This was the finale of 2 concerts 5/5/91 for Carnegie's 100 anniversary. Much of the concerts are also on KZbin. Both concerts were the NYP with conducting shared by Mehta & Levine. It was supposed to be Mehta & Bernstein but as Bernstein died the fall of 90 they got Levine. Zubin made a speech dedicating this performance to Lenny. It was the end of a very long day & never to be forgotten.

Great job Al! Thanks for the clarification of the date of the concert. I hope all is well!

This is a monumental achievement. At first I felt it slow, but Mehta is totally convincing. Maintaining perfect phrasing we are swept away heading to peaks holding commanding and ecstatic views until we arrive at the triumphant finale. Tenndstedt gets there... but I'm surprised that Mehta impressed me so much. I have always admired and loved his ravishing performance of Puccini's "Girl of the Golden West" and his Munich Tristan but with these in mind, not so surprised he had this in him also.

One of the most beautiful pieces of orchestration !! The whole symphony 3 has been one of my favorites for 40 years.

Agreed. In my opinion, this symphony is Mahler's best composition. R.I.P. Thanks for sharing!

ZM always did a great Mahler 3. His LA PHIL recording set a very high bar. Thanks for sharing 👍

The Phil's are fantastic in this performance (Smith and Meyers)!

Mehta has a wonderful last movement of this with LA Phil from 1980s

If am not mistaken its from earlier not the 80s. He joined the NYPO in 1978. Still, its a lovely performance though `only' analogue.

I find this guy quite superfluous and overrated.
@sivakumarvakkalanka49385 ай бұрын
If anything he is underrated and doesnt get enough credit. Every single cliche " flashy, superficial" etc. has been unfairly used. Has an astonishingly wide repertoire and has done a lot for contemporary music.
@sivakumarvakkalanka49385 ай бұрын
Having said that, i assume you meant Mehta and not Mahler :) :) though, why not?
@olyaddewo23794 ай бұрын
Maybe sometimes superfluous but not overrated in anyway.
