exactly. if u have focus issues and distractability, that's what you have. it's common in this generation especially, it can be from mental health issues. (the "ADHD is getting more common" side has some points in this; because many people who exhibit focus issues don't actually have it, i really agree with the productivity point at the end and the fact that ADHD medication is so accessible, is actually an issue) but the numerous ways, all this objective data that adds up to it to create a uniquely individual learning style and neurodivergent patterns that directly affect behavior and control issues (due to neurotransmitter differences).... that is ADHD, and it manifests so broadly.

Yeah, I was diagnosed at age 6 and was fully aware of my ADHD, but didn't become aware of more than the basic, most well known symptoms until high school. So I knew it made it difficult for me to focus and get work done without my meds, that my hyperactivity led to me talking a lot and impulsively, and that my sensory issues were related, but in middle school I would be in my accommodations meetings saying things like, "Yeah my ADHD makes it hard, but I also have problems because I procrastinate and manage my time poorly". I didn't understand at the time that those were just additional symptoms of ADHD 😅

I don't like how they didn't talk about how ADHD as a neurological issue, and not just a "social construct." It is a neurological chemical imbalance which is why medicine remedies those deficiencies by adding norepinephrine to regulate our blood pressure, increase arousal/attention etc. Unmedicated, I will literally do so many things that I will crash, and when I do one *thing* for the day, I will get so exhausted that I will need to go back to sleep because my neurons are firing off incorrectly. It is also feeling incredibly anxious around people, and being hyper aware of what you're saying,.. It is even losing your temper and getting SO SO angry, perhaps violent, because of the emotion dysregulation. It's also feeling really overstimulated by loud noises, smells, certain textures! Also.. the hyperfixation on our special interests while neglecting our bodily needs to eat, sleep, rest.. for hours. Also don't even get me started on being able to clean your room, or to pick up after yourself. It's trying as hard as you can to be tidy, but getting frustrated that you forget things! IT is SO MUCH MORE than not being able to focus at school.

exactly what I wanted to say (also: it's a *neurological chemical neurotransmitter imbalance, not hormonal deficiency)

It affects all areas of a persons life, not just academically. Those with ADHD also have an increased risk of addiction, trauma and ptsd, anxiety and depression, as well as a large number of comorbidities. Not to mention a decreased life span compared to those without the condition! I went 20 years undiagnosed and it wreaked havoc on my life. It really really pains me when people don’t understand how serious adhd can be and they assume it’s nothing more than having a few silly little traits like forgetfulness, hyperactivity or poor focus.

ADHD has affected my entire life... from addiction and eating disorders to depression, to anxiety, to panic attacks. I was medically diagnosed at 19 and now that I'm 21 it feels like I'm always fighting myself every day (even with medication) there's so much to unlearn because it has affected my whole identity and self-esteem. There are endless things that come with ADHD like sensitivity rejection, mood swings, unstabilized relationships, ED's, addiction, poor money management, etc... I'm glad we're able to raise more awareness now, and hopefully, we are able to change the system that is not meant for us. I'm still on the journey of accepting it because to me it has been a curse and as much as I try to go with the flow, it alwasy ends up backfiring and it makes me hate myself even more because sometimes I just wish I had a "normal brain"... it's something that I'm still working on with my therapist. I’ve known I have ADHD my whole life. unfortunately the various medications I took as a child caused so many different negative side effects that I resented taking meds and eventually stopped all together around 13. But seeing them answer the question on how much it has changed their lives makes me want to look into a medication that would work for me. I definitely could use some mental clarity in my life 😂

I would love to see those diagnosed with ADHD within the U.S. and the U.K. as the U.K. diagnoses people differently. And how each country treats ADHD- how similar and how different it may be. I'm British, what do you mean the UK diagnoses it differently?
@rolllikeabuffalo94392 жыл бұрын
@@Random-sk6hm Hi!! In the U.S., we have something called a DSM and we are on the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) as of March 2022. In the U.K. the ICD (International Classification of Diseases) is used over the DSM. There are different 'qualifications' to be diagnosed with ADHD. For the ICD, from what I remember, you need to have more symptoms to be diagnosed with ADHD than the DSM. Because of that, the U.K. has a lower percentage of those diagnosed with ADHD and it makes people wonder if it's a culture thing, or if it's being pushed down by different societies/exceptions. But again, I do not know for sure since I did the research paper on it 2 years ago and I do not live in the U.K. But yeah, I hope this helps? :)
@vanessa_lmao82192 жыл бұрын
It's not only used in the UK but a lot of European countries too. It's weird because I remember this American person telling me about my own mental illness without having any qualifications to do so, and the way they discribed my mental illness wasn't the way I was thought about it, so I pointed out the differences in countries and cultures. I'm pretty sure they got confused with another similar disorder tho ahaha.
@boinkadoinkk2 жыл бұрын
@@Random-sk6hm The US diagnoses it more easily than in the UK. For example, in the UK you can't be diagnosed with ADHD if you have childhood trauma or CPTSD, but in the US that doesn't disqualify you from getting an ADHD diagnosis. Also because mental health is so extremely underfunded and stretched thin in the NHS it is generally massively underdiagnosed in the UK because of how difficult it is to even get a professional assessment with a psychiatrist (which is the only person who can diagnose ADHD.)

