That’s the leucistic sparrow :). I am glad you made it here, I always go to that park. That trail that goes to the middle viewing platform is my fave.

The first time I went to the park was to see a Mandarin duck that was hanging around the wood ducks. He hasn't been seen in a while now. The dock you are standing on at about the 2:26 mark is next to the trees the Bald Eagles sit in a lot. Good job finding the leucistic sparrow. I have only seen it a few times. It is a special sight. Since I live in the Tacoma area, I am careful for when I go up there because the traffic can be awful or worse. In that park I have seen Bobcats, Beavers, Otters, Raccoons, Muskrats, small mammals, turtles, Bald Eagles, Sora, Virginia Rails, Great Blue Heron, Wilson Snipes, Cormorants, Trumpeter Swans (winter only), and every type of ducks you can think of. I know I am leaving out a bunch of other birds. It is the only location I have ever seen a Black Necked Stilt. That caused quite a stir the morning we saw them. They were too far away to get good pictures. Chances are the eagles weren't very far away. There are some trees on the west shore near that they like to sit in as well. Really hard to see and impossible to get pictures of. I am really happy you enjoyed the park.

Jeff - I chose my crappy motel so I could be close to that little park and lake and man o man was it awesome. When I saw the little white sparrow, it was all I could do to remain calm and get as many shots as I could. I was the same with the swans. I ran into 3 other photographers out that day and I did ask about eagles. On the plus side, I did see one here in California this morning way up in the mountains and that was a treat. I have to start calling in tomorrow for jury duty and when that is done, I will be watching the weather for a flight up there again...... as long as the temps stay in the 40s or upper 30s, I am Ok with that. Don't want to shoot when the lakes are frozen. LOL That place really was amazing and it will be something I want to hit again when I go back - as soon as possible. Thank you for sharing your beautiful area. 🙏🤗💖

@@JonnyPink65 I am up at my mother in-laws this weekend. There is snow on the ground and the lakes are still frozen. In the Seattle area and south it is pretty much back to normal. I am going to try for eagles, owls, and hawks in the morning at East 90 Wildlife Area in Skagit near Edison.

I was so fortunate and soo happy to be there. I knew the temps were going to drop and I headed home hoping to beat the ice and the storms. I am planning on going back when the forecast shows at least the 40s and at least one day of sun!!! I will fly out, shoot for two days and fly home! 🙏🤗💖

Hey John, thanks for sharing the privilege of playing with this 840/5.6 combo. I mostly enjoyed the mirrored ducks at 7:53 ;-) When you don't have much light or want magic bokeh, the difference with 800/9 is obvious. But I heard from other pros they often stop down this lens to f8 or f9 when the have enough separation between bird and background. Otherwise (when the bird is rather close) they have the eye in focus but not the beak or other important parts of the bird. I don't have the muscles and money for this, but I'll soon enjoy enjoy about the same reach with the 200-800 😀
@JonnyPink65
@JonnyPink65 9 ай бұрын
Thank you for letting me share. You are absolutely correct - you need light to shoot at F8 or F9. The light here this day was too low for the 200-800 unless I wanted to shoot at 1/100th or so. I like to keep my shutter speed up to minimize motion blur - just my preference. I really , really love the versatility of the 200-800. No lens is perfect - they all have strengths and weakness. I would actually have preferred using the 200-800 LOL - is it so much lighter to carry and hand hold 🙏🤗💖

Thank you!!! When I make it back out there, I will do that. I had planned a boat ride on the Skagit River to photograph eagles but it was canceled. Watching the weather and when it will be sunny for a day or two and at least in the 40s, I will quickly book a flight and head back. BEAUTIFUL area 🙏🤗💖

That was doo cool. All the parks with the little bays that I was pointed to a few days later were rock solid with ice and no birds. A few days had a high of 21 so you lucked out 🥶

I was just there yesterday. I saw a few eagles, mostly juveniles. I've been watching this place for years, and for the first time I saw the osprey nesting box being used. The viewing decks are nice but disappointing at the same time. There's no way to get down to eye level with the birds, you're always shooting down on them. Swans are typically there from about November to February; not many, maybe 15-20. Also, beavers, otters, raccoons, deer....one guy told me he saw a bear. And, of course, the two bobcats a couple winters ago. I've got pics of the leucistic sparrow, or whatever it is, I just call it a bald sparrow. If you're not doing this professionally, then the point is to have fun, and it looks like you're doing just that.

Thank you, thank you!!! I LOVE it there and since I have a two day drive to get there, to me it was special. Will be a stop when I go back in a couple of months. There are so many places I go around here that you cant get eye level or places I would NOT get down on the ground - I get it. Thank you again - will be there in a couple of months. 🙏🤗💖
