"Jesus, that was good" seems like the perfect reaction to me, haha! Halford, and frankly, everyone in the band, really gave it their all on Painkiller. And then he went and left the band for a decade! I love it, it's their best album for my tastes. They had been through so much together as a band already by 1990 and they're still out there today!! Amazing!

I have always found this song interesting because you can hear Priest updating their sound by learning from one of the bands that they had inspired, Racer X. Not only had Priest taken the drummer from Racer X (Scott Travis), but you can hear the influence of Paul Gilbert on the guitar solo (especially the swept arpeggio in the first solo and the string skipping lick). Not many bands evolve their sound as much as Priest did, and even fewer have the longevity and open-mindedness to learn from the bands that they had inspired.

Spot on with the analysis, Tommy ! You feel like you've done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson after first hearing that song, don't you ? The lyrics tell the story of the Painkiller, the character featured on the cover of the album, who is a cyborg superhero who saves mankind from destruction . . . . it is heavy metal turned up to 11, almost thrash in it's execution, a masterclass by all concerned, I get goosebumps every time I hear it !

To get the full appreciation for Priest Listen to Rocka Rolla from the the 1st album in 1974 and then compare it this that came out 16 years later. The stratospheric jump in style and skill is remarkable considering the only line up changes in the band to that point were only drummers. This was the 1st album that Scott Travis was on and his playing really advanced their sound tremendously . It is awesome to listen a track from each album in the order they were released and hear the evolution of the band. Priest has done that better than any band I know without losing their fan base. They have had a few hiccups along the way ,but always rebound with a Vengence.

Imagine this machine gun drum intro being the first thing you hear of a new drummer. Scott Travis really made the best impression he could, way to introduce himself. BTW. yes, that was all Rob Halford and he harmonized with himself there. I really love that crescendo with multiple layers of himself. "Louder than an atom bomb" indeed. I have no words to describe how amazing Rob Halford is. He sounds different with every single track, he changes how he sounds mid song. I don't really have the musical ear and my pitch is not exactly great (although I'm working on that) but I have the impression that the guitars always seem to pick up roughly at the same note Rob stops - and the solo ends roughly where Rob will pick up again. Your ear is much much better, so maybe you could check my hypothesis ;) I'd really appreciate it. Funnily the only other band where I have the impression that they did the same thing was Queen and Rob is a major Freddie Mercury fan and goes as far as calling him his idol

The whole album carries that power with it man.. I think if you like that you'll enjoy the album.. Later works have never quite reached that raw impact (as you can imagine) but it paved the way for more great material in context. The Painkiller is indeed humanity's saviour coming to save everyone in our collective darkest hour. It seems like they've carried this character in a similar way as Eddie in Maiden, but yep, you're on the right track.
