, because there are arguments for both sides. Even Nintendo on the NES and SNES Classic devices have the options. If Nintendo, the designer of these consoles, has the option for CRT or 8:7, clearly even they can't decide or at least understand that people have different opinions on the topic.

@docotrot12526 жыл бұрын
Retropolis Zone Well, what's _prefererred_ individually is of course subjective, I'm not going to argue with that. But there is an objective answer to the question "What aspect ratio was intended by the developers?" and it's 4:3, not 8:7. This means that if the aspect ratio on this compilation "should" be anything, it should be 4:3. An added 8:7 mode of course doesn't hurt if that's what you prefer, but it's objectively wrong to say that that should be the default. That's what I meant with "objectively wrong", to clarify. _"Why is it that so many modern ports and re-releases of old games look like their native resolution instead of how they would like when they are stretched or squished on a CRT?"_ By saying "look like their native resolution" you are telling me you don't understand what I wrote, and that's the problem I was trying to address to begin with - not understanding how CRT's work. You only say "look like their native resolution" because you're used to how modern televisions work, with a fixed native resolution with square pixels. Back in the day there was nothing restricting you to only using square pixels and of course THE DEVELOPERS KNEW THAT and designed the games accordingly! This is my point. _"Why does Sonic Mania look like the Genesis games in 320x224, and not how the Genesis games do on a CRT (so slightly thinner)?"_ Because they thought that 320x224 with square pixels is close enough to 4:3. Perfectly reasonable. _"Why is Mega Man's sprite of around the same width/height ratio in the X1-X3 games in 8:7, as the sprites in X4-X6? Mega Man is clearly fatter in X1-X3 in the CRT aspect ratio than he is in the PS1 games."_ That's true, but it's a new sprite and a new design entirely so it doesn't prove anything really. _"Why is it that so many square/round objects in X1-X3 are oblong in a CRT aspect ratio, when they look perfectly square in 8:7?"_ This is actually your only good point. (Not the squares nessecarily, but definitely the circles.) Typically it's the other way around on the SNES and that would obviously be an argument in my favor. The short answer is symmetry: It's simply easier to do perfect squares and circles. Also, sometimes it actually is the best approximation given the low resolution they have to work with. There are cases, however, even in the X games where the opposite of what you're saying is true, which means they went out of their way to design "round objects" asymmetrically, which proves my point. _"This isn't even mentioning multi-platform games like Toy Story, where the sprites look the same in 256x224 on SNES as they do on the Genesis in 320x224; display these two versions on a CRT and they have completely different proportions."_ They simply used the same sprites but for different resolutions; that doesn't prove anything. The platform the game was designed for first would tell you how the sprite was intended to be displayed. It's not rocket science. Perhaps more important than any other technicality, I don't think you have to go beyond the fact that _at least_ 99% of gamers back in the 90's played SNES games in 4:3 on CRT's, so it's clearly the authentic experience in that regard. The screenshots on SNES boxes are also displayed in 4:3, further proving my point. Finally, I'd like you to ask yourself which of the following two scenarios seems more plausible: 1. The game designers designed everything with square pixels in mind and upon realizing that almost everyone played them in 4:3 on CRT's they thought to themselves: "It's a shame. I guess we'll have to wait a decade or two until monitors with fixed square pixel resolutions are the standard and then finally people will get to experience the games the way we intended." 2. The game designers knew that the games were going to be played on 4:3 CRT's and designed them accordingly.

Despite the disheartening reviews on Steam, I decided to buy both collections anyway because I know for a fact that you can't always trust these reviews, and you know how it is with people these days; some of them even put a bad review on purpose 'just for the lols', or just come up with anything just to piss off dedicated fans like you and I. That doesn't mean that both collections are flawless and have 0 issues. I did encounter some audio issues here and there, but it wasn't something major and certainly not that bad to just downright not recommend buying the collections like some people mentioned on their Steam reviews. You can't believe the amount of fun I'm having with these games. There's so much fun to be had, and the giant collection of arts, music etc, are so very much appreciated.

@PeixeKing4 жыл бұрын
Except the Steam version suffers from a lot of problems, like input lag, slowdown, bad reolution scaling, and overall poor optmization. It's pretty dishonest to claim that the bad reviews are there "just for the lols", considering that most are from people whom bought the game and had a bad experience with it, a lot of them "dedicated fans". I don't know about the PS4 version, but as of now, apparently they didn't correct the problems with the Steam version. I tried to play X3 in the collection, and the controls felt unresponsive, and everything was just too slow, so I tried the game in Snes9x just to see if I wasn't going crazy, and yeah, the emulator ran it in 60fps, no slowdown, no input lag (no noticeable input lag, anyway), and better pixel scaling; same deal with X1 and X2; X4 was at least playable, but it crashed during my first boss fight. On PC, at least, the collection is objectively worse than playing on an emulator. MMXLC2 might be alright, I don't know, but it's the worst half of the collection, anyway.
@PeixeKing4 жыл бұрын
Also, J can go about "240p" all he wants, but the MMX Collection on PS2 is far more playable than the PC version, years earlier, on inferior hardware. If you want a good experience and high resolutions, forget the collection, just emulate it.

