Not only did she chastise him, she found him in contempt for not showing up, then pledged to report him to the bar for misconduct. And there isn't any record of her being reprimanded for her misconduct. Today, May 19, 2024, she is still presiding over court cases. Should have been immediately removed the day this happened.

@justinejackowicz3043lol this is old but the lawyer has to prove it to the court, not the internet. And if those emails never surfaced, they would have definitely said something publicly. The fact this quietly died down leads me to believe the attorney proved it. And even if the emails didn’t get sent because of a breakdown in his office, there’s not much you can do when you’ve had a stroke. The court had breakdowns in communication all the time and expects the public to except it. They have to be understanding when it happens to others.

I have a very close loved one on parole. He was in a horrendous car wreck. He was in the hospital in a coma. The parole department charged him with missing his parole appointment. The judge then dismissed it. Then to add insult to injuy while he was in a coma he was transferred by ambulance to a medical center nearly 145 miles away for more intense medical care. Then parole charged him for being over 50 miles past the county line. Again, the judge dismissed it but REALLY, he's in a coma and parole knew it!

I was in a county lockup and missed a court date. A warrant was issued and I was eventually transported 300 miles to the other county jail. Went to court and that judge was furious with the magistrate and sheriff. She actually doubled the number of days I was (illegally?) held and knocked it off my sentence. I would have preferred to be free that 21 days rather than having 42 days knocked off my house arrest.

I once had a Judge “rail” at me for being late to Court, I was 15 minutes late after being sideswiped by a Truck, reporting it to Police, giving a statement, providing a copy of my rear and dash cams. Phoning the court to have my case delayed. I should note, it was the same Judge who criticised me for “wilfully” allowing the Judge to ask a leading question of a witness, putting words in the mouth of the witness, who I then re-directed to show the answer put in the mouth of the witness was wrong. Some people should never be appointed to the Bench, increasingly Judges are ill educated oafs with insufficient experience.

I was being sued and the day before the first court appearance I got a phone call at 5:30 supposedly from the court clerk telling me that the hearing was postponed. This just sounded suspicious. I googled the caller ID number and the call came from the opposing lawyer's secretary's home phone. I'm sure they were expecting the court to find in their favor because I didn't show up. The look on their faces when I walked into court the next day was priceless. They were totally unprepared.

Secretary should have suffered some repercussion for agreeing to pull that shady stunt for the lawyer (her boss), the lawyer's butt should have been put in a hot place for trying to orchestrate you not showing up, etc. Sanctions , suspension, disbarment ..... something.

First thing to have come out of my mouth when it was my turn to speak would have been the telling of the tale of the phone call, supposedly from a court clerk and then my discovery of the telephone number being that of the suing attorney's office. However, I would not have been going into court without my own legal representation, so actually the appropriate thing to have done would have been to immediately call my attorney ...... and, in the case of me having my own lawyer involved, he/she too surely would have/should have received a matching bogus phone call.

When I was teaching Wills & Trusts at a law school, I knew one of my students was pregnant and due near finals time. I hoped I did not have to prepare a make-up exam but knew it was likely. The best I remember, she delivered the child the day before the scheduled exam.

Sometimes, there would be someone from the middle east or India/Pakistan in the class. Law school exams are graded without knowing who the student is. The student has an exam number and answers the questions on a laptop. The answers are uploaded to the school's computer and printed out by the school all on the same paper using the same font.

It doesn't matter how serious the stroke is. Even a minor stroke needs you to be in hospital *immediately* so that they can make sure the minor stroke doesn't turn into a major one. Even a "false" stroke where you feel weak in one arm and your eye twitches (but it turns out not to be a stroke at all) should be assessed properly and have you in hospital to be checked out **just in case**. If there's any sagging or slurring going on, that's an ambulance call. The judge was utterly wrong to call this out - if she had concerns it wasn't genuine she should have notified the lawyer to come to chambers as soon as he is fit to do so to discuss the matter privately, and preferably to reassign the case to either another member of the law firm or to the next public defender on the list depending on the case in question to minimise the delay involved. But not to call the lawyer out for a potentially lethal or career ending medical issue. The same would go if the lawyer has to phone up *5 minutes before check in* to say they've had a heart attack and are in the back of an ambulance.

My mom was having an ocular migraine ..... the symptoms could have been a stroke ..... but she did end up in the ER and then admitted and put thru a battery of tests and scans to determine if it was a stroke or not. I had a bout of vertigo, I suspected it was vertigo, but my doctor put me thru a battery of tests, etc. to rule out a stroke. In both instances, I heard the phrase "false stroke".

Shall I give you a piece of information to help you understand? All the news reports about this situation left out a key detail that changes everything about why the judge did what she did: This attorney had a history of "failing to come and comeon time" to her courtroom. The judge notes that in the video but all the news reports leave that part out. So in her mind this attorney who has a history of not showing up, didn't show up again and told his client he had a stroke but... not the court. In that situation, most people would be skeptical. It just so happened this time he legit had an issue. This is a boy who cried wolf situation

Steve, have you ever heard of a judge who missed a trial with no excuse? I dated a girl in college whose father was George Warner, a Mississippi Chancery Court judge. One time he set a trial date on the schedule, but didn’t get the word to his clerk to put it on his official calendar. So, the day that trial was set to occur, he had taken the day off to go fishing and he didn’t show up for trial. He found himself in contempt and fined himself $100, then went directly to the clerk and paid it.

