The late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia provides a powerful warning to society about the nature of evil and the mistaken assumptions we can have about it.

A year ago, I would have said my country (US) was very far from becoming anything like Germany in the 1930s... But I think now it is very clear to everyone that the potential is always there, and the "civilization" is just a cover for the animalistic hatred that infects so many. I'm 46 now. And I can honestly say that I will never feel the same about my country and fellow Americans as I did the first 46 years of my life. I will never trust the same again. I will never forget. And I'll make sure my children will not be as naive as I was to believe Jews would ever be treated as equals in a non-Jewish country.

Current events only confirm that the Western civilization, despite technological advances, always remained saturated with Jew-hatred and was culture of bloodthirsty beasts. The most indeed overlooked aspect of Holocaust is total absence of threat and hostility on the part of Jews toward perpetrators. Many of exterminated Jews lived in countries not having even border with germany. Dure to thsi fact, Holocaust is unique massive slaughter in human history. In all other the extermination there was a result of struggle for common or adjacent territory (Rwanda), for influence, for support slaughtered population provided to enemies of mass murderers (Armenia). That was never the case in one only massive total slaughter - Holocaust. Strangely, most if any Holocaust scholars fail to notice this significant aspect.

In the 19th century, Germany jettisoned its biblical foundations and moral / ethical standards in exchange for existential philosophy which questioned reality itself while exalting a psuedo intellectualism and moral relativism to insane extremes. As a consequence, Germany's culture became extremely decadent in the 1920's, flaunting sexual vice and perversion of every kind, including transgenderism. When the Great Depression hit Europe in 1929, it was much worse in Germany due to the hardship the Versaille Treaty of 1918 had already imposed upon the country. As the depression worsened, Germans became desperate for answers but because they had so lost their moral compass from decades of humanistic philosophy, they either tolerated or fully endorsed the Nazis when they came to power. They were seduced by Hitler's stoking of their bitterness and grievance towards to the Versaille treaty as well as German pride and nationalism. They were either unwilling or INCAPABLE of seeing through the facade to the very dark and evil underbelly of what Hitler and the Nazi's were selling. Very few spoke out against the immoral monstrosity that was Nazi ideology which resulted in one of the greatest tragedies of the 20th century. Over the past 50 yrs, modern Liberals have repeatedly accused political Conservatives and Christians of being "Nazis" when in fact, the Nazis were socialists and far more pre Christian German pagan in their religious beliefs than anything else. The radical Left has FAR more in common with Nazi pagan ideals and beliefs as well as with fascism despite Mussolini and Hitler's best efforts to cleanse fascism of its marxist roots. It's why I do not believe that Nazism was "far right" but rather "far left" in the same demonic cauldron as communism. It rejected the great truth the founding fathers of the United States held as self evident; "that ALL men are created equal and endowed by their creator with unalienable rights".

"They Thought They Were Free: 1933-45": I would suggest immediate and mandatory reading before this November election of Milton Mayer's "They Thought They Were Free: 1933-45." Written in 1955, 'They Thought They Were Free' is a non-fictional description of the thought processes of everyday ordinary Germans during Nazi Germany. August Heckscher, the chief writer of editorials of the New York Herald Tribune, wrote that the book "suggests how easy it is for human beings in any society to fall prey to a dynamic political movement, provided their lives are sufficiently insecure, frustrated or empty." He stated that the book is simultaneously a discussion on ethics, on "how political tyranny is established", and on issues in Germany and the "German mentality".

Remember the Torah "Our Wisdom among the nations". You are wrong in opposing intelligence and morality, because you do not realize that there are two stages of "intelligence", 1) the cleverness and2) the real wisdom. You find the same distinction in Plato : dianoia or "logical understanding" (and the sophist can be "wise" in that sense, and Noûs, the Spirit, the vision and intuition of the truth. The real intelligence is necessarily good, although in a higher sense of morality than the common one, which is nevertheless not despicable. Anyway thank you for your good job.
@Helvetica2473 ай бұрын
While what he says is true and prescient, it is hardly overlooked. The political and intellectual community in Europe and beyond have been grappling with the linkages between civilization and barbarism since well before 1945. It’s part of philosophy, theological studies, politics, history, etc, and is expressed in literature and art of all kinds by incredibly well-known figures. Not a revelation. What IS new or of note today, is that despite all this knowledge, we are letting the same thing happen again. Civilized societies are again hotbeds of antisemitism. Historically and theologically in Judaism, the observation goes back as far as ancient Egypt, which was the most civilized nation in the world at the time, yet which enslaved, killed, and expelled its Jews. This blueprint repeated itself through various empires where Jews lived - Persian, Babylonian, Roman and Greek ( bastions of civilization and accomplishment all!) until Germany repeated the pattern. Come WWII it had been dominating European intellectual life and culture for over 100 years and the holocaust was the ultimate “expression” of that dominance. We live in scary times and understanding the past is KEY. There is nothing new under the sun.
@Britton_Thompson3 ай бұрын
I couldn't disagree more. I've always thought the primary reason we focus on the Holocaust is because it occurred in an advanced, Christian, Western nation. I've always considered this the differentiator because the academics & media have always disregarded the similar genocides that occurred in the less advanced Communist nations like the Soviet Union, China, and Cambodia. Even the non-Communist states like Imperial Japan's genocide of the Chinese & other Pacific Islanders in WW2, and the Turkish Empire's genocide of the Armenians in WW1. I think it's why they largely tolerate the barbarism and stated genocides of the Middle East today. The chattering class of the West just seems to regard other civilizations' extermination programs as to be expected. Again, I couldn't disagree more with this speaker. The West's fascination with the Nazi state has always been over the fact someone in the same club as us carried it out. Not the act itself, because the act itself has been going on for time immemorial.

