The word Legend is over-used these days. Jack Brabham was the only man EVER to design his own car and win a Formula One World Drivers Championship with it. He was the pioneer of rear engines. He was part of the Bruce McLaren story too having acted as a father figure for him and smoothed his entry to F1. He was also a gentleman. A modest man who had every right to not be modest. Sir Jack Brabham was a Giant of motor racing and an Australian that makes me proud to be from Australia. One of Australias finest sons. Rest in Peace Sir Jack.

@David O'Reilly I 100% agree with your assessment of the great man and well deserved Knight a modest and approachable guy, even a little shy at times, I remember standing next to him at the podium presentation at Brands Hatch of his two sons Gary and David in about 1988 ,his boys had just won both classes of an F3 race, and their proud father was standing next to me in the crowd, just very unassuming taking photos of his lads, my son who was about 14 at the time was going to try to get the Brabham boys autographs, I said to my son "why don't get the autograph of a three times world champion" Sir Jack was happy to sign my sons book, despite my son having absolutely no idea at that time who he was, a great man.

@LathropLdST3 жыл бұрын
He is. The issue with him was... Everyone else around him were prats (Collins, Hawthorne, a bit Mc Laren) or nobles/gents (Moss, Fangio) He was quite the maverick, so he was not generally liked. Great pilot, but my father called him 'that weasel Brabham!', which was rather unusual for him.

Agreed. He won a title aged 40, and was well-placed early on in the championship in 1970, aged 44!

Sir Donald Bradman - so good, the English had to resort to dangerous bowling tactics, and he still couldn't be beaten. Sir Jack Brabham - so good, he designed, built and drove his own car to a world championship. Aussie legends.

Good stuff. Was hoping it was the documentary I saw on Seven Mate TV in Australia where Jack discussed the development of the Repco V8 race engines. Especially how Jack chose the out of production aluminium small Oldsmobile V8 giving the reason that it had an extra head stud over the similar Buick block that many thought was the basis of the double world championship winning engine.

Nothing about his 4 Indianapolis attempts. He placed 9th in his first attempt in 1960 in a Cooper, which was the first rear-engined Indy car of that era, and which led to the total takeover of rear-engined cars in Indy racing. His other three tries were in Brabhams. Another driver and racing car builder Brabham mentored was Dan Gurney. Gurney had a very promising few years driving for Brabham in F1 before he went on to start building and driving his own Eagle racers. Brabham's cars were immensely successful in F1, but not so much in Indy racing. Gurney's cars were pretty much the opposite .
@indysent85433 жыл бұрын
Brabham did not build as many Indycars as Gurney did but, instead, sold the rights to copy his cars, primarily the BT-11. There were several with one, as a Brawner, winning the 500 and many finishing well.

You had a champion when you had a thorough knowledge of your car... See Graham Hill and Jim Clark... Their Lotuses were made of tough candy, yet they achieved miracles. People like to quote Hamilton's whines about tires... At those times, you could get to the finish line pushing your car because it was undrivable. So legends like Moss made the best out of caramel cars -great driver mediocre car. I see him performing better as an endurance race driver at times, but he was amazing at speed too. His catch was, more often than not, his car.