I was also thinking that a reboot would be the best for the series. If they ever make a new X game I think they should go the same direction as the first 3 games (with core characters like x, zero, sigma, and even Dr. Cain), but take it like MHX and tell a different story. I think that maybe changing the original maverick cast would be the best since that way they could be their own separate story-lines (and, just maybe, fix the continuity after X5)

While I want to see a new game in the X series, I can only imagine what the next game would be like. I wonder if they will just go with X9 and keep on the same timeline, or if they plan on working with the Maverick Hunter X timeline, remake the rest of the games and try to fix the convoluted story from X6 onwards. I would love to see the story fixed, just because it really messes up with the timeline of the later games. But I honestly don't expect that to happen. Not at this point at least.

yeah if they were smart they would either reboot X1 and go from there. That, or make a game that takes place after X5, Id argue even go back and make X4 the last canon game tbh. You say the x collection on gc/ps2 were lazy, which is probably true, but this also seems quite lazy, especially in regards to x5 and x6. For X5, they could've made Alia optional like THEY ALREADY DID IN X6 WHEN THE GAME INITIALLY CAME OUT. They could've hired voice actors for the X6 cutscenes, as well. They could've fixed some huge stage design problems in X6 to make the experience somewhat bearable. For instance in metal shark player's stage, if you drop in that area with the light capsule behind the nightmares, you should have the option to go back to the top area instead of being forced to die multiple times and get a game over like in the original if your character couldn’t make the jump. They could've also changed the nightmare system to where if you fail to save a reploid, you can come back to the stage and try again. Or they could've adjusted the camera a bit so there'd be less "leaps of faith.” They could've EASILY fixed the slow down in X1-X3 if they gave even a little bit of effort. Hell, mega man anniversary collection for gc/ps2/xbox fixes the slow down in 3 and 4, which make the games so much more fun to play. Like these things don't change the games, they just help improve them to make them less annoying. Honestly it really does seem sloppily done. There are good parts to it like the challenges, but i dont see how this isn't just as lazy as other collections. And i see no real reason to buy x legacy collection 2 since 2 of the 4 games are complete garbage while the other 2 are just average. I don't know, i liked the review but i just thought i'd say that.

@emmanuelmoses58516 жыл бұрын
yeah, they could've done those things, but people liked how things were made in X6 to give them a "challenge" but seriously, screw alia in x5, and you are right about the slowdown problem in X1-3.
@Darknight06816 жыл бұрын
I suspect what’s going on here is that X1-3 is running on some sort of emulator. Certain groupings of sound effects cut channels out of the music and there’s slowdown too even though some parts are faster than the original. Also seems to be some sort of v-sync/frameskip issue in places too. X4 feels like a port and aside from a sound or two that for some odd reason sounds higher pitched due to compression, looks and plays just right with no issues I’ve seen thus far.
@Darknight06816 жыл бұрын
Kyouma the X Collection back then was 6 ports, that’s why. Apparently X1-3 on here are emulations. And kinda rough ones in spots at that.

I got this collection recently and tried the CRT scanline filter for a while with the SNES games, it felt like a cute bit of nostalgia for a while but I ultimately switched back because I agree that there's not much point in pretending to play on a CRT when you could see the beautiful pixel perfect art on your HD TV. Fantastic collection either way and great review. I've fallen in love with this series all over again.
@shadowledastray2 жыл бұрын
I must say, I'm glad CRT filters are becoming more common for older games. On old TVs pixels were bright in the center and would bleed into the surrounding scanlines. Often games were designed with that in mind, allowing for a smooth blended effect or the illusion of more detail than is actually being displayed. On HD TVs pixels are perfectly contained squares, so they have to fill in blank scanlines with a duplicate of the previous line. Like a JPEG image thats missing every other row of pixels, if you copy-paste every line twice to replace the blank space, you end up with a very chunky picture.

