Judge Dredd has two feature films from different studios, but what if you want to follow the character in to his comic adventures? We tackle that exact question and discuss the character from the top down.

I think the reason the helmet thing got so much attention in the Stallone version is that it was kind of symbolic of everything that was wrong with the film. When he took the helmet off he shed even the facade of playing Dredd, and from that point on he was just Sly Stallone playing Sly Stallone in a Sly Stallone vehicle.

Word! For somebody who has read a comic series, they can smell it right away when the movie character doesn't mesh with the source material. Even the best attempts can go a little wrong, so for something like Judge Dredd that had several foibles, it stands out as flawed.

if sylvester stallone played rico as well he could have taken off the helmet and acted hammy while as dredd keeping the helmet on and his mouth shut

I am grateful for this interview. I agree COMPLETELY. However, the 1995 movie was the thing that got my attention to Judge Dredd as a comic property so appreciate it. Karl Urban nailed it as the best representation of Dredd. I so wish Dredd could get more exposure to us/U.S. on this side of the pond. Time will tell.

"America" and "Origins" are two stories I wouldn't recommend for newcomers. They are stories that require previous knowledge of the series to get the most out of and America in particular has its power almost entirely diminished if you have no prior history with the Judges. And by starting with CF Vol 5 you are missing two of the best JD epics of all time - Cursed Earth (which should be read BEFORE Origins) and The Day the Law Died (both of which are in Vol 2, which I would personally recommended starting with).

Also Case Files 5 doesn't feature the introduction of Judge Death, that's in Case Files 3. Also also the first half of Case Files 5, the one that everyone recommends, is (besides the Dark Judges story) mostly filler while the talent prepared for the epic to come. Best to bite the bullet and start at the start. 'Krong' is always awesome anyway.

I remember first seeing Dredd when I was 12 in a short strip run in Sydney's 'Daily Telegraph' newspaper in '77. I think that they just wanted to get some futuristic thing going on the back of Star Wars but soon pulled it after they realised how violent it was. But I always loved the early Dredd for its unashamed satire and 'over the topness', but I love the whole lot overall because it does have so many facets and interpretations of the same fictional world. It is also why I tried to push Dredd onto friends who were into superhero comics to show that just a non super human who can be both good and evil is so much more interesting, three dimensional and realistic despite the bizarre settings and scenarios. Also that the whole future setting and its concept was an interesting character in itself, which left Gotham and Metropolis for dead. Edit: Such a pity that something as silly as poor marketing strategy of the 2012 movie means that a sequel movie is unlikely, despite the possibility of a tv series now increasing. So many people I know who love action and sci-fi had never heard of it but really liked it when I showed it to them. But it's so much worse when abortions like The Last Jedi end up getting shoved in our faces instead.

The show of judge dredd is FINALLY getting the green light!! IT BETTER HAVE CARL URBAN OR IM NOT WATCHING IT!!!
@nodiggity94723 жыл бұрын
Urban, as far as I know is still on board with it. And plenty passionate about the character. As are the creative team and studio. And that's what makes the difference. Respecting the canon. Building on it. And exploring the characters without detracting from other iterations. Like Lego Batman. Always understated, but it was a perfect Batman movie. The "Megacity" project will be produced with the same respect and reverance for Dredd, as the Lego Batman people had for Batman. They're not making Dredd the 'main character' of the show either. Its going to be primarily about the City, in the way that Gotham was about the City, compared to Smallville, which was "The Clark Show" really, with all the restrictions a show hung upon one character has. Urban will still be Dredd in it, but there is so much world-building with such a wealth of canon, that making it primarily "Dredd" would be doing the character a disservice. Megacity One is Dredd's Gotham City. Batman can only be the best Batman he can be, in Gotham. And canon already had Batman arrested by Dredd in MC1.
@StoutProper7 жыл бұрын
Suprised you and nobody in the comments mentioned thst Dredd was based on Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry. Hence the attitude and jaw line. Clint would have been perfect to have played Dredd.
@christinefury78396 жыл бұрын
If you watch the 2nd Dirty Harry movie "Magnum Force" you'll see four police officers acting like a vigilante police force but not on their own since they receive orders from a secret committee made up by high-ranking commissioners and law men disillusioned with how the regular law deals with dangerous criminals. One of the writers of Judge Dredd mentioned how he found inspiration in Dirty Harry but wanted to take that character to the logical extreme. In reality the four vigilante cops in Magnum Force already were admirers of Harry Callahan and took his belief to the extreme. They were probably the real template. When they try to make him join their force because "he if anybody would understand" he says they have taken it "too far" and wonders where it will end, "People will get shot for jaywalking?". Although not admitted, probably because Dirty Harry was the protagonist and the vigilante cops were the "villains" , Clint Eastwood's line "Where will this all end?" probably was the inspiration for the writer for Judge Dredd - a future world where cops *would* have the right to enforce the law and deal out punishments accordingly, even for minor offenses. Judge Dredd is notoriously strict with the law enforced it with violence if necessary. He is the kind of character Dirty Harry sees as impossible and bizarre in his own world. The irony is that the vigilante cops of Magnum Force were the "villains" their kind would be judges in the world of Judge Dredd. They're the real inspiration. Clint Eastwood doesn't look anything like Judge Dredd but that is the least of the problems. Mr.Eastwood was already in his mid 60's when the first Judge Dredd movie was made and already too old. He's in his 80's during the 2010's so he's obviously not the actor you'd have in mind now. You'd have to have a Judge Dredd movie filmed around 1980-1984 (when Eastwood was in his 50's) to have him appear as the character. That in turn would have been impossible since aside from Superman no comic characters were transformed into film and aside from Tim Burton's Batman in 1989 there weren't any good comic superhero films until X-men in 2000. What your bringing up with Clint Eastwood is pure speculation that simply doesn't fit the time frame.
@Flakey1015 жыл бұрын
@@christinefury7839 - It may have been speculation but Clint Eastwood was by far the 2000AD fan favourite for a the movie role from the time the Superman film was anounced, up to the 1995 film was done. I disagree with Clint Eastwood being too old in 1995, Dredd was already into his mid fities at that stage, so you simply would have a mid 60s actor playing a mid 50s Dredd.

