Exactly! Or submit off your back! So many options. I don't want to injure myself taking down a younger, skilled guy. lol. I could still easily take down the guy at the bus stop! lol. Especially if he's not paying attention. ;) Just kidding.

I'll be 52 in December, with receiving my Black belt a few months ago. I agree with you 100% regarding takedowns. I refuse to do them, as it's where I have been injured the most. Great video, as usual!!!!!!!

Congrats on your black belt!! I envy you! You really need the right partner to practice them. Even in this video I could have been injured with his acid drop. lol

My first 4 years were in an mma gym and my buddy fought in the UFC.....fast forward 12 years later. So important to teach younger belts control, and breathing and to not hurt their training partner. It is also important for upper belts to learn to let people learn the techniques and not stuff them every time. If they shit talk after practice and say your shit, who cares really ? They all come around at some point. Love these videos.

We need more training partners like you. I just recommended your channel to my training partner. We're both blue belts. The one thing I'm working on is to be less aggressive where it's unnecessary. That's coming from your style.
@Jitsover50

Yes less aggression and more structure and timing. A calm mind will always solve problems more efficiently. I think together we can change jiujitsu culture. Into one of safety and learning. Respect. Thank you for supporting!

Completely agree with you on takedowns. In my opinion, the chief objective for us older grapplers is to stay uninjured. Of course we still do takedowns, but always very carefully because you can’t control gravity. People falling in an uncontrolled manner is dangerous for both parties.
@Jitsover50
@Jitsover50 7 ай бұрын
Exactly Andrew! You need to find a partner who will go 50% on the take downs. Someone who can play more slowly. In my opinion.

BJJ is the best on the ground but if they teach more break falls and do also light sparring on the stand up game it would fill the big gap that cause BJJ practitioners to do cross train in Judo. Judo wil make you better in take downs but also to get your body destroyed.

Nice ankle pick. My opinion is if you are going to do takedowns you have to do them everyday. When you don’t train them consistently, you don’t get the feel for weight distribution and where you are in and out of control. Your advice is excellent for someone whom does not incorporate them into daily or regular training.
@Jitsover50

Hey Dan Good morning. Thank you I love the ankle pick from anywhere! I just find take downs lead to injury. Especially after the age of 30. Many times here the convo switches to applicability in "the streets". I think if people are truly concerned about street fighting they would be better served training boxing or kickboxing combined with a year of BJJ. Most people will live and die without having a street fight. So my thinking is why train take downs and risk a terrible injury. Especially if you could just stand up and box. That being said it is great to learn take downs on. If trained slowly with technique or light resistance. In my humble opinion. This would make a great video. BTW.

@@Jitsover50 I agree about training for the street. Like you, I have extensive stand up training (10 years kickboxing/Okinawa karate). Personally I love stand up wrestling but understand that it is not for most. It has made my ground Game and guard much more aggressive. My front headlock game and snap downs along with my scrambles have improved dramatically as well.

Many of the techniques used in Stand up can also be used on the ground as well. So it all translates. Yes if I were in a real fight I would stand up. @@danielmccarthy9065

another great vid of not only you taking these lower belts under your wing, but also sharing your knowledge with the rest of the world here on youtube. hopefully all of those thinking about starting to train bjj see that there are kind as well as skilled higher belts out there, and not every advanced belt is a bullly/as*shole. i think you and i came up around a time where that was the norm, but thankfully that's been changing, in no small part to guys like yourself. osss

After a certain age it just becomes to dangerous. In a street fight or MMA you could just box and if you get taken down just use Jiu-jitsu.

I don't want anything to with takedowns during live rolls. I'm not a competitor and I'm confident enough in my single and double leg against an untrained person if it came down to it.