I got diagnosed with ADHD a couple of months ago along and mild OCD recently. As the years go by it feels like it's getting worse and when I reached out to my family they didn't get it. Luckily my school decided to have a therapist on campus and thats how I got to try my antidepressants out. I was nervous and scared because of all that I heard about them. My friends really helped me and still give me the support I couldn't get from my family and for that I'm super greatful. The meds really help make me feel okay and I haven't this genuinely okay in a long time it gave me a lot to think about. My words to people who have unsupportive families is that there's always a community out there that will accept you for you. Don't be afraid to ask for help from your trusted friends or from a community that understands your struggles. There's hope to feel better all we have to do is keep moving forward, one step at a time. Take care

I'm on adderall now but even with that I've struggled getting myself to even look for work when on the verge of homelessness lol. I haven't had that "this is how normal people's brains work?!" moment yet. Not only that, but it is also disrupting your ability to succeed at school or work. Furthermore, it has to negatively affect your relationships with other people in all areas of your life. I have sever ADD. It’s hard for me to talk about. I was always SO ashamed that I couldn’t just focus. In elementary school I had a teacher fired because she grabbed me by my face and screamed at me. I don’t remember what she said, and I felt a little guilty that she got fired because of me. The level of anxiety that comes with ADD is unreal. It’s the worst when I’m trying to sleep. Most of the time I try and got to bed at 9 but it’s 12 or 2 am by the time I finally lay down and stop moving. And I’ll lay down at 9 but constantly get up and do stuff or pace. It’s really exhausting when people tell you “your just making excuses” or “I have ADHD, your just lazy, I don’t let it be an excuse”. I HATE being this way. I’m lazy during the day and full of energy at night. It’s an exhausting wild life. Not to mention all the addiction I went through later in life when I couldn’t keep up with the doctors on my own. Now I’m unmedicated because I literally can’t keep up with the doctors and everyday life. I’ve recently lost my job so i moved off grid in the woods. I just can’t handle society and people anymore.

Yes, it is getting more recognition now due to societal changes, and, with some small margin of error, only the people who actually have it will receive a diagnosis. I had to do so much research on my own and when at the three month appt I asked him “ what is ADHD is it a learning disability, chemical imbalance, neurological growth issue? Like what causes this. Did I do this to myself ? “ and he sat there looked at me. Didn’t answer and said “ hmm. That’s actually a very interesting question” and then never answered my question. I’ve been struggling for a year now with thinking I am less than because now I’m special needs. I always have been. But now it’s been confirmed and brought to light. I thought my life was how everyone else saw it and 26 years later come to find out I am not “ normal” and having that lack of care after the diagnosis is really hard. The after care is most important for these kinds of conversation and with the way the world is today it’s just not feasible unfortunatley.

After years of being told that I was lazy and that I just need to focus, I think learning this info was very healing for me. I’m so glad that they made this video. I was diagnosed with ADHD during May of this year. I was a senior in high school and I had and have been struggling in school my entire life. It really sucked because I have shown symptoms from such a young age and have continued to. My school would give me detentions for talking out of turn, getting up without asking, and would have regular meetings with my parents and teachers about my academic issues. For the first, yesterday actually, I took medicine for the first time and felt almost at peace (no racing thoughts) and I actually stuck to the plan I had made for the day. I was shocked! I mean like they said, I was like, this is how people who don’t have it live 😂. My mom feels super guilty for not getting me tested when I was younger because she knows I was struggling and have been FOREVER. But she says she felt really bad because my cousin and I both showed similar symptoms but he was diagnosed and I wasn’t because my dad refused to believe that his daughter has “issues”. I think one of the biggest issues people with ADHD encounter (I’m not speaking for everyone just those who relate) is actually the school system. Its built for people who fit a very specific academic lifestyle and it is not fair at all to anyone with a disability. Part of the reason I didn’t do great in school was because I had so many teachers tell me I wasn’t smart enough or they would just put me in tutoring thinking that would solve my struggles. I was bullied in middle school because I couldn’t spell (I have dyslexia as well and a lpd) and that I was hyper or because I was always in “trouble”. And now my confidence is completely ruined even thought I know I’m intelligent. People really to be educated in the topic of mental disabilities because its sad to see people struggle even thought they could do it with ease with just a little guidance.

