I live in the UK and played cricket as a kid. When I was an adult I was captain of a softball team. I became used to catching with the glove where I tended to move my hand towards the ball so that the glove closed around the ball. The next time I 'played catch' with a cricket ball I did the same motion with my bare hand. It really stung my hand causing me to drop the ball on top of my bare foot. The next day I had a large perfectly round bruise in the palm of my hand and another one on top of my foot. Catching a cricket ball with bare hands is a skill in itself and the guys who catch it at close-range to the batter have my utmost respect.

I have broken a few fingers playing cricket as a kid. I didn't get to play much in school as I was a girl, and it was classed as a boys sport at high school, but I still loved playing when I got the chance

So, baseball fans are all like, "Whoa, those cricket catches are insane!" 'Cause, you know, barehand grabs in their fave sport are like finding a needle in a haystack. Little do they know, the cricket ball is 10 times harder than the baseball they're used to.

Cricket is as much cerebral as physical. Without good strategy, a game can be lost, regardless of how physically skilled the opposition is. The best games are those with a blend of both.

Clearly had little to do with baseball. If you were as observant and knew as much about baseball you would be appreciating what baseball has been giving to cricket since at least 110 years ago. So many skills and techniques have been adopted into cricket. Learn about Victor Trumper and whan he advised to aspiring cricketers like your sons and his mate Monty (M.A.) Noble both of whom have SCG Stands named after them. I could go on and on but learn about both sports and not denigrate what is an equally great sport. Take your boys to an International cricket game about an hour early and observe how the players are warming up and how they are using baseball gloves.

G'day Mate! A thing to remember is that after football(soccer) cricket is the most watched/followed sport in the world! That thing with the fielders leaping and tossing the ball back in to the field of play... well if the ball clears the boundary it is auto]matically 6 runs and if the fielder catches it but lands outside of the boundary it is still 6 runs but if he can catch it in the air and toss the ball back infield then it is only the number of runs the batters can actually run uaually 2 or 3 only...Welcome to the cricket rabbit hole!!!!

You have to be within the field of play to catch someone out - if you catch it when you're over the boundary and your feet are touching the ground, it's six runs. Some of next year's T20 cricket world cup will be held in the US, so hopefully some of it will be televised where you are!

That rope is called the boundary. When the ball gets hit and crosses the boundary on the ground it scores 4 runs for the batting team. When the ball is struck over the boundary in the air it scores 6 runs. That's why you see the fielders hitting the ball back inside the boundary. Your feet must land inside the boundary if you catch the ball. I've seen fielders hit the ball back inside the boundary while off the ground, land outside the boundary and then step back inside and catch the ball before it hits the ground. Pretty cool to see. Love these vids 👍🏾

It's called Major League Cricket, a T20 franchise similar to India's IPL. The teams are Seattle Orcas, San Francisco Unicorns, LA Knight Riders, Texas Super Kings, MI New York and Washington(DC) Freedom. Some of those appear to be connected to IPL teams or share ownership, if the team names are anything to go by, eg. Chennai Super Kings, Kolkatta Knight Riders, and Mumbai Indians(MI) are all IPL teams.

Going to watch a cricket match is a full day out. Plan accordingly. You need coffee and Danish pastries for mid-morning, a selection of pies, ham, cold sausages or similar plus individual puddings for lunch, sandwiches and cakes for afternoon tea. These are planned breaks in the match when the players will also leave the field for their refreshments served in the pavilion. Don’t forget bags of sweets, biscuits, chocolate bars and crisps in case you need a snack. You need waterproofs and an umbrella if the forecast is at all dodgy, and factor 50 sun cream for your nose if it’s good. Be prepared to have low-level bets with the people around you (probably total strangers) on things like what time the first wicket fell, what was the score when the first wicket fell, runs total at teatime, what the final runs score will be, and anything else you can think of. Finally, if it’s a Test Match (an international fixture) a good little radio is a great extra so you can listen to the BBC commentary on the match you’re sat there watching. I LOVE CRICKET!!!❤

If the ball lands outside the boundary without touching the ground on the way, the batting team get 6 runs added to their score. If the ball is hit along the ground before crossing the boundary, the batting team get 4 runs added to their score. The fielding team (when jumping and slapping it back in bounds) are trying to stop the ball hitting the ground outside of the boundary, then the batting team only get the number of runs (both batsman running end to end between the 2 sets of stumps) they were able to complete.

