He really was a kind person. My mum, dad and older brother, who was about 4 years old at the time, met him on the docks waiting to board a boat to France after the '51 Silverstone race. He graciously accepted to hold my brother in his arms for a photo and had a short chat with my dad.

@@hmdwgf I wasn't born at the time so I don't know exactly how it went down but my dad spoke a bit of french and spanish. I imagine it wasn't a very complicated exchange! Just being able to get close and personal with a star like him would be a bit more difficult today.

The 1957 German grand Prix at Nurburgring. Juan Fangio breaking the lap record each of his final nine laps to take the win. Legend. What performance if any tops that?
@hmdwgf2 жыл бұрын
The most impressive thing about Fangio’s accomplishments isn’t his 5 championships, IMO. It’s participating in those insane 15 to 20 day South American open road capital-to-capital races in the 1940s, and winning them.
@derekantill3721 Жыл бұрын
Fangio came to European F 1 racing at an age when today’s F 1 drivers are retiring. Fangio was a true gentleman driver and always raced fairly and whatever team he was racing with he always got the best out of car. A very respected world champion.

That's really no surprise. Everything I've ever read of him said he was an absolute gentleman. Unfortunately, his style has gone out of style. That is missed in today's society (at least by the old guys).

Stirling Moss rated him as the greatest driver , and those were the days when racing was really dangerous , unlike today , when playing dominoes is more hazardous .
@kartikeybhatia1423 Жыл бұрын
Lol racing is still dangerous today, yes not as much as before but that’s because of the safety measures implemented and nothing wrong with that, that’s always meant to happen.
@stuartbritton48114 ай бұрын
It is safer today, yes, of course. Drivers today don't have to be made of the same stuff, now, though. They are not the brave heroes that they should be. They just have stronger neck muscles, be very fit and have computer brains. They don't need to be sportsmen nowadays. They need to conform.and comply with political correction. y@@kartikeybhatia1423
