A lot of early Christian sects revered Judas because they believed that Jesus had asked him to betray him. The general ideal was that Jesus felt that intentionally giving himself up to be killed was too close to suicide, and therefore asked Judas to turn him in in order to take the decision of whether or not the guards arrested him out of his hands. Some of the books held as scripture by these sects discredit the idea that Judas was paid for the betrayal or that he committed suicide afterwards. However, when the gospels were written, somewhere between 80-100 years after the crucifixion, Judas was portrayed as a money hungry man who betrayed Jesus for silver.
@sofialozano11 Жыл бұрын
The gospels were written by Jesus’ disciples (John and Matthew) and their friends (Mark and Luke), meaning unless they lived to be over 120, your chronology is incorrect. Also, considering John and Matthew were disciples, at least two actually met Judas AND lived with him for a while, so they certainly knew him better than many who try to say he was the good guy.

We remember that Judas allegedly betrayed his friend, then committed suicide, then ended up in Hell for eternity. Yeah, I'd say Judas had the harder job. And I'd say that it's a fair question to ask this: What exactly did Judas do to deserve his fate if the capture and sacrifice of Jesus was part of God's Plan?

I've always wondered what happened to Judas in this story. In the New Testament he commits suicide out of guilt, but would he do the same in this world? He did what Jesus told him to do, and understood the reason why Jesus had to die. In addition, he had the assurance that Jesus would rise again in 3 days. Would he still have felt such guilt know that he was doing God's will? Maybe he did, or maybe he was overcome with grief as Jesus' passing. I know he was shown to be alive in the vision Jesus had at the end, but obviously that wasn't real. I'll never know the answer, but I am so curious to know if Judas chose to live after Christ's crucifiction. If he did, then what did he do? If not, then why? What did the others think about what he had done? So many questions...
@napoleonsolo59295 жыл бұрын
Speaking as an Agnostic, I find it very easy to believe Judas would not be able to live with the guilt even knowing that he was doing exactly what Jesus asked of him. You can say you understand the reasons he gives and even agree to it but, once it happens it becomes real and not just words. Could you live with the aftermath of that? I don't think I could.

Judas committed suicide. In the bible Jesus even knows one of his 12 disciples are a devil. He says this to them. But he was referring to Judas.

@@guidestone1392 no. Peter was a conduit for the voice of Satan in that moment. I remember it well, “Lord, Lord this must never happen to you” Jesus turned to Peter “Get thee behind me, Satan…” He recognized the voice of Satan with clear discernment. Satan can speak and work and move through anyone. He is “the prince of the power of the air” This is why we must all be so careful to guard our tongues. To be “Quick to listen, slow to speak…”

The Gnostics revered Judas as the favored Apostle, and believed that Jesus trusted him above all of the others, and even spoke to him about the true nature of God, things he didn't feel that the others were ready to accept. In the Gospel of Judas, there is a scene where Peter suggests they all go to the temple to make a sacrifice, and Jesus simply laughs at him. The others don't understand why Jesus would find making a sacrifice humerous, the only one who laughs with him is Judas, because he had been taught the truth by Jesus. That truth is that the God of the old testiment, who demanded sacrifices, was not the true god. The Gnostics believed that the true God existed outside of the universe and was completely seperate from it, and that Humanity once existed as a part of god, and that all people still have a spark of divinity within them, and that true salvation came when one put aside the world and reconnected with their own divinity (Much like Buddhists believe that all people have the capacity to find enlightenment and break free from the cycle of life and death, thus becoming a Buddha themselves) It was the evil "God" of the old testiment that tricked mankind into worshiping him who found pleasure in death and thus demanded sacrifices of life and blood.

The title is really incorrect, in my opinion. It’s not a betrayal in this scene, or in Gethsemane. Scorsese and Kazantzakis seem to be echoing the earliest Christian traditions in which Christians would have been familiar with a completely different, deterministic view of the story in which Jesus was predestined to be crucified, and Judas was simply “handing over” Jesus to his fate. The trouble comes with the translations from Greek, in which Jesus was “handed over,” rather than betrayed.

Didn't Jesus say in a prophecy to his disciples that one of you will betray me? Imagine following a man who told you he was the son of god, what would you do? Would it be more offensive to not follow his prophecy to make it false, than to follow it to make it true? Isn't a prophecy from a man you consider the son of god more or less of a command? Because the second his prophecy is false is the next second he stops being the son of god.

There was only one need for this movie and it was to usher in too many changes of the original. The adversary does the same to bibles ; put out enough of them and no one can tell the truth from a lie. Jesus is just a man in this version which contradicts the King James Version of the Bible. Ride with the king!
