I’m a gun owner and I absolutely believe that parents need to be held responsible if their child gets a hold of their gun and hurts somebody or even themselves with it.

Children not having guns sounds like a good idea, given how impulsive they generally tend to be, but waiting till 21 for a drink and a cig doesn't align with me at all. I'm open to changing my mind though.
@DarthBalsamic
@DarthBalsamic 6 жыл бұрын
Piotr Tarasov I use to be on the judges's side here, but I heard from people like yourself, since I chose to hear different points of view as suggested even in this video, and I flipped. I believed they should push it to 21 as well, but it doesn't hold logistically in a number of ways. Your reason is one of them, but there are alot more. Not to mention that raising the age to 21 wouldn't have even worked here. Alot of oversimplification is done with many these days, but we have to get granular. I changed my viewpoints on a few things because I saw the granular arguments.
@lisasmith9311

@tarasov9794
@tarasov9794 6 жыл бұрын
lisa myhre I'm sure that's the case, but the times, values and people's character have changed, maybe you're right though, can't imagine myself using a gun when I was kid. The lethality and ease of use however could cause trouble, kids love to play with toy guns and for one may confuse the real deal for a toy not remotely realizing the consequences. But you made your point, the "individual aspect" and "context of growing up" may have weight in this. So, as to keeping guns in a safe location under legal force, I'm all for it and not yet convinced otherwise. Again, open for debate.

@SgtJoeSmith

adammatrat lol. I'm saying if a 13 year old girl has a baby....that 13 year old has on average 20 years before she is fully mature. Well before mom is mature and responsible the baby is now classified as an adult. And probably has own babies. So instead of adults raising kids she have teens raising kids. When I was in high school prior to columbine....1 girl in whole school got pregnant. And school shootings were a 3 times a year thing. Now 20% of local high school girls are knocked up and school shootings are almost a 3 time a week deal. I can't wait for 15 years from now when current high school students babies are in high school. Maybe school shooting will be a 3 times a day deal in America by then.

There IS lots of talk about alcohol abuse and drinking and driving...lots of awareness and so on. I think the fines and penalties for drinking and driving should be far more severe than they are (here in Canada anyways)...a friend of mine was killed, along with his 5 and 3 year olds and their 14 year old niece (who was babysitting). Going to that funeral and seeing three coffins, 2 of them tiny, was horrific (all the women wailing there was something that haunts my dreams 20 years later) The more awareness and education the better...not doing anything and just sitting there, 'well, people are going to drink and drive anyway so why bother' also applies to guns. Get parents engaged...have serious conversions about proper firearm use...if you think there's enough, do it twice the amount. Do SOMETHING. ..
@alexiatr

Sean Oconnor exactly, I agree alcohol kills a lot of people. You know what, cigarrets and meat are not better, they've been.linked to cancer and many othee diseases, they shouldn't be sold either. Still, that doesn't make guns better by default.

The thing is, in a lot of states you cannot buy a handgun unless you're 21 and the vast majority of gun murders and gun crimes are committed with handguns. You are allowed to purchase a rifle (including the AR-15) at the age of 18 and rifles are used in only a small percentage of gun crimes/murders. So I don't think it's simply an age requirement when the easier to obtain and less restricted rifles are used far less often for crimes/murders than the more difficult to acquire handguns.

Parents have been disconnected from their children. They allow an Xbox or iPad to babysit their children. Allowing them to see and speak to others (violent games and Xbox live adult talk) parents don’t care to engage with their children to see what’s going on with them. I homeschool, I do not allow electronics in my home. My kids see other kids addicted to these devices and look at them like wow these kids are completely disconnected from life. Blame the parents for not knowing what’s up in their child’s life. It’s your right as a parent to pry into their child’s business. Know what’s going on! And don’t feel ashamed or feel like your kid may be mad at you.
@ASmith-jn7kf
@ASmith-jn7kf 6 жыл бұрын
Rachelle Brown I wouldn't call it prying because that's almost ridiculous. It's your job to know where your child is, control the influences and educate them morally. But homeschooling is different obviously. Parents act like teenagers are a separate species that want you out of their life. I wanted my parents more involved but even though we spent a lot of time together, we didn't have cell phones or ipads or video games or cable, and they also had Bible studies with us weekly, they never asked about what was going on with me. It isn't the electronics. It's the parenting.

The problems parents can not be parents any more. Same goes for the teachers. It is sad that kids can not be normal kids. One of my kids friend even told me that her kids can not be outside by their self without someone calling the law on them being outside in their own back yard and they are teenagers. I happen to be behind a school bus one afternoon and notice the bus stopped at the next block to let the kids off. I could next believe what i was seeing. Kids who live in town can not walk to or from school.

As European (Italian) I believe that general public should not be able to wear a gun, but I think that due the story and the current situation in US, 21 year it's a good age to limit the possess of a gun. About school shooting it's a more complicate subject, USA should enter in the 21st cetury and for examble abolish corporal punishments of students in school, in the 19 states that still allow them, it would decrease anger and avoid that teens already unstable totally get nuts.

That includes stripping 18-20 year olds of the right to vote and liability for their own actions, as well as making them ineligible for military service and not requiring them to sign up for the selective service...among other things.

Lost alot of respect. She doesnt even know the legal age to smoke. Then has the audacity to say the age to buy a gun should be higher than 21? Horrible!

What is so bothersome to me is that I feel the Country, not to mention the Media, has become De-sensitized to the school shootings now. This last school shooting was given a quarter of Air time and back to regular programming. It disgusted me. And so.. what does becoming De-sensitized really mean anyway- in this case? Does it mean that there's No solution afterall, that the Shooters win, and that Nothing can be done about it??! I'm Sad, and more Scared than ever for these very, very Innocent "Children." The Adults in Office have let the Children down and because of them, did Not allow these Children enjoy their most Basic Right of feeling Secure, and Safe. SHAME on them and God help them.

Erin Michaels not true. Read the second amendment again. It does not say : anyone can have a gun at any time, regardless of age or criminal record. Nothing in the 2nd amendment restricts the right to restrict access to guns.

I agree - children should not have firearms. However, parents seem to think their child won't grab theirs or get one. They will if you don't talk them out of it. And that IS your job as their parent - to talk to them and find out what's going on for them to think they need a firearm to resolve a problem.

As I've said long ago, weapon detectors need to be in all public places, now. Anyone who wants a gun will likely find a way to get one regardless of age or mental health. Why hasn't this been a priority? WHY?

I don't agree with 21....I agree with either 16 or 18. 16 because we trust children to operate deadly machines at this age or 18 because if you're mature enough to serve our country then you should be allowed to own a gun.

Most every other developed nation doesn't have such high age threshold for making "adult" decisions, USA (21 years) and Japan (20 years) are two of the very few that do. The "21"-thing goes against everything this country is supposed to stand for.

Hand held metals detectors are 29.99 on ebay. The same kind we go through at concerts and sporting events. Some cost less some more. A school can spend 300 for 10 metal detectors and no person should be getting through the doors with a detectable weapon. If theres a problem with such a cheap line of defense they dont want defense for our children. All the authorities that know about a known person of interest with problems should be more aware and not refuse to act to prevent problems.

Ironic that she says this, because when she was young, kids had guns IN SCHOOL! They had Junior High-school and High-school Gun Clubs, they often brought their own guns to school on the bus or in their own vehicles, there were gun advertisements specifically aimed at kids, and (per-capita) Americans had WAY more guns in the home then as well. Yet, we didn’t have school shootings back then.... Think about that.