Power tripping management. I had to deal with this issue one Monday I was out and let a supervisor know but I didn't call her *personally*, instead her subordinate supervisor let everyone know why... My husband died from heart failure the day before and I found him. I was so hysterical that the first responders asked for a person they could call. I gave them the supervisor's number and she took me to the ER as I was out of my mind and they didn't want me to see him being taken away. She was a friend too. I found out the manager was talking crap and feined ignorance and that I better be back Tuesday. I called HR and lost it. Did I really need to be dealing with this petty crap NOW? I got an apology phone call and 2 weeks leave.

I have personal experience that demonstrates that courts can be dysfunctional. A judge vacated a case against me decades ago and the clerk never bothered to contact me to let me know, so I showed up for the next trial date for the ruling a couple of months later only to find out that there was no hearing scheduled for me that originally was. I knew the date and time. I walked into the courtroom to try and find out what was going on when I could not find my case on the paper schedule posted. The judge was not too happy with the clerk who was supposed to notify me immediately. The clerk shrugged and had an expression on her face like, 'who gives a $hit?'

Almost an opposite thing happened to me. I was the plaintiff. Attorney in Houston called and gave me the court date. I gathered witnesses and drove down from Dallas the night before and put everyone up in a hotel. Everyone shows up in court and the judge asks why we are there. Trial is a different date. Attorney was wrong. And he had the balls to try to charge me for coming to court on the wrong date!

That is almost anywhere now. I had to bring something from the funeral home when my father passed and I needed 5 days for it due to travel time. I think I just brought the little pamphlet that the funeral home does for pretty much every funeral. Steve, the irony of this particular case is that the stroke attorney's client who chased down and shot the "hit and run driver" actually shot a driver who had some sort of a confirmed diabetic stroke himself, and was not running from the accident ... but was unaware of it. To further complicate matters, it was reported that the elderly driver with the medical issue was confused and frightened by this young woman, gun in hand, trying to pull him out of his vehicle and then shooting him! Talk about truth being stranger than fiction!

My grandpa had a few strokes before he passed away and after the first one he was never the same. Strokes aren’t something to take lightly, so even if you aren’t having a stroke but you think you might be, it’s still best to get checked out. Not getting checked out can be the difference between life and death.

I'm pretty sure that the cops would have backed off, immunity doesn't cover removing someone from direct medical care there. Cases with trying to drag a patient out of an ER or similar where they're dealing with that sort of thing can shift to homicide charges for those responsible if anything gets worse or if it means that they can't recover as well. Not always involving judges, but I did end up witnessing some of that when I'd ended up in the ER, a cop was trying to muscle in on one of the other rooms and I could hear the shouting match between the cop that showed up to try to arrest someone for an OD and the docs about it...removing them from needed medical care comes under negligent homicide at best there.

As an update, the defendent in this case was convicted. Because of another high profile case involving a fatal citizen arrest here in Georgia, the State Legislature passed and the Governor signed a bill that very narrowly limits citizen arrest.

Intemperate behavior in a judge is unprofessional and unacceptable. The judge clearly jumped to conclusions without any evidence whatsoever. The rule of law is based on facts. The judge should be removed or disciplined.

I was a juror on a trial that was supposed to start on a Monday. But the defense attorney was in a car accident on the way to court and broke his arm. We were told to go home and call in to see if the trial was to begin. The trial started two days later on Wednesday with the defense attorney's arm in a cast in a sling.

I had a friend who was stalked around a wal mart while he was exchanging a defective nintendo ds or something like that. And after he left he was walking to the bus stop that was in front of a wendys and in the parking lot in the wendys someone hit him in the head and tried to take his game. Which went really really badly for them. They got their jaw broken and head bounced off the asphalt a couple times. The cops showed up and arrested my friend after they pulled him off the guy who was still fighting and trying to hit him. The people in the wendys came out and said no this dude was minding his own business and the guy on the ground came up and hit him in the head and tried to take his stuff. The manager showed the cops the recording and one of the cops told my friend that tenchincally what he had done was like false imprisonment because he held the guy down unless he claimed he was making a citizens arrest, which could do because what happened qualified for that. So thats what happened. They hauled the guy off to the hospital for his rearranged face, and then to jail. At which point he tried to press charges against my friend for aggravated assault. Which was dismissed. He tried to cililly pursue it and it didnt get picked up. He ended up going to prison because he was found guilty of attempted strong arm robbery and agravated assault because he also spit on my friend while they were fighting. My friend is a black belt in karate, so it turns out it is useful in a street fight.... I mean they were feet from the street, and they were fighting. And my friend never once let go of his ds.

Reminds me of a case with the National Labor Relations Board around 2011, think it was Dayton OH area. A sole proprietor landscape business failed to respond to requests to negotiate employees unionizing, less than 10 employees. The estate attorney informed the NLRB the owner did not respond because shortly after the request, the owner had died. NLRB said it was no excuse for not responding.

When I first saw the video of the judge making these comments, I was surprised that the judge would use the opportunity to advise the defendant to seek new counsel. From what I've always heard, judges are hesitant to engage directly with a defendant when their attorney isn't present.

As someone who has had at least 2 strokes it is unreal that a person should not be believed about such a medical emergency. After my first one I was a mess for years. I had no insurance and no medical care. It was horrible. I felt like I was going to die. I'd had a bad seizure also and chewed my tongue up also my whole body hurt so I was in bad shape for a long time.
