Oh, the poor guy. He rode his bicycle 15 miles and the dog still ate both his phone and homework. And then the judge wouldn't permit his attempt at emotional manipulation via a photograph of his daughter. Not fair that the judge expects him to follow the law, and oh, the absurdity of expecting him to turn up to his own trial. The dog is against him. Even looking up the dictionary is against him. The judge's mustache is against him, and most especially, reality is against him.

“Well, see, I tried to get out of bed that morning and the sheets were really tight, it took a while to extricate myself, then there was all this personal hygiene stuff I couldn’t get to because I was already starting to be late and then I had to feed the dog but I was out of dog food and I had to make some rice and chicken but then I didn’t have any rice or chicken so I had to get my outside pants on and tie my shoes but then my lace broke and I couldn’t find anything to use so I had to look for my older pair of shoes and they were under some heavy things and I finally found them and got them tied but then I realized the dog wasn’t breathing and probably died several days before so then I was so upset I didn’t know what to do but then I realized I didn’t have to go to the store but I was hungry so I realized that I would have to go to the store but my bicycle tires were low and my pump stem was bent and would get really hot when I tried to inflate them and can you spell meritorious for me???

When his first action is to attempt to sway the court with a picture of his daughter, I knew this was going to be a doozy of a case. I lost count after 11 attempts to pull the victim card. This gentleman is a stunning example of Dunning-Krueger syndrome meets the reality of Judge Simpsons court. I saw shades of Perry Mason, Matlock and Law and Order in his oral arguments.... And then, "Mr. Allen!" happens.

This is civil so he has no right to counsel; many people facing eviction couldn't begin to afford a lawyer, so I guess they have to go pro se. He said he tried to get legal aid but couldn't get any.

I watch these, and every time, I thank all the gods that may be that we never had to deal with eviction when we rented out our place years ago. The worst that ever happened was having to replace part of the roof because the tenant never notified us that it was leaking into his bedroom. Costly? Yeah. But the stuff I see on YT tells me we were lucky for 20 years, and three different sets of tenants.
