It was nice of him to say. I think there was a bit of a misunderstanding. She said she enjoyed her experience 98% of the time, it's just that sometimes she felt she was playing a character that wasn't very nice and it made it hard for her to like the movie. I get how that could rub people the wrong way but it was just her honest opinion after making the film and people really seemed to take it to heart and it caused problems for her career.

She didn't say anything terrible or that she didn't like it, all she said was that she felt her character came off as a nag and that women in movies like that don't need to be portrayed like that, and she was right, and Seth actually took the advice which is why rose byrne and jillian bell were so great in neighbors and the night before.

It didn't come across like that to me except in the scene where she threw him out of the car. Men and women can be irrational sometimes. But Rogan's character was constantly being irrational and that's what made it funny. He was a total idiot and irresponsible. Does that mean it's making a statement about all men? No, it's about a specific character.
@volerasphere
@volerasphere 3 жыл бұрын
No, the problem is she said the movie was sexist, and painted the women as "shrews" while portraying the men as "fun-loving guys." In her mind it portrayed women badly, while she seemingly ignored the fact that it portrayed the men as very immature, lazy and misogynistic. The movie was not sexist at all, because it portrayed both genders as flawed human beings. Not only is the criticism inaccurate, but it's not good to bash a movie that essentially made her career.

I never understood Katherine's rant on the movie. She was given a script and knew damn well what the movie was about, if she was so bothered by it she could've turned down the role.
@moonlily1
@moonlily1 7 жыл бұрын
Sometimes scripts get changed drastically from when the actor first reads it, and changes can be made AFTER the actor accepts the role, such that the finished product is not really what the actor signed on for. For instance, the original script for "Pretty Woman" was a dark movie about a delusional hooker convincing herself that her rich john is in love with her and ends with her getting pushed out of the limo. "The Truth About Cats and Dogs" was originally an indie comedy where Abby doesn't get the guy and Janaene Garafalo hated the romantically optimistic ending and the scene where she had to get pulled by the dog on rollerskates, which wasn't in the original script. That being said I don't know that anything similar happened with "Knocked Up", I'm just saying the project an actor signs onto is sometimes very different from what actually ends up hitting the theaters. I would question why Heigl would have serious issues with 'Knocked Up' as a "sexist" movie and then go on to do 'The Ugly Truth'.

I don't think Hollywood has ever had a strong record of listening to the concerns of female talent during the production of a film. And let's not forget that this was her first major leading role that launched her film career. I highly doubt she had any bargaining power on that set about the direction of her character. And had she voiced it.. Well, we know how that story plays out against women.

She didn't have to apologize basically because she was right. She was a comic actress that got almost no comic lines. Not every actor has the self confidence while shooting to stand up to the director and make complaints, but thats a common problem in Apatow movies that the women come across, well, not funny and pretty abrasive. Maybe thats his experience, but in the sequel that just had that woman who I think is his real life wife it was even worse. She hardly got a funny line and by the end of it Paul Rudd's likeability shot up tenfold just for what he went through on screen. It seems all hollywood family movies have immature goofy adult men and abrasive no nonsense not funny women. I do find women have a different idea of whats funny, but its not like they can't be funny. A funny line especially is a funny line no matter who it comes from.

That was her first lead in a big movie, it was a box office hit as well as with critics. I understood her thought process when it comes to the finished product, and how she thought it painted women as “humorless shrews” but Judd said it best “if anything, it’s about how guys are idiots and how insane it drives women”. I like her in most things I see her in but unfortunately, most things she’s in now are really not good. I suppose this is a good example of “don’t bite the hand that feeds you”. @@lucamolta Seriously? They ruined her character on Greys. And she is bo obligated to like the films. A LOT of actors don't like the roles they took earlier in their careers. But they take them anyways so they can build on it. Most people don't have the luxury of picking whatever they want to do. No one just wakes up and decides they want to work in the hell hole that is Customer Service. But you do it so you gain experience and have something to put on your resume. In an industry where Harvey Weinstein and Robert Downy Jr found success (not that Robert is ANYTHING like that Lovecraftian horror Harvey) it's difficult believe a few comments can get a woman's career stalled. Oh wait that's completely believable.

