Juan Flores - California Bandito Part 1

This is another video story from my California History interest. In researching CA history, I 1st came across the Juan Flores story in Reminisces of a Ranger By: Horace Bell, who was sheriff of LA. In reading Los Angeles, by Remi Nadeau I came across him again, and again in Bancroft. It was an interesting story to me and I did more research. Wikipedia had an excellent bibliography, between that and various other articles I found, I put this video together. Thank-You for watching!

I do agree you could have been a history professor, David. The story ofJuan is just so interesting. While some wild lives, those banditos provide such a colorful listen. Thanks Janet! Yeah, it's really cool I'm in some of the area where this happened. The escape from San Quentin caught my attention 1st, then his stealing a horse at the San Fernando Mission, that's part of my Sylmar research. So then I was hooked. Thank-You Michael!! I started reading a book about Zorro by Isabele Allende, she also wrote House of Spirits. It's good and starts out a the San Gabriel Mission. It's closer to LA. Pedro Fages was the GOV at the time, and I know most of the historic stuff she's talking about. I've never read a book about him, just comic books, the tv show and the movies. This is one of the best stories i've ever heard in a while. Man there was a lot killing and hangings. Lots of bandits . OMG!! I would go and live with the indians in Canada. Big like my friend

I love the story of Juan Flores, David, although I watched it the wrong way around. I visited Santa Barbara when I was on a trip from Alaska to LA in 2001. The old days were fascinating.. .thanks for this bit of history!

Thanks Dennis! There was actually a lot more...for instance the gun battle in San Buenaventura was a "running gun battle" through town and ended up in someone vineyard. Several banditos killed, wounded and hung. I'd love to be able to get into the archives of newspapers from the day!! I looked at some at CSUN before and would love to do it again.

Thank-You Michael! Things have changed here the last couple of weeks, my mommy is having problems. She had vertigo a couple of years ago, and it's been a steady decline since, she's 87. Life isn't very nice these days, take care my Canadian friend!!

Mornin' Michael!! My mom has skin cancer on her forehead and cheek. She'll be having surgery on Sept. 10. Hopefully they get it all. She turned 87 on the 20th. Sorry to hear about your dad. All we can do is spend time with them. My Pa passed in March of 2012. It sure changes your life. I've been practicing guitar again, I can't say playing, since I'm just torturing my fingers so far. The calluses are getting tougher tho. My Peppermint and Mint are doing best out of my herbs. I'm full of anti-oxidensts. I had 22 year old woman ask how I can be so energetic!! :-) Enjoy your Sunday my friend, and enjoy your dad!!.

@@Dave49erman Thanks David! I will enjoy my parents while i can. Sorry to hear about your Mom. Thank goodness, today, they seem to be able to clear a lot of these kind of cancers. She may have to wear hats and sunscreens now, but i know, for a neighborhood friend who has the same problem. He gets checked regularly and they systematically remove any skin tumours that come up. Hope it goes well. I must remember to eat more antioxidants then!! Congrats on getting the compliment from the 22 year old!! Gotta love that female attention :o) Keep playing your guitar... working up those calouses. Music is good for the soul!!

Muchos Gracias Michael! This one pushed me to write it, as most of my stories do. I ran into Juan several times, than decided to dig deeper. I'm putting together a little story now for a video, about the Canadian geese that fly over. We're part of the Pacific Flyway. I'm not sure when I'll finish, in between work and the Sylmar story. I always get sidetracked. I also need to get some pics of them flying over, then they hang out at a Golf Course near the Wash. That will be easy pics, Enjoy your week Amigo!!
