I live this movie, at the end you showed 2 pictures, i think the 200-800 shot is the better one. If I have to choose then I go for the 200-800, because I can zoom out
@JonnyPink6559 минут бұрын
Cant go wrong with either. For me, I do like the zoom, but I prefer the weight and focus ring placement on the 800 F11. These out in the field comparisons are fun but not really fair as there are so many variables with light and how it hits the subject. I shoot my zoom at full focal length most of the time and forget that I have a zoom lol. Thank you, thank you. 🙏💖🤗

If I were being honest, Hummer's are the one thing I shoot, that would have been better with my R5, vs. my R7's that I have now. And not only for In Flight (Hover) Hummers, which is probably obvious, but "even" for perched Hummers.... Mainly because I can usually get plenty close enough to Hummers, without the extra reach of an APS-C. For all the other skittish birds I shoot, the APS-C R7's all the way. All these shots you showed were eye bleeding sharp :) Nice work.

I have both lenses and an R3 now. Had an R7. I don't see a difference in clarity in your shots. Amazing! What were you using for shutter in R7, mechanical or electronic. I got rid of my R7 because I was using mechanical and feared the jarring of it on focus. Thanks, as ever.
@JonnyPink65Күн бұрын
Thank you, thank you. I use electronic shutter but keep the sound on so I know I am shooting. I know I get rolling shutter or blur but I really try to keep the ISO as low as I can with the R7 wo work around that limitation. I find that if the ISO is lower, it is a cleaner shot even using the tools we have available. 🙏💖🤗

Photo E was my favorite. I'm seriously considering selling my 200-800. The 800 f/11 is lighter and in my opinion, sharper. The only thing that makes me want to keep the 200-800 is it drives traffic to my channel. Thanks, JP!

Phil - the 800 F11 photo E. Yeah, I like the zoom with the 200-800 but over all, I really prefer the 800 F11 for the way I shoot. I almost never zoom out. And I know it is a small thing but I do use the zoom ring and I cant stand the placement on the 200-800 - too far back for me. And for the price..... both are great but the 800 F11 is actually my favorite. that lens blew me away from the first time i shot it. 🙏💖🤗 PS - I think the stabilization is better on the F11 as well!

I use my Canon 800mm f11 entirely handheld with a pistol grip on a bracket so that the grip is almost under the front element when the lens is retracted. This gives more leverage for keeping it steady enough to be handheld.

I have a 300-800mm f5.6 "Sigzilla" that I absolutely love to use (especially with a SpeedBooster in lower light situations), but the damn thing is so very massively heavy and bulky and cumbersome it is a real chore to go anywhere with it. I bought the Canon 800mm f11 because it was potentially so much more portable. I was then surprised how well it worked. I could easily handhold it and get great shots. The only problem with it is finding your subject so you can begin to take photos due to the very narrow field of view. I has since added a TTartisans RedDot sight and it it a big help. I use the sight to get me "on target", then I just use the lens.
@JonnyPink65Күн бұрын
When that lens first came out, I poo-pooed it up and down. I was asked to review it in one of the comments so I rented it with serious skepticism. I was so blown away, I bought one and it showed up just after the rental went back. It has limitations as does all gear but it is an underrated beast at a fair price. I think I have been shooting long primes so long that I am used to finding my subject MOST of the time. LOL. Like star hopping, I find something close, then slew over to my subject or look over the top of my camera. Glad the red dot works and I have heard others talk about doing the same. If you ever want to shorten the minimum focus distance to use it to shoot closer, you can use 3rd party extension tubes (Canon does not make native RF ones) - full snappy autofocus but you lose infinity focus. I have shot hummingbirds with this doing it that way and even with my 600 F4 because everything was so close. makes the lens just that more versatile.🙏💖🤗
@rayspencer5025Күн бұрын
@JonnyPink65 I got my RF mount JJC extension tubes last December. A funny thing I did not expect was how often I would use this lens for landscape shots. Because I use it hand-held, it is not that uncommon that I will be scanning around with the lens looking for birds, and then I will notice a scenery shot I would have never noticed otherwise. Infact, when I use the Canon 800mm f11 I don't even bother taking binoculars. I just use my lens & camera as a stabilized spottingscope. With my old Sigzilla, it goes on a heavy duty tripod with a heavy duty yoke-style gimbal (none of those fancy, light weight single arm gimbals are strong enough), and I tended not to move it around much

