Picking a direction is a tough one, if it were mine I’d probably go a more traditional route. I like a flathead but a Y Block or old school hemi would be cool too. (Just no small block Chevy that’s super lame) I think one of the smartest things you could do is go with an aftermarket complete chassis kit. Not only do you save a lot of time it’s safer with its modern components/materials plus your suspension geometry is all figured out and it’s a proven concept. At the end of the day it’s probably cheaper as well. With your following it wouldn’t surprise me if contacted Speedway Motors you could get some kind of partnership with them. They have everything you to build one of those.

I vote for a 4-cyl motor, maybe a Pinto motor but it could be interesting to use a later Japanese motor from an 80s Datsun or even a Honda. It seems too radical, but remember the early rodders wanted an Offenhauser engine with all the hi-tech features--if they had a modern Honda engine they'd be using that for sure. Use a junkyard T5 trans, banjo rear end please!

If you're going to replace the canvas roof what you do is to fix the canvas and secure the edges. Then you totally soak the canvas with water and paint the canvas with mineral based lacquer while it's still wet. Once the paint and the canvas has dried, it will have shrunk to a tight fit. It's the way the old railway carriages were done as well a lot of old wooden boats. Just FYI

Any color you want as long as it’s black only applies to the really old model T’s. This was due to the black paint would dry faster and it held up better. A few years into production paint technology advanced enough that they were offered in quite a few different colors. Red is completely possible as an original color. I learned this when I went to the Henry Ford museum myself standing right next to the 15 millionth model T, there was an employee there giving information about it. He was also explaining how stuff worked using the cut away in the same building.