Gunvolt To be fair, when we only ever knew about Classic Legacy 1, this was an honest argument. There was a weird time gap between Legacy 1+2, which made me think despite L1 running smoothly and having nice challenges they would just make a decent NES port collection and call it a day. By Legacy 2 existing and going from 1-6 to 1-10, my "BUT ANNIVERSARY" went away. And knowing from the get go we'd get X1-8 killed any "BUT X COLLECTION" I could possibly have. ...I wish I could have my PS1 X3 OST though, but beggars can't be choosers on that front, I'll take the music hit if I can have X1-8 on my Switch.

I understand what you are saying, but I find it to be a bit hyperbolic. 4 Mega Man Games got cancelled at around the same time, so it hasn’t been an era of cancellations. These 4 games got cancelled because of the diminishing returns the Mega Man series had in the 2000s with each series falling off the map in terms of recognition, not to mention the MM series practically competing with itself for dev time and marketing. But since all of that is in the past, imo we should give this new era of Mm a shot with open arms, but what your saying is understandable.

aBDKstan Obviously progressive mode (480p) on LCD will of course look BAD and have input lag like what J showed but... 480i on 4:3 ratio CRT with component cable and you get near-perfect experiance with the original x games 6 plus removal of slowdowns and first time for US players to play megaman x on RGB, i'm not disapointed by this collection because it's splited into 2, i'm disapointed because it doesn't improve the experiance as well that it's just a lazy emulation, *when i'm looking for collection i want the games to play better honestly, not extra stuff like art work, soundtrack or trailers that can be easily on the internet any time soon* again i'm getting collection 2 because 7 and 8, they look quite good and it's far better option instead of wasting tons of money on ps2 copies i love the megaman series and want to support it, but at the same time i don't want to support capcom and tell them thats all ok to keep releasing half-assed ports of their old titles Justin Stewart I don't think thats entirely true since majority would prefer something to look good on their modern display, Legacy collections are basically upscalling the original 480i resulotion, it doesn't make it look better, it just makes it more acceptable on your modern LCD *aside from obviously X7 and X8 since it's from SD into HD remasters conversions which is good*

Hey, J... I could use some advice, and I think you are the perfect person to ask this. :o See, I've always _only_ been used to the momentum-based Sonic series and more traditional Metroidvanias when it comes to 2D platformers. So I'm really having trouble getting into the Mega Man series because I can't get some proper "footing" to get used to the gameplay, I just get my ass kicked all the time. So - *_which Mega Man game would you suggest for someone like me to start with?_* Be it the original Mega Man series, the Mega Man X series, the Mega Man Zero series, just _whatever_ entry you think would be the best to get to know it and get used to it.

Chaos_Light_Dark His Complaints About The Japanese Voices Are Plain Dumb, He Should Get a Version Of X6 with the Team That Dubbed X4 on His Collection, He deserve It
@ChaosDarkLight6 жыл бұрын
His view that keeping it undubbed means they didn't bother to hire English dub actors and were "lazy", and the shoddy translation of the text that X6 English had probably reinforced that view. You're right that it's stupid, but it's not invalid. He didn't consider that 1) Japanese dubs exporting has a licensing cost too and 2) why would anyone especially in the 21st century want a Japanese game remove its voice acting? That's like forcing crunchyroll to remove their subbed options because a dub *can* exist. X7 was dual audio too actually, X8 and CM and MHX sadly were not.

This was great as I hadn't played any X games beyond the first one (in a way that mattered. I had the collection on GameCube as a kid and never got past the intro stages). My ranking from worst to best: -X6 / X7 (never bothered). -X8 (by no means a bad game, but being an obsessive completionist really spoiled it. So many ways to easily screw yourself out of collectibles, and many of them are hidden at the ends of levels. It turned the backtracking I was normally fine with into an absolute chore. Also, Blaze Heatnix, Optic Sunflower, and Bamboo Pandamonium can go die in a fire. -X1 (Already played it, and I'm annoyed by the fact that the game basically forces you to do Chill Penguin first unless you want the experience to be miserable without the dash. Also, Sigma stage one without save states can kiss my ass. Seriously, if there was ever a level where Rookie Hunter should have activated pit saving, it's there). -X3 (fun, but Zero being useless is dissapointing, the backtracking, while not on the same level as X8, is a bit much, and the game really screws you out of the Zero Saber without warning. I'd say the same for the Golden Armor if I didn't come in knowing about that one). -X2 (fine I guess, but some collectables were just a complete pain in the ass, and passwords really hated me during the Sigma stages for some reason). -X4 (probably the objective best, but it's for some reason tied with #1). -X5 (underrated as hell. Maybe because I got one of the good endings and didn't have to get fucked over by RNG, or maybe because I played Rookie Hunter mode to avoid the bullshit, but damn was it fun. Sure the fucking whale can chortle my ass, but the majority of it was fun as hell.