I used to use the 600mm f11 on my R7. It is a great lens and even works well in gloomy weather. But when I bought the 200-800 and saw the bright colors, I immediately realized that it is much better.
@JonnyPink65Күн бұрын
I have not shot the 600 F11 so I can not comment. Yes, the budget lenses do have some color casting that varies from lens to lens, and even depending on the body it is mounted on. All that can be fixed in post or if you are shooting in JPEG, you can set a custom profile for that lens and just jump to it when you pull it out. No set up is perfect - even a $16,000 lens has drawbacks. The 200-800 is a fantastic flexible lens - have fun with it. 🙏💖🤗

@JonnyPink65Күн бұрын
Thank you, thank you. I think overall, the 100-500 as an L lens with the 1.4 extender is still sharper. You only have 700mm at F10 but it is awesome. You lose the zoom though. The 200-800 is versatile but not L glass quality. The 800 F11 is limited but such a fun little lens. I spend money like I have it - no matter what gear you have you want more. I do have another comparison video with these two lenses and showing how quick they each focus using an external recorder so you can see what I do in the viewfinder, but I put that aside to work on landscapes from today. Then, back to that. hopefully it will be up on Thursday. 🙏💖🤗

I just bought the 200-800. The MFD is way better (2.6-10.8ft vs. 19.7ft), and when taking videos (which I prefer), I can zoom out if need be to keep the bird in the frame and add more stabilization in post. I can also use the lens for other animals besides birds, like butterflies or amphibians. I had the Sigma 150-600 c, and this lens feels less front-heavy, so I can handhold it for longer without arm fatigue.
@JonnyPink65Күн бұрын
Awesome. Yes, each has advantages. Some are not able to afford the 200-800 and it may not be available near them. If you to shorten the MFD even shorter, you can add 3rd party extension tubes since Canon does not make native RF ones. They work perfectly, all focus is still snappy but you do lose the infinity focus while they are on there. Makes it even more versatile. 🙏💖🤗

I like the 800 f/11 for casual outings. I tend to be reactionary and take pictures of what I see as I go, rather than setting up in one spot and waiting. With that lens I can set it to auto-ISO and then all I have to worry about is the shutter speed. Easy mode.
@JonnyPink65Күн бұрын
I shoot the EXACT same way. I drag the shutter in low light so the ISO does not go too high, but I let the camera decide what ISO to use. This is ont the old DSLR or film days. I just love being out so what ever I see, I photograph. I may dump it later, but I had fun. 🙏💖🤗

I had the 150-600 Contemporary, and then traded it in in favor of the Sport model. That lens gave really good account on both my 7D Mk II and 1DX Mk III. However, I decided to make the move to mirrorless, so other than an old 300D that's been in my bag for 21 years, I sold all my DSLRs and EF/EF-S lenses. I had waited and waited and waited for the 200-800 to become available, so I bought the 100-500 to tide me over. (And don't you know, literally less than one week after I got the 100-500, the 200-800 was in stock!) I'm only an avid hobbyist, nothing near a pro, but I find that I do like the 100-500 very much. It's unbelievably light (as is the 200-800), and I've gotten good results using the lens on my R5 and R6 Mk II.
@JonnyPink653 күн бұрын
The 100-500 is an L lens and even if you put a 1.4 extender on there, I still think the photos are just a tickle shaper than the 200-800. The difference between F9 and F10 is negligible but you do lose the zoom. The other advantage tot he 100-500 is the super short MFD. Both are awesome lens and I often forget that I have a zoom and just shoot at the max focal length. LOL. The older DSLRs are amazing but the new tech we have at our fingertips allows us to get shots that were pure luck in the past. 🙏💖🤗

