You’re definitely no idiot. Speak only positively about yourself. You’re a nice guy that is giving it your best, and that’s what counts! You are probably correct on thinking that it wasn’t properly adjusted originally, or they road the clutch in the past. I’ve noticed in some farm videos where guys will drop a ripper or chisel all the way down and let out off the clutch and it makes me cringe. I personally never touch the clutch while the implements in the ground unless it’s an emergency. I make sure the tractor is rolling and is near proper rpm before I set the tool down, and I raise it up and throttle down before clutching. Clutching in full pull mode is a sure fire way to smoke any clutch. I don’t think the average person realizes how much heat is created when the clutch is improperly used or out of adjustment and how much it shortens its life.

If that setup is just like a typical semi, I would also replace the clutch brake thats on the input shaft of the trans. I always check the input for wear along with excessive play on the input shaft bearing in the trans as well. For adjusting the clutches i use a really long 5/16" bolt 6 or 7" long and stick it between the throwout bearing and the clutch break to set the adjustment on the clutch. But most times when installing a clutch on a freshly ground flywheel, it will end up being pretty close but not always. I use a prybar or a prop rod to hold the pedal down when adjusting the clutch. Just sucks to have to get out to release the clutch pedal lol. Depending on what you want to spend there is a self adjusting clutch setup out there that you could install and never have to worry about adjusting it yourself again until the clutch wears out but they're most expensive.

As an ASE certified master medium/heavy duty truck technician, I approve this message... now... that flywheel needs turning its been heated the metal has turned blue... now if you putting that regular clutch back in you will need a second person or a something to hold the clutch pedal down while setting the free play on that clutch if you dont put in the Eaton Easy pedal self adjuster

@Farmer1277
@Farmer1277 10 ай бұрын
@ohiofarmer1 there is. Some semis can come with them from the factory or you can install one. Most don't because they won't last as long as a manually adjusted clutch plus they cost more as well. For a tractor I'd probably put an auto adjusting one in for the set it and forget it thing lol.
@jtsbarnngrill6873
@jtsbarnngrill6873 10 ай бұрын
Very good points. The flywheel is headed to a shop that assured me it would be machined to specs, they’ve done a few for me in the past. The self adjustable clutch would be much easier here because the access hole is directly over the front differential, hard to get it right

@@ohiofarmer1 eaton easy pedal plus.... they are truck clutches... they are easier to setup... and easier to push down... they self adjust to a point... also he needs to install a new clutch brake as well as reinstall his grease tube to the new throwout bearing when he puts it in... any of them clutches will cost about 1k to 1.5k... Id get mone from a truck repair parts place that sells volumes of parts like Fleetpride, or even TRP but maybe even check around to some of the big dealer chains like Rush Truck centers they can usually find him one cheapest

@@jtsbarnngrill6873 good deal I wasnt the only one to see the blue in the metal there from heat... no use in playing around... you can sometimes get a cheaper reman pressure plate clutch set it will save you money over new... but a new Eaton easy pedal plus would mean you shouldnt have to crawl back under to set the clutch... they make a tool for doing that just dont think it would be easy to do with that differential right there...

When the flywheel has a bolt pattern that only allows it to mount in one position, it’s an externally balanced engine? When a neighbor started running a Versatile in the 80’s, they’d commented that Versatile recommended the proper working gear was what the tractor would pull at an idle with the implement in the ground and working speed was WOT. That saved clutch wear because you’d never use your clutch for turns…. Their engines didn’t need higher rpm like the JD did.

@jtsbarnngrill6873

I seriously considered that, but I don’t think it would have been much easier. The front of the trans is supported by the bell housing, so I’d have to figure that out, radiator, exhaust, hydraulic pump, something to lift the motor high enough to get it out,ect. I did a lot of on line research on it and almost everyone did it via dropping the trans so I just went that route. Seemed like the smoother way to go

Make sure there is good flow to the carb also. If there’s gunk in the tank it can restrict flow also causing that to happen

You should invest into magnetic trades for your nuts and bolts they're cheap at Harbor Freight and I'll tell you what they are lifesaver you can hang them up sideways whatever and it doesn't matter in magnetizes both ways so you can't even knock your bolts over to knock them out of there they are a lifesaver

19:19 If they machined only the friction surface while not addressing the pressure plate surface height.... well there's your problem. I'd like to assume a person working on a muli-disk clutch system would be aware enough to verify that. But we all know better.

7:59 Stop! This is where you go lop the heads off one or two 3-6" long bolts. Trust me... you will need them when going back together anyway. Oh and make another set for your fly wheel. That's the bastard that want's to take fingers and toes off.