@@Mini-Toast_ The thing about the Greys Anatomy issue is that it happened during the writers strike so it was a slap in face for her to say she hadn’t been given any good material. There is a diplomatic way to do things. When asked about her romantic comedies she could respond with “I want to focus on doing more non comedic films.” When being nominated for a SAG for her work on Grey’s she could’ve either shut up and accepted the nomination or stated “There are so many more deserving actors who deserve this nomination.” You don’t have to spit in the face of anyone who has given you an opportunity and that’s how her behavior comes across. You don’t have to shit on others to make yourself look good.

I get what you're saying about RDJnr but he was a big time movie star even if he was high in character etc and that bad boy image was you know more accepted in 80s 90s even if it included prison but still its sexism certainly this idea that she was 'entitled' as if rdj and others like him dont act that way though Robert's is a singular character and confidence. Customer service requires so much energy and empathy that even if one decided not to give a shit it would still be hard work. It's funny, people keep saying that Katherine whines about everything and on every set, when in truth the only things she has complained were that the movie Knocked up was "a little bit sexist" and that she didn't think that she was given strong enough material in Season 4 of the Grey's Anatomy for put herself up for consideration of an Emmy Award. Many actors have said WAY WORSE things and are not being slammed for it. And it is true by the way, Katherine was given such a poor stroyline on season 4 that it almost felt like the creator of the show, Shonda Rhimes had something against her even before all the drama. And she probably did, KH had become the star of the show at that point and Shonda Rhimes was not happy that she was taking the limelight of her golden girl, Ellen Pompeo. You know Shonda, it's not Heigl's fault that she is so much better actress than Ellen Pompeo who has never gotten a nomination for any of the big awards. That was very classy of Apatow to say that KH does not need to apologize for anything. Shonda Rhimes could learn from Apatow, instead she is one bitter witch who is trying to make herself look better by slamming Katherine Heigl everytime she gets the chance. Like, good god woman that was 10 years ago, she should let it go already and stop being so bitter. People change and Katherine has apologized to Shonda numerous of times, but she just wont' accept it. That speaks volumes of what kind of person Shonda is.

Actresses are put in a very difficult position. Jobs and parts are super hard to get! But the story lines and characters written for women have been mostly bad for many infinite number of reasons. It's hard for actresses to speak up, because they would be considered difficult. Just imagine if you were given options A, B, C, D, E and they all portrayed women badly in one way or another. Which do you choose? And how do you speak up? Most of these scripts for women are written by men.

Having said that, haven’t you people ever complained about work and gone to your manager and smiled to their faces and faces the day ahead and collected your paycheck. Why is it that when women have an opinion about something it’s always disregarded as sentimental and as though the value of it is any less important than if a guy said something. Judd gave a classy answer but if it were Seth Rogan that had said something I’m curious what his answers would’ve been... meaning does he consider him an equal because their the same gender, and then respond with an actual rebuttal or does he dismisses his claim and say well he was delightful to work for so I don’t know why he has an opinion now.

The problem with K.Up is that KH’s character, & Apatow’s wife as her sis, spend the movie trying to change men and get things their own way (sometimes as a shrew). KH also hooks up with a guy she normally wouldn’t, gets pregnant, and is then embarrassed which puts her in a kind of sl**ty light. The only growth in the movie is Rogan’s character, & not at the behest is the shrewd but his own realizations. So it looks like women make bad choices, get mad when they can’t change someone, and compromise little. Men look like an evolving fun loving species. I get her beef, I get that this may not have been as clear in the script as after production, but it was unprofessional of her to speak out publicly and to do so without really making a case for her feelings

I heard that her mom is one of the helicopter diva parents who made her a nightmare to work with. Heigl is very professional but voiced her opinions when she should have been promoting the movie.

Except now we accept that she was right and Apatow was churning out a lot of shrewish unfunny women characters. Even he agrees seeing as he stopped producing that drek
