This is classic hard bop. Less complex and florid than bop, but still taking advantage of the new harmonic vocabulary bop opened up. More bluesy and soulful (gospel influences were common), harder swinging, more broadly appealing to casual listeners. It was often also called "straightahead," and it's still a classic small-combo jazz sound. If someone wants me to introduce them to jazz, I'll play the Miles Live at the Blackhawk album, it's a perfect example of what made hard bop a great sound.

I met Mr. Cannonball Adderly in San Francisco in 1974, my dopey rock band played on the same bill at a festival. I got to talk to him a while-a wonderful, friendly positive man. I love his playing-you can tell he means every note. Even though he had tremendous technique, it never got in the way of his soulful approach.

This is the awesome tune that created beautiful common ground where 1950s jazz, Chicago blues, and hard rock could all meet in passionate friendship. And KZbin, Cannonball was the greatest sax player of all time.

He swings so hard! At the end of his solo, Cannonball is so pumped that he pulls his hands back as if the the sax is hot. He plays with so much joy, one cannot help but like what he is playing.

This is truly one of the greatest performances ever on live TV. Everyone is outrageously great. I have to point out Nat's solo. If you can't feel how HOT it is, then you are dead. It literately brings tears to my eyes and I get high from it. You can't play better than that. This band was amazing !!!

well, as I understand it, and I'm no musicologist, but bebop tended to be faster and existed mainly in small-band jazz of the 1940s & early 50s. by the mid 50s (and this video is from either late 50s or very early 60s) the tempos got a bit slower and the sound was evolving, both in harmonic structure (think coltrane, monk, mingus or eric dolphy's explorations in this time period) and also style influences (rhythm & blues, latin & brasilian music etc). at least - that's how I view it.

I'm tellin' ya... this song is it. I hate to admit it, but I didn't realize how good Cannonball plays this song until I heard other people play it (including the incomparable Milt Jackson). No one (and I mean no one) plays this like Cannonball, Nat and Zawinul. They have a snap (like the snap in chain-gang song) that no one else has mastered. Yeah, this is a a badass song by some badass musicians.

If you're still not convinced that's Zawinul, check out Cannonball Adderley Sextet - Jazz Stars 1963, from German TV. Same band. And at 6:30 Cannonball introduces Joe. Plus his name is there--in B&W--w/the rest of the band, on the wall of the studio set, right behind Louis Hayes!

The pianist looks like Victor Feldman (who was with the Quintet for a while), not Joe Zawinul. Google their images and see if you don't agree.
@ValentinZopp9 жыл бұрын
pianopappy for sure this isn't Joe
@iggypopsicle25049 жыл бұрын
pianopappy Nope, definitely Zawinul. Zawinul's nose hooked distinctively to the left, whereas Feldman's was straight. Feldman also had a bit more hair and a rounder face. Plus, there are videos of Zawinul playing his own compositions with the Quintet around this same time period, and this is clearly the same guy.

I think that involving the audience with his music and speaking a lot about it contributed to his reputation, like he did on that well known recording of "Mercy, mercy, mercy." And tromboneGuy, you're right about Nat, heck-He wrote this famous tune. You could say the same about Bud Powell for example, often overlooked for no real reasons.

Stit had his own way of appraoching the music, and he happened to sound like Parker when he played alto. I don't know much about Crisis, but I'll check him out. Jackie Mclean has always had his own sound even though he subbed for Bird. I never said Bird was the most important, I said that he laid a foundation for everyone. Bird, Dizzy, and Monk laid a foundation for everyone who came after them.

Bird is Bird, and Cannonball is Cannonball. Cannonball is definitely a bebop stylist, but he has an energy (vibe) that is different from Bird's. There is also a video on youtube in which Cannonball names Bird has his great influence.