I played cricket for most of my life, and I can assure you, if you ever play against professional players... you barely see the ball before it comes at you, you also have to anticipate how the ball is going to move and bounce long before it has released the bowlers hand. Also, the ball HURTS SO MUCH if you get hit, its basically like a rock.

Cricket is an intriguing game with even a more intriguing history. Here are some fun facts: The over arm delivery was invented for women as they had to wear full dress of the 1800s, and it was impossible to bowl underarm. The first full international game of cricket was played between.....USA and Canada. The oldest sporting rivalry (of any sport, not just cricket), is played between England and Australia, with the first test being played in 1877. The testmatches played between England & Australia are called the Ashes. When Australia had its first ever win against England, some English women got the bails (the horizontal component of the wickets) and cremated them, and placed them into a tiny earn. This was to signify the death of English cricket as it had been defeated by a colony! The earn is kept at the Marylebone Cricket Club.

The last 'overstep' is virtually impossible unless deliberate for 'spot betting' purposes. People in the know will bet large sums on a 'no ball', a 'wide', etc off a particular ball. The bowler would have been bribed by bookies to do it. It happened in an international game in England against Pakistan in 2010. After investigations, three of the Pakistan team and a bookmaker were sent to prison and banned from the game. The odd incident at 4:40 was the batsman being given out "obstructing the field". He positioned himself to stop stop the fielder from getting to the ball to try to run out the other batsman. It is a rare offence and, of course, you are not allowed to do that.

The reason he knocked it back in was to stop it touching the ground outside the boundary which would mean it would be a six. If it doesn't touch the boundary which would be four runs (known simply as a four) and it doesn't touch the ground outside the boundary which would be six runs (known simply as a six), then they only get as many runs in before he can return it which is usually two, at most three from the longest distance. Usually the fence is the boundary but on some fields the fence is beyond the distance for the standardised boundary, so they have a makeshift one. They needed fifty nine runs to win, with only twenty four balls remaining. By stopping it from going for a four or a six, it makes it more difficult to get the score required. If you step past the crease when bowling, which is the line that you bowl behind, then it is a no ball. Which can result in a free run being awarded or a free run and a free hit, which means the batsman can't be given out except by a run out. The reason it is sometimes viewed as tampering is because it means you deny the other team the ability to get their run tally up fair and square and can cost teams the game. Australia had some controversy with that many years ago because the pace bowlers were running in so fast they'd overshoot the crease in their attempts to deliver faster and faster bowls.

Over the line is a six if it bounces inside its a four so they try to knock it back in if you catch it outside the line it is not out and is a six as long as your feet do not touch the ground outside you can throw it up and back in then come back inside to take the catch.

I don’t watch cricket but I do know if they hit the ball out of that radius they get an instant 6 runs so I think they were hitting the ball back in instead of risking dropping the catch and giving them 6 runs

The Miller catch wasn't a catch. The ball touched the ground before he had full control of his body.

The Barmy Army vids are good. They are English and follow the big international games. They are the cricket equivalent of football chants. I like test cricket which is played over a maximum of 5 days and between 3 and 5 matches- the Ashes is played every yr between England and Australia. There used to be a lot of "sledging" taking the mick out of each other, not so much now. Test cricket is a chess game, but can change in a minute. I don't understand all the fielder positions and all of the rules, but I think you don't have to. Who cares where 3rd slip or cow corner is?! 😄

start by watching Asia cup in june 2024, the play ODI (50 over). you will understand all the basic rules in 3 matches at max. Then if you like it, and want to learn the sport. watch the test format, its the best format. you will understand the technique of the batsman and bowlers, the positions the fielders are standing in etc. Watch international matches they are better. nations which are good at the sport-----> Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, West indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan (no particular order). My favorite player is Kane Williams, other good current players are Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Rohit Sharma, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Jasprith Bumrah, Steve Smith, Rehmath Shah, Babar Azam, Naseem Shah, Rachin Ravindra. I respect how you are modestly trying and taking an interest in something out of your culture 👏👏. And i would be grateful, if I can do anything to keep your interest alive

Cricket is only really a big sport in England, although the other nations of the UK do have teams they're not a traditionally a national sport. As Frankie Boyle once said "Cricket in Scotland is practiced as a homosexual martial art".😂

Cricket is like rugby watched by rival fans sitting next to each other, drinking a few beers & having a laugh. That doesn't happen in football! Plus, the cricket ball can land ten feet in front of you & hit you from your toes to your head, all at speeds between 50mph & 100mph! No square-box pitching zone like in baseball, cricket's brilliant! 🏏
