Jay Gabbert Judex was supposedly an inspiration for The Shadow who was in turn an inspiration for Batman. When stories of The Shadow were translated in French and other regions, details were changed to turn them into Judex stories.

watch thievery corporation's "is it over"...their music video is amazing and so is the song, and it is based off of this movie:)
Excellent video quality. It's shameful that Franju has not been better served on video. We need JUDEX, THERESE DESQUEROUX, THOMAS THE IMPOSTER, etc. Perhaps Criterion's Eclipse line?

Yes! Where are all of the films? Who's relegated them to litigation limbo?

@arji1982 It's Maurice Jarre orignal score for the film. You can find it on record.

I saw the film about ten years ago at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles -- loved the surreal elements -- it was wonderful and unforgettable! Highly recommend it! I am buying the DVD -- I really searched for it for years!

Disques Cinemusique has just released a CD compilation devoted to the Unpublished French Film Music by Maurice Jarre, including the best excerpts from JUDEX. The new digital recording produced by Robert Lafond is very similar to the original sound track.

If not the finest b&w of that year it's in the same league with two other contenders Ingmar Bergman's WINTER LIGHT and Joseph Losey's THE SERVANT. But JUDEX is probably a more unique film than either of them.

Fun fact, Judex and the Pulp character The Shadow were so similar for the Frenc audience, that when the Shadow got to France and Belgium the stories were, at one point, called not "The Shadow" or "L'Ombre", but got the title of "Judex".

This particular sequence is exquisite, but it seems to have more in common with one of Feuillade's FANTOMAS episodes--can't remember the name of it at the moment, but it's the one that features a masquerade. The men masked as ravens/blackbirds and prominent at 1:00 are the FANTOMAS memory trigger.