@@JonnyPink65 Well put! Regarding your final sentence: Remember the old days of being limited by the amount of exposures on a roll of film? How is it that in some photos you have a rolling shutter and in others not I still don't understand how it works and when it appears and when it doesn't.
@JonnyPink653 күн бұрын
It all has to do with the sensor read out with regards to the place of the wings in movement in relation to....... I have no idea. 😅 When I shoot, it is in small bursts. When I go through the photos, I pick the the best ones that speak to me. Some are perfect and others have crazy rolling shutter but have character so I go with that. I could pick only the perfect ones but then I would miss the others. Rolling shutter is related to speed of the computing going left to right. ALL cameras have it to some degree other than the Sony that is a global shutter and reads all at one time. The faster the computing, the less rolling shutter. The less expensive bodies with slower processors have more rolling shutter but still produce awesome images.. 🙏💖🤗

Johnny Pink thanks for the video. Even though this camera has its shortcomings, it is still cool and modern. I also walk around every day with a 200-800 and shoot. Great, the series with the R3 is impressive. The R7 of course can't do such long series. Your pictures are very beautiful. What cameras do you use now, if you sold the R7?
@JonnyPink653 күн бұрын
Thank you, thank you. I still have my R7 and have no plans to get rid of it. I LOVE it in summer and spring mostly for the little critters. The AF on this just seems glue itself to the eyes of the insects - especially with the short MFD when using the 100-500. That alone is the keeper. As far as which ..... well, yesterday at the beach I had the R7 and 200-800. Was headed out today and debated between the R3 and R5II but the R5II ended up in my bag with the 200-800 LOL. Going to shoot hummingbirds tomorrow I think and still up in the air as to what set up to bring. I am a gear whore who spends money like I have it LOL. Each body has something to offer and also drawbacks or limitations. We just have to figure how much we are will to work around those limitations. The R3 for me is the closest to an amazing body but I wish the sensor was a little bigger and that it had pre-capture - it would be perfect for me at 30 megapixels. The R5II overheats, has a stupidly small buffer and would be better in a bigger body like the R3. The R7 has crazy rolling shutter but the photos are amazing and the color in the raw files are so rich - I really love the R7. The R8 is another of my favorites even with the small buffer - I would take that over the R5II in a heartbeat. Nothing is perfect - we just have to find what works to fit our style. Thanks for letting me ramble and share. 🙏💖🤗 PS - I have MEVER had the R7 overheat even in the middle of summer - the R5II on the other hand - like crazy and it is not a camera for me. I just have not gotten rid of it yet. That is why I think the R5II in a large body would have been better. I love my R7!
@atboarder2 күн бұрын
@@JonnyPink65 Yes, I shot almost two hours of 4K 60 video with the R7 and it did not overheat. I also carefully studied the topic of video overheating, Canon has only three devices where there is no overheating. These are the R7, R5C and R6 mark II. The rest overheat, including the R3 and the R8. Thank you for your detailed and long answer, now I am convinced that the R7 and 200-800 are all that a photographer needs. You have a very rich experience of using many cameras. I only wanted to buy a full frame in the future, of course, to understand how it is better than a APS- C crop sensor. So far I can't understand how much better the quality of the photos will be.
@JonnyPink65Күн бұрын
@@atboarder I am sure the others you mention DO overheat, but they did not for me and that is what I base my opinion on. The R5II overheats quickly - too quickly for me. And as far as the quality of the images - the really magic of a photo comes from the person behind the camera. It does not have to be prefect or completely in focus - just have character that the person behind the lens brings out. Just a tool in the hands of the craftsman and we learn how to work around the limitations that every set has. I just like renting lots of gear to try it and hope my passion shines through!!