You mentioned the poor integer scaling for the SNES games, there's an option for proper scaling. You briefly covered it and complained it doesn't reach the top and bottom of the screen but that's because 1080p is 4.5x 240p. The closest integer scale is 4x resulting in an image that's perfectly scaled but 960 pixels tall, hence having empty space at the top and bottom.

My personal issue with X Legacy Collection is that I See no reason at ALL to split the games into two collections. IF at least they had tried to bring us a better enhanced version of Megaman X3 for PS1, (that was a good port with better music but with Less than desireable input lag) I would like, agree with it. If they had added like, a option to switch between dubs on X7 and X4 it would make me way happier. And here's my problems: X3 PS1 version HAD a PC port. They could have done that if they didn't want to emulate a PS1. X7 on PC IS possible to switch between dubs (And I know it's an unoficial port, but it works nonetheless) and of course, X8 on PC HAD a choice to switch between voice action. WITHOUT forcing me to have a ton of dialogs without understanding nothing at all. That situation where you can play both versions of the game (JP/EN) is better implemented when they add an option to change only one thing or both (for voice and language). That being said I'm a fan of Megmaman games and I've got MMX LC2, but yeah. I wish Capcom did a little more effort on those. Specially when both Extras on them are the exact same not so good with poorly design battle system with two bosses.

I was thinking of getting this given how I thought the Legacy Collections for Classic Megaman were good. And I would say if I ever get the chance I might just do that. :) On a side note: I think the CRT mode is just more for authenticity like what Sonic Mania did. Which I think is a neat bonus imo. Anyways, great review J! :) (Just curious btw. Even though the 2nd Legacy collection for X has X5, should I bother with that collection? :/)

Super Gamer61499 If I might make a suggestion, when playing X6 I would highly recommend using the Black Armor Zero Code, or the Ultimate Armor X code depending on which character you prefer to use. X6 can be very aggravating when it comes to the overall stage designs, or nightmare system gimmicks and those armors help a lot in making X6's bullshit more tolerable without making the game too easy the way that rookie mode seems to do. It's still not a perfect solution to the issues that the game has, but for me at least it was a major improvement. Also using those armors doesn't even lock you out of getting any achievements if you care about that sort of thing. There are actually two specific achievements that can only be obtained with Black Armor Zero and Ultimate Armor X.

Yes. I do use scaline filters for CRT-like feel. They do an okay job of approximating scanlines. And, since the art was designed to be seen with scanlines, it often looks at least a little better. Obviously custom scaline filters in 3rd party emulation are better, and using a real CRT is light years better. But sometimes the filters are alright. The other shitty filters can go die in a hole. But scanlines I sometimes find nice.

J's review I have a question . In the Megaman x collection is all the music from each game there or just select tracks because megaman x 4 sound track alone has 42 songs. The reason I ask is because on Steam the x collection has dlc for the sound tracks of all the megaman games and I have not seen any dlc on the playstation store for these sound tracks.

Great review man!!! I was waiting for this after I bought my Legacy Collection for PS4!!! I agree with you on the expectations of having things changed in regards to X6 and X7. Lol, I have to admit, I was hoping they would've at the very least fixed all the English translation/text issues and typos in X6, but you're right that that was already expecting too much. In terms of X7, I wasn't holding my breath on anything being fixed, BUT I have to say I was glad that they gave us the option to change the fucking horrid english dubbing to the original Japanese audio, which made the cutscenes SO MUCH MORE tolerable in this game! The same problems with X6 and X7 were still there overall, but I have to say that I still believe X7 was the worst because of the 3-D aspect, the way the characters sluggishly move, and the fact that you couldn't manually change the camera angle (unless you can and I missed that). During my recent play-through of X7, the camera angle point still pissed me off royally, the Boss fight against Red was completely infuriating as all hell. It took me over an hour just to beat him and I almost felt like quitting after I won because I was so exhausted from rage! Also, Flame Hyenard was the other infuriating Boss fight in this game, ugh just thinking about those 2 Boss fights makes me annoyed, lol! I'm extremely glad they discarded the 3-D in X8 and brought it back to 2-D. Overall, I'm also extremely thrilled to have this HD Collection on PS4 because it is such a great series!!! I still geek out when I play them, especially X-X3 because I played on SNES when I was a kid way back in the day. Capcom did the fans a great service and tribute by bringing this to the PS4.

You might be better off playing the Japanese version instead. The voice acting there is much better and not irritating at all in my opinion. In fact, some of the voices from that version of Mega Man X4 are reused in both X5 and X6. Otherwise, I'm afraid that will not happen. Just get use to it even if you don't like the Japanese voices.