With all due respect, you are very inaccurate about the nature of "AI" - I enjoy your content but let me give you a quick schooling on what AI is and how the media just misrepresents it for fear mongering purposes. By their design computers are fast and very capable of looking at incomprehensible sets of data, then performing simple operations across the entirety of the data sets and/or moving it around the world at ~2/3rds the speed of light, without making mathematical mistakes or sending it to the wrong place. However, AI today is just another iteration of machine automation, it's not about to replace us anytime soon. It's just way better at matrix multiplication now, so for math that can be performed using parallelization as opposed to linear only expression, it's way faster. Long story short you can build models which are very good at performing one highly specific task like comparing faces between a few photos to determine if it's the same person amongst the photos fed into the program. But that same program or model won't be able to determine if a pair of photos of the same tree from two slightly different angles is in fact the same tree.

So over looked that I’ll bet you’ve never even heard of Nazi Germany’s so called “Generalplan Ost”….a “geopolitical objective” drawn up in the 1930s. A central part of the plan was the erasure…of Poland. This is why the war started there, in Sept 39. They changed its name to “Ostland” and started a population replacement programme to simply move Germans IN and everyone else out. Their plan was to “eliminate” Poles and Poland. Poland was to become not even a colony but incorporated into the Reich. During four years they killed, one way or another about 5 million Poles, HALF of whom were Jewish, the other half were not. Hitlers move into War with Russia was ALWAYS a Necessary part of the plan. You don’t have to be a genius to see elements of such things in Zionism.Do you?

What came to mind as I listened to Scalia was a book by José Ortega y Gasset, the Rebellion of the Masses. But, you're right, even more than the specialization that narrows the minds of the modern technocrat, it is a lack of morality that makes horrific events such as the Holocaust possible. Actually, the whole COVID crisis has been a perfect example of immoral imposition.

I wonder what university Justice Scalia would recommend for his daughter today? Certainly none of the Ivies. I expected so much more from the 21st century.

Germany 1930 was a beacon of philosophy and culture. But, it had relegated God to a mere reference of philosophy and culture, among others. If there is Higher morality, at one point, there is no morality at all. Or even worse: an inverted morality, like that of the nazis.

I think the overlooked thing is that in the twenties Germany had the most liberal government on Earth. The Kaiser's government would have cut off Hitler's head in 1924.

What gave me chills was a documentary about the building of a 'temple of peace' shortly before WW2. It may seem like a virtue to seek peace, but this was like a tower of Babel - depending on yor own 'strength and goodness' and falling deep...

when was the last time anyone watched the movie 'Judgment at Nuremberg'?? granted, it's Hollywood, but it is at least a peak in to our past. if we study our past, we can clearly see we are a 1930's Germany. Gestapo and all.

All of these cultural icons he cites were not those who propagated the holocaust. Culture is not always the indication of the normal outlook on life. Often they are the exception. So culture hardly indicates civilization. And all of the German physicists were booted out of Germany, as they were predominantly Jewish. It comes down to this: Human ignorance abounds, and is always possible.

If I reremember correctly he was on a hunting trip in Texas in February all by himself at 86 years old. Hunting season is November and December. Number one rule in hunting is never go alone. All of a sudden he died and there wasn't any investigation. We lost an incredible human being but I can't help but question the circumstances.

The saying "History only repeats itself." is oh so true. Why is this so true? I feel it is because intelligence leaves God out of everything ---as this young man states about the Tree of Good and Evil. You must have God to have morals and understanding of loving your fellow man!!!!

It is shocking that the date on the video is 1997. Justice Scalia 27 years ago saw that universities were not teaching student to think but to think in certain ways. Education and knowledge does not create the attributes of wisdom, which he so eloquently expounded upon, this unfortunately is more true today than ever.

Hence why we have a system of checks and balances. Our founders realized that people can be corrupted to use power oppressively if given the opportunity. We should note which of our two political parties wants to eliminate any checks on its power. Their progressive mission they feel must be implemented "by any means necessary."

What he is saying is part of Jewish history and thinking. It is taught in Jewish schools, heard in Jewish lectures, and emanates regularly from the lips of holocaust survivors, a few of whom are still among us. Unfortunately we did not succeed in educating people as to future dangers.

The big question is, why was this movement bigger than Germany, in countries everywhere the Germans went in civilians were free to attack Jews they did why they weren’t under German propaganda. In some cases Germans had to restore order because of the friction in violence that erupted between Latvians in June, pole n jews. To prevent such a thing from ever happening again we need to understand what these friction points are that seemingly normal Estonian would take revenge on the local jews as soon as order broke down.
