Very nice upload as always. The deep roaring of the quill drive at high speed is something that I love about these units as well as the melodic PWM pulses, it's faintly shared on the gec networkers, though on them it's mostly drowned out by the external-type rotor fan on the hollow-shaft.
@gapthemind--mindthegap85246 ай бұрын
Whats a quill drive, do tell? We need more modernised traction sounding like this tbh. I mean GTO is outdated for sure. But something deep and adjacent like 745 stadler flirts and their deept toned traction drives. Or the japanese trains. Most of their rolling stock has deep set pitches in their traction. Its phenomenal. Even in modern day. Makes our modern uk stock sound dead by comparison. And yeah the thing is the met cam 465s do share some similarities. But they do have some slightly different sounds. But the rotor fan ive noticed definitely noticed as you mentioned, drowns out the screaming motor/drive sounds at 60mph onwards. The screaming sounds take longer to build up on the met cam 465s, so in theory the sounds on the 465s are deeper as the traction screams take longer to hit higher pitch. Infact thats either a motor magnetic scream or drive scream . But it doesent follow the traditional sound of traction drives in the uk. They the overall scream sound on met cams towards hugher speeds however sound very similar to japanese stock. Deep and take longer to reach higher pitch noises. Just with some similar drive components to Alstom stock *as they are alstom* .

@@gapthemind--mindthegap8524 In a quill drive, a short hollow shaft (quill) is attached and fixed to the main electric motor, the axle passes through it, and a large gear is attached to the outside of the hollow shaft via bearings and is driven by the pinion (small gear) of the main electric motor. Several support arms (known as spiders) extend from the wheel, which is press-fitted to the axle, towards the large gear and are attached to the large gear via a buffer spring. The power is transmitted in the following order: motor → small gear → large gear → buffer spring → spiders → wheel. It's the same drive system used on the Stadler FLIRT series you mention. It's very prone to abnormal vibration which I believe is the sound you hear when idling at speed, heightened by the fact that it's a double-reduction gearbox, with a staggering 31:197 gear ratio, something you very rarely see in medium-speed heavy rail applications! I am fairly sure the "screaming" sound comes from the gearbox, the electromagnetic noise of a motor is generally drowned out at high speed - and it wouldn't resonate at certain frequencies like this sound would at all. It's fairly similar to how a 319 or a 455 starts screaming at high speed, can probably be put down to some sort of harmonic resonance that cascades through the whole drivetrain. I'm also glad to see someone else in the UK with an appreciation of Japanese train sounds. They're a goldmine really! :D

Wow, thanks, had no idea they were similar types of components used on 96 stock and flirts. Additionally the gear ratio part makes sense. The part with regards to motor sound is the sync mode from the module and how it echoes through the motor. Thats what i was reffering to initially. Also yes, i love the japanese trian sounds mind you, im not a fan of the quiet ones. Some modern japanese stock has quite audiable traction though. So that's a good thing. Mind telling me what gear ratio they have if thats what makes the deep sounds. They sound like a step down from the stadler geae ratio noise. The keikyu series specifically have a certain repeatable drive sound that is universal mostly in japan. Id love to know what the ratio is.. i want a hypothetical train in the uk to use a similqr gear ratio but be scaled up to go 100-110mph. Would be awsome. The same sounds can be heard from the netherlands train CAF civity NS sprinter. Im also aware that some drives can have multitude of sounds that sound like two different trains at once. For example class 777s sound like a class 395s drive mixed with a class 465 metro cammels gear drive. That being said dont get me started jn super quiet trains , and i mean SUPER quiet..I think aventras are the worst sounding train ive ever come across. They sound like they use mininal gears, and small gears in a tight reduced spaced gear box optimised to not let an ounce of sound come out..very boring. I know there are many modern trains with decently sounding traction drives out there that still output good efficiency but aventras sound like they just dont allow any of that, no complex gear mech sounds..nothing. Id preffer those methods of traction where theres some nice sounds that are controlled and not over the top. Larger gears or a mix of small and large parts. With some sort of space for sound to somewhat oscillate naturally ,without being a mechanical concern. Stadlers, hitachi trains, CAF civitys , and Alstom (the original Alstom not bombadier based Alstom) traction drives tend to be much better sounding even in modern age Alstom australia stock have nice sounding stock. Aventras and desiro cities (uk desiro stock) are the most boring things to date. Give me a class 70x train with some german traction drives from the Desiro HC family id much preffer that beautiful drives sounds than the class 700s. Yuck. I also yearn to hear a train that has a gear drive that matches the exact pitch of the sync mode pitch. Stadler flirts almost match sync motor sounds, but are a step below. Sync mode pitches are so nice, too bad they get drowned out Mostly. Class 385s are a bit of an exception to this though. So a gear drive that can copy that sound. Now that would be nice!!!!

@@gapthemind--mindthegap8524 Gear ratios tend to change between motor assemblies everywhere, often to attain desirable torque/speed requirements. The gear ratio merely affects the how quick the pitch rises when accelerating. I don't know anything about the Aventra drive system, designers are much more opaque about the details of their stock nowadays than they were before (e.g. comparing GEC brochures to Alstom brochures is comparing an encyclopedia with a kids book). I assume that Aventras mostly mask their noise with insulation, as they are actually quite audible on the outside. Drive systems can vary wildly between different trains, I've been surprised before and I'm sure I will be surprised again at what is to be discovered in this esoteric subject xD

But as I was saying on the previously uploaded version of this video, the 365 was the king of deep motor sounds. Again, I don't like their sound at all, but they were much deeper than either the 465 Met-Cam or the 1996 stock.
@gapthemind--mindthegap85247 ай бұрын
Id disagree , the 365s actually had the same pitch. They sounded much slower than the met cams that is all. The 96 stock actually have the deepest GTO in the uk imo or at least sync mode. And their sync mode starts early on so its really deep. Electrostars have likely the second deepest sync mode in the uk. Edit Id wager the electrostars sync mode is deeper, but if you listen carefully the GTO is also combined with another deep noise which is likely some sort of deep electromagnetic scream of the motor or gearbox harmonics. That is really rough and deep in the beginning. Which makes is sound like a DC motor at the start almost. Alot of people assume the 96 stock uses GTO and DC motor because of deep sound. But its an AC motor. wish met cams and other trains sounded deep at the start like this. .