Have you tried 20XX? It looks like a love letter to the X series but using procedural level design and a points system to buy upgrades between runs. As you said in your review of Maverick Hunter X it's kind of disappointing that they never updated the games like they had in mind for potential sequels to MHX and 20XX looks like it could be gameplay wise based on such a concept. However the procedural generation means it will never have the classic level design and secrets that encourage you to learn it inside and out in exchange for potentially endless variations. I've asked on reddit and searched on Google but I can't find any opinions on how it compares to the Legacy collection. If you could offer any insight on the matter I would greatly appreciate it as I don't want to buy what ends up being an inferior clone when I could just get a faithful recreation. I'd be quite interested in a review of it if you ever play it or have done so already.
@CommanderWilliams6 жыл бұрын
Really respect how quickly you put this out, but I disagree with your conclusion. You spent a good part of the video saying how lazy pretty much every part of it was. What exactly was Capcom "hard at work" doing, if they couldn't even be bothered to fix the broken English text in X6? It sounds like it is graphically inferior to emulators as well, so I have to wonder where the value is for anyone who already owns the games in one form or another. I think I'll be waiting to see it the Rom hacks for 3, 5, and 6 get ported into this collection before I buy. Buymt seeing as how the classic legacy collections never got any kind of mod at all...I don't know if that will happen.
@misaeltoral5086 жыл бұрын
Florence Ledger The value is pretty much only for the Switch version, which is hilariously messed up with the half physical, half digital garbage. The fact that one can play these games on the go is a big plus and a reason to get them, I myself ordered both physical Switch collections from Japan and will be getting the US PS4 version. But you can pretty much guess which is the more valuable acquisition.

@CommanderWilliams6 жыл бұрын
aBDKstan I mean, they don't HAVE to do anything. I also don't have a buy no effort ports of games I can get elsewhere for $40. I would just have preferred they put in some effort, make it worth buying, and then I'd be happy to buy it. No offense, but you attitude of "just buy it" is exactly why Capcom in particular is happy to give us bare bones games because people will "just buy it" and call everyone else entitled. Also, no one is asking them to change assets. Just do some basic research on what players did and did not like about the game, and add some toggle options lik e turning off Alia in X5. Instantly a better game.
@Darknight06816 жыл бұрын
Considering that X4 and on are actual ports, they could’ve done a lot of things at least with those that they didn’t. But at least they play smooth, look and largely sound the part. So far in my experience, X1-3 are the ones with some issues I wasn’t expecting to see. Particularly, why those games were seemingly emulated instead of ported like the rest of the collection and like MM Legacy Collection 2. Where are those games save features? The gallery that lets you fight individual bosses at your leisure? The option to turn off and on slowdown? And why can’t Capcom seemingly get the pixel ratio to their collections clean while Digital Eclipses titles look clear and pretty with no visible pixel shimmering from some of the pixels being odd lengths?

I like the collection, but there is one MAJOR grip I have with this game and one very important detail you fergot to mention on this review, and that is unlike the Mega Man Legacy Collection duo, The Mega Man X Legacy Collection duo has no save slots, and that really bugged me. I remember playing X1 and got to the first part of Sigma Fortress after getting the special weapon, I beated the spider boss and desited to call another day and play another game, so I saved the game to play again, the next day I desited to play this game, and not only did I lose the special ability, but I stated back at the first Sigma stage, I was so confused and was all like "What the heck? I thought for shore that I saved!" and this happen on my second playthough I was getting annoyed by this. So it was then that I desited to test it, I got the weapon and defeated the spider boss again, then saved, quit the game and then returned to it, I lost the ability and I start back at the first Sigma Stage, so this means that you HAVE to both get the special weapon and beat ALL the Sigma Stage and beated all of the Maverick boss in one go, and that REALLY ticked me off so much. I still enjoy the collection, but I really wished that they implemented save slots for this collection.

I definitely agree that Rookie Hunter Mode neutered the games to monotony. It wasn’t terrible in X1, and I found X2 pretty playable without it, but X3 was a damned if you do, damned if you don’t scenario for me. It was too hard in a first playthrough for me normally, but became a cake walk if I toggled on RHM. Also, I didn’t like how in X4 onward it made bottomless pits not matter at all. I only used it on X7 in the second collection, before knowing I could change the difficulty, and it made the Red and Space Sigma fights a little too easy. Falling off the stage meant nothing, so cheap attacks had no consequence. I really wish they had the player take some damage in RHM from pits and spikes, so that while there’s no insta-death, there’s still consequence from falling into them, and still a risk of dying from them. It really made any games they were used on laughably easy.