I can now manage my ADHD in a healthy way and know where my strengths are-- hyperfocusing, being creative, etc. I tend to have problems starting on projects, but once I get going, I'll have lots of ideas. If I'm highly invested and focusing on something, it'll come out high quality. If my "brain fog" starts up like these guys worded it, then it's a lost cause and I could be sitting there for hours trying to write an essay or whatever it is I need to do. ADHD is like that, lol.

I was diagnosed with adhd in 1st grade, which is nice that I’ve always known why im different but I had to take Ritalin for 4 years. It literally made me starve myself and it took away all of my personality. I was so fucning drugged up. Unless my kids asked for meds, i would never ever put them through that.

SAME, I will never put mine through that

i’ve had ADHD diagnosed since like 2nd grade and understood exactly what it meant, but just because you have it, doesn’t mean you need to blame every problem in your life on the “disability” that you have or using it as an excuse.

I'm crying and thinking of professionally getting diagnosed because it's preventing me to achieve my goals and I was so surprised to see nobody agreed.

i know im a year late on this but as a neuro-typical person with an adhd husband, this is so helpful to me. i know he explains things and talks about it openly, but it's nice to see other people talk about it in a different setting. the different stories and perspectives help a lot.

I was honestly so shocked to see everyone disagree on the 'adhd will prevent me from accomplishing goals in the future' question. I'm only 19 and was just recently diagnosed, but it has already GREATLY affected every aspect of my life. And if I were to go on without any form of treatment, it would quite literally destroy my life. I wouldn't be able to be in school, hold a job, manage money/finances, keep myself healthy and fed, be able to keep up with basic hygiene, and so many other things

I struggled because my mother refused to see that I needed to be diagnosed. Although she got herself and my brother diagnosed. I also struggle with anxiety, depression, and avoidance personality disorder. It was so so hard growing up. If I could tell ANYONE something, is if you think that you need mental help, DO NOT listen to anyone but licensed professionals. If i didn't listen to my family or I had more of a supportive family I 100% believe I would have been so much better off earlier in life. I tried everything that wasn't medication, and it wasn't working for me. Took me 30 years to get the help I needed.

I knew something was wrong when as a kid I cried because of how much I wanted to succeed in school... at the same time being unable to hand in any assignments and failing. Being so incredibly frustrated that my teachers thought I didn't care, when in reality I cared more than the majority of students

That was great and so positive! Let's do one about hypersensitivity. That would be interesting how that differs between gender and age. And it would be so important to fight against the stigma.

for me personally - as soon as I recognized what the symptoms of ADHD were - and which ones I have - I started coming up with methods to work against the disorder.

Just got my diagnosis after almost a year or therapy. I wasn't really educated on the matter until 1 year ago. Seeing all these videos of people who have adhd talk about it and describe how they get on with life really helps me. Makes me optimistic about the future.

I think it's hilarious that these ADHD participants all struggled to wait for the "3... 2... 1..." and just wanted to go to the line as soon as they heard the prompt 😂

Finally, I'm watching this video. The answer straight away is NO, we all think differently. I met so many ADHDer who are very different from me, and a few that are similar to me. No , I didn't know I was until i was 19, but I suspected it since I was 16. I don't really use the medication💊 When I was diagnosed, I was in denial at 19 and didn't take the medication 💊 My mum took the hospital after I blacked out, and the nurse and my mum decided to "take me off" my medication 💊. 3. Yes, my family knew something was up with me early on. I was diagnosed with Autism at 11. 4. Not yet learned to manage it. 5. Yes. Agree. I agree with this the first girl opinion. I was very confused until she ran to the other side of the room.

I think I have ADHD, and I think I got it from my mom who is undiagnosed also. Everytime we try to reach out to a therapist or a psychiatrist something comes up with insurance or her just plainly refusing to admit that “the way she’s always been” is due to ADHD. I’m excited to become an adult so I can take myself to an appointment and get diagnosed-many of my friends with ADHD keep telling me they see themselves in me and that I have similar symptoms as them. I just wish I could have something to lean on when my focus isn’t 100% or my grades are failing.

For my son, his underdeveloped executive functioning was what keyed us into the problem. Unfortunately, hyperactivity and lack of focus are the most common things people associate with ADHD. The social struggles cause a lot more issues for many kids who lack emotional regulation and impulse control. Especially as they move into teenage years and beyond
@stellamariss33354 ай бұрын
The main problem with adhd ks the lack of executive functioning. We can’t master executive functioning like other people it’s why we are the way we are in other areas, like lateness, messy, forgetful, trouble organizing. And keeping routines

I am struggling with mine. It makes me feel helpless when I tell myself to focus and get it going. I focus for all of 10 seconds and disappear between the cracks of the floors and wash away into s dim lit room full of nothing and everything. I am held prisoner by what feels like someone else in my mind. I am constantly fighting slipping in and out of unconsciousness. It’s not a super power and it won’t be the end of us. One day at a time yall. Be strong and wake up every morning daring yourself to be better. 🙏🏽❤️
