This sure brings back memories. I put a lot of hours on our 4166. It was our main tractor. I loved it because it was our first 4 wheel drive so it meant no more using the brakes to turn. We had a couple of them. The IH tractors don't have crab steer like the Case tractors. The lever for 2 or 4 wheel steer is supposed to lock the rear wheels straight in 2 wheel steer. 4 steer just allows for a tighter turn radius as both axles are steering.

We had a 1979 4186 and we traded it on a 1973 Turd Ferguson b/c it needed new shoes and even back in 95 those fatties weren’t cheap. We could pull a lot more with Turd but Dad always regretted not keeping the 4186. As mentioned here, baby the steering. I kept it in two wheel steer most of the time b/c if you backed up with it in 4-wheel steer while in 4-wheel drive you were gonna sheer some pins. That being said it would not make a good grain cart puller which is what a lot of guys are using the old 4-wheelers for. What it is great at is straight up working ground. The fatties make it float and barely leaves a footprint. A 20 ft. Land Plane or a 22ft harrow-gator or cultimulcher would be real nice behind it. The 436 just showed you how lovey dovey it is. I ran a 4 shank blue jet ripper with it like a dream. If you use a guidance system you can make perfect lands and keep it in two wheel steer.

Thanks for the tips! Sounds like two wheel steer is the way to go for most of what I’d be doing with this rig.

I have not run the IH version but I have ran the Case rigid frame version. Personally I love them as much as the articulated tractors I have. Only thing I will say if the steering is setup like a Case remember the steering can have a mind of it'd own and change directions on its own. I know a guy that bought a Case and less than a month traded it in on new John Deere 8960. The case scared him when he was driving it down the road and it took a sudden turn for the ditch. I never experienced the issue on the 2670 I ran but i know others who have.
@CoreyBrasher Жыл бұрын
That would usually be due to a bad steering sensor on the axle ends or the wiring in between. It would misread the angle and try to correct it... incorrectly.... Dad had to replace one on the 4690 IIRC.

One thing I will say is that Rockwell axle parts for that era are pretty hard to find. Granted those are steerable, but I’d say a lot of parts interchange. The Steiger guys with series 1s are learning that the hard way
@jtsbarnngrill6873 Жыл бұрын
Hopefully these won’t give me any trouble

Steiger use Hungarian RABA axles - at least Series III machines do. Not sure about prior and later series though.
@jamesbarbour8400 Жыл бұрын
I thought that these tractors used Clark axles ? I believe that early Case rigid frame, 4 way steers used Clarks also, as did the John Deere 8010/8020 articulated tractors from the 1960s.
@nellsonstout700111 ай бұрын
@@jamesbarbour8400 I did my homework on this stuff. I don’t comment without knowing what I’m talking about. The 4100 series IH until and including the 4166, and maybe the 4186 used Rockwell, 1200 and 1470 Case used Rockwell, then Case switched to their own axle. John Deere 8020s had Clark. Look at the bolt patterns and the hubs. And I said series 1 Steigers. That changed pretty quick once they found out that the Rockwells sucked.
@jamesbarbour840011 ай бұрын
@@nellsonstout7001 are you suggesting that I've posted a comment indicating that I don't know what I'm talking about ? For your information, I too do my homework, and indeed have been in touch with the owner of AMTRAC ( a contraction of American Tractor - the owner dealt exclusively with Stiegers tractors), in the North of England. He kindly supplied me with a detailed history of the axles that Steiger used, from year dot till they went bankrupt around the mid 80s. I was also kindly offered several old engineering drawings of the specific axles as used on the Steiger Panther Series III tractor, by a contact I have within the RABA organisation, in Hungary, Europe. I have recently found out that badge engineered Ford FWs were equipped with Steigers' own 'S34' Single Outboard Reduction axles, to presumeably keep production costs down for a competitor. Furthermore, I have a book by Lee Klancher, an author, published by Octane Press which covers all of IHs' forays into large four wheel drive tractor production, whether they be four wheel steer or articulated. Every chapter of said book is written by relevant people involved with the specific tractors under scrutiny, since they worked for IH in various capacities, and weren't just some enthusiasts who pretended to know more than they actually did. Where the IH and Case Traction King tractors are concerned, I may have gotten my Clark and Rockwell axle units mixed up, but can state with confidence that the John Deere 8010/8020 early articulated tractors definitely did use Clark axles. I have a Parts Manual for that tractor, and it's in there.