I dont think that Judge Dredd has become more adult with time to be honest. In general the old comics had much more thought, imagination and satire put into them.
@jebadiahjackson7 жыл бұрын
They were also very monster of the week type of comic, to no fault however. I really liked the freedom the writers had with the earlier JD stories, a freedom that was slowly lost as John Wagner went to colour and slowly faded away as a writer. Early black and white comics were hyper self aware when it came to the politics and that we must not emulate it at all costs.

@@jebadiahjackson Dredd started off with a much less nuanced, far more Fascist character, but very quickly grew into the kind of complex, layered characterwe see now, but one that has always kept the immovable core of Iron that makes Dredd the Judge he's always been. Like, even though he's been through so many different character arcs over the years, his Iron strength of character that showed first in The Cursed Earth has been forged into a literary analagus of an Ulfbert Sword. Made from Valyrian Steel. By a Damascus Smith. In Feudal Japan. Deceptively rusty, and clumsy looking, but . . . .Dredder than Dredd. The fundamental archetypes that make Dredd who he is, have always been constant.

As for Ezquerra , it is very obvious that Dredd's original helmet shape and look was taken from Doctor Who's Ice Warriors own helmet design ! There is even a quote taken word for word uttered by an Ice Warrior AZAXYR on Peladon " You forget, Doctor. Not everyone in the movies got a death sentence. The computer/robot dork in the first movie got a six month sentence for hacking. Then for a parole violation he got five or six years. The newer movie was pretty much all Dredd fighting a gang in their turf. So it was mostly gang members shooting at a Judge, attempted murder of a Judge. If it was more drawn out there would have been more chance to get into petty crime, the only one that stands out from the newer movie is the homeless guy being a vagrant in a residential zone. Punishment was six months if memory serves but because of the homicides he got a warning since murder took priority.

I've started reading 2000 AD again. At present Judge Dredd is the best strip in the comic. When I used to read it about 30 years ago, Dredd was usually 2nd or even 3rd best imo. I used to prefer Slaine or Strontium Dogs. I remember the Stallone film. iirc it was based one of the comic's stories about Dredd having to confront his clone brother, who had gone to the bad. I remember a story where Dredd has been thrown off the force, and has had his face burnt off. We still didn't see anything above his mouth because of the hat he wore. We should never see his face. Whoever sold the film rights should have stipulated that.

Dredd started out simply enforcing The Law. Case Files book 4 begins with the silly old-style stories, but it also has an important lead-in to the Apocalypse war, so I'd start with Case Files 4 if you want to see it in context. Origins had a lead-in story or two in the weekly, as well. Also, the video kind of implies that the "nuclear war the ruins the world" happens in Case Files 5, actually there's multiple nuclear wars, the first one happened "before" the main story (you see it in Origins, when Dredd was still a cadet), then several more have happened since. I think the latest one reduced Mega City One's population to just 50 million (from a peak of 800 million)... which, given it's size, may actually give it a lower population density than the modern-day Tokyo Metropolitan Area, and they certainly don't need "mile-high star scrapers". Also, there's an ever-increasing number of extra stories set in the same world as Dredd. Some of these are a lot more "humanised" than Dredd itself. His cameo apperances in them make him into something like an unstoppable force of nature the characters are swept along in the wake of (or have to get out of the way of!). Anderson has probably has the most solo stories, there's also been a number dealing with Wally Squad, the undercover judges. Of these, I recommend The Simping Detective, it harks back to the old-style Dredd in a way, pure comedy! Only the main character is dressed as a clown throughout XD

Karl Urban played Dredd well. His appearance however deviated greatly from the comics. He looked more like task force as opposed to an appointed judge. Sylvester Stallone's appearance was identical to the comics. His voice, his authoritive mannerisms, and his voice were dead on. His outfit was designed to be over the top with the over stylized eagle shoulder guards to emphasize the law and justice. Even the bike he rode was on par with the original stories. If you put Stallone's Dredd in Urban's film it woulda been classic. Fun fact: Stallone's outfit was designed by Giovanni Versace.

