The guns could have been smarter, but that Aspen Penal Colony Matte Painting is impressive. This movie is a staple of 90s popcorn fun.

Most of the effects, as well as the costumes, makeup and sound design, were fantastic. (The flying lawmasters were the low-point....but, that makeup on Mean...holy drokk! the other end of the chart)

I know most everybody loves the Karl Urban movie more, (which it *IS* good), but you have to admit, Armand Assante went balls to the wall with this character. Pure unadulterated movie mega nachos cheese, and I ain't mad about it.

If you want to know what the Rico Dredd character is really like, you should read the book Rico Dredd,the Titan years he is completely different to the character Armand Assante portrayed and it also gives you an insight into why he committed his crimes.

If you're not going to check the package you could at least reactivate the shield the second you hand it to him. Although you would think that the turrets would be programmed to fire on, or at least react in some way to someone shooting a gun.

I call BS, the guns would still have been active since the Warden couldn't issue the necessary voice commands, so how the heck could Rico or the Guards move in there without getting shot as well?

The guns only fire on people outside the radius of the shield area. While the guns were busy firing on the warden, Rico probably took that moment to exit the shield area via the underside of the walkway, where the guns couldn't target him. Then when the guard outside verbally overrode the security measures, the guns were deactivated, allowing them safe passage and for Rico to return above after the guards had passed.

Budget cuts, the guns are only loaded with a few rounds. Seriously though, you could assume they were shutdown when the wannabe stormtroopers overrode security to get in.

When he ordered the shields deactivated and reactivated the turrets, that should have authorized the area that would normally be within the shields to be activate within the range of the turrets. Not to mention the fact that Rico left the shield zone before the security officers had overridden the security protocols and was still not shot. Makes no sense. Other than, maybe, plot armor. Or a piss poor security system, which I highly doubt.

This is some pretty janky mechanics on the auto-guns. Apparently it only works through voice commands, can't determine if a prisoner is being a threat (when Rico pulled out a gun), and cannot identify if the person it is shooting at is a prisoner staff.

Yup, very realistic. Windows XP, Cortana, voice recognition, Google Maps half the time, all work about the same as this. Just wait until the fully automated cars on electric energy come out. Then our voice recognition security systems with turrets that your neighbors will have because "owning guns is too dangerous, we have a new security system that can handle that".

If a ex-Judge who was arrested and had all the rights of a Judge taken, including any DNA coding, yet the Warden of the facility doesn't have that coding then their system is as dumb as those who designed it. Yeah, I'm calling bs. It's plot armor. No other possible explanation makes sense.

Rico Dredd was sent to the penal conoly on Titan where all corrupt judges are sent and not Aspen, just another inaccuracie from badly portrayed Judge Dredd film, Dredd is far better film and nearer to the comic character and Mega City One.

It wasn't a remake. They're both loosely based on the same source material and the second one did a better job of it.