Actually, he was assessing Anderson, who rightly said that the homeless guy should be booked for vagrancy, and sentenced to 7 days in the iso cubes. But Anderson then goes on to say that the murders they had come to investigate should take priority. Dredd then tells the homeless guy to not be there when Dredd gets back. When he is there when the judges return, that's when Dredd goes to arrest him. Then the blast shield drops right on his head.

20:30 maybe Amazon prime instead. Get the studios behind The Boys to make a limited series thereby getting Karl Urban to do both series (or at least temporarily). I heard that Karl is willing to do another Dredd project.

Just one thing, 2000ad -Judge Dredd started 1977 not 1972 (5 March to be nerdy and exact) before 2000ad it was Starlord apart from that, thumbs up.

Glad you approve. Another Dredd video like this one is coming in the not too distant future.

Someone should do a cut and combine Stallones Mega City one with the Urban one, i always thought it looked most like the comics.

Of all the background tracks to choose from, you pick Movie Bob's 80s action track.

There are also some excellent Judge Dredd/Batman crossovers, with illustrious artists like Mike Mignola (Hellboy) and Simon Bisley (Slayne).

Thank you for enlightening me on where to start. I read some stories from the "Complete Case Files" and I was instantly hooked, the robot uprising struck me the most. Don't know whic Case Files it was, a friend lend them too me. Maybe you know.

Coll, glad to be of service. The Robot Uprising I believe is in the first Case File.

I have no idea. But this was the most memorable story for me. I see some similatirties with the Battlestar Galactica reboot there. A story that really made me chuckle, was where Dredd is in pursuit of a comic smuggler ring and at the end they find old 2000AD comics.

Judge Dredd the hero we need not the hero we want

1. We never "need" anything, "necessity" is a myth. All life on this planet could have gone extinct before there were even dinosaurs. 2. The Judges are intended to basically be fascist cops in a fascist police state.

Not sure if the Judge Dredd Mega Collection hard back series is available in America, but if it is I would highly recommend the volume The Life and Crimes of PJ Maybe. Possibly the best recurring Dredd villain after Judge Death.

What is that picture at 10:26 from? Is that a real canon panel of Dredd in pajamas lol?

The comic books have gone the way of most every other successful property, they are meaner, darker and increasingly violent. There hasn't been much ground made in the way of sophisticated storytelling either. More heavily debauched themes don't equate to quality mature content. I think they hit a sweet spot in the '80s and early '90s and gradually went downhill from there. I enjoy the aesthetics and production values of the Stallone film, but it fails because it's a Stallone film first and foremost. And I kinda enjoyed 2012's Dredd; but at the core it's an exercise in gore, and there's more to the Judge Dredd universe. It would be great if somewhere down the line Dredd's world was given some real love, maybe a TV series?

@0:44 you meant to say Karl Urban got it so right, that a federal law has been passed. Stating Only Karl Urban is allowed to portray the physical manifestation of law on the big screen ever again!

I enjoyed the Stallone Judge Dredd film as a film but would like to have seen some things done differently. I don’t personally care that he took his helmet off but artistically if they would have kept it on or when it’s taken off, you never see above his mouth than that would have been cooler. The Dredd movie I loved. I’d also love to see a sequel to it with Karl Urban reprise his role again.

I dunno about the original comics, but the 2012 Dredd seemed to me to also fit right in (or would have) with a lot of the comix I was reading as a young precocious kid/teen in the late 70s and early 80s, such as Heavy Metal and 1984 (the Warren) Mag. Of course, Dredd predates all of that, I believe, [although Metal Hurlant debuted in 1974], and the latter were more likely influenced heavily by the likes of Judge Dredd. It seems quite familiar to me because had it come about much later, it would have fit in very well in the pages of Metal Hurlant or 1984/1994. But of course Dredd predates those titles, and also predates most "cyberpunk" properties and authors (although not seminal "new wave SF" authors such as Harry Harrison, Ballard, Moorcock, Spinrad, Dick, et al.).

I'm trying to buy Judge Dread America but I keep seeing different covers "Judge Dread America" and "Judge Dread in America". Are they both the same book with different covers? The artist and the writer are in both different covers.
