Judge Orders Macon Lawyer To Jail, Finds Her In Contempt

Judge Bemon McBride found Macon lawyer Veronica Brinson in contempt of court and sentenced her to be held in the Bibb County jail until she provides documents and information requested in a court case. She'd violated the judge's prior order instructing her to provide the data.

As a defense attorney, she knows what the next procedure would have been in a plea deal. The judge would have questioned the defendant and asked him very pointed questions regarding him entering in this plea. The first question would have been a stumbling block. The judge would have asked if he wanted to enter into this plea. He most likely would have said no. The only thing that happened sooner was the defendant speaking up to the court when he heard what the defense attorney was saying and disagreed with what she was contending were wishes of her client. Yeah, the wheels of justice are going to roll this defense attorney straight into the county jail for contempt. Hope a complaint is also filed with the bar.

Vi Ma Speech class is the only way to improve public speaking. Make sure to take this class when you go to college if you haven’t taken it already. It will not only improve your public speaking in front of people, but you will be able to connect with an audience much easier too

core251 College is one way to learn things but I can say taking ONE speech class will not help you especially people with severe public speaking fears. College can teach you some things while it’s better to learn other things yourself. It’s apparent you’re not a very educated person... how sad. Unlike you I chose to be educated and teach myself things outside of college, maybe if you had then you wouldn’t get so butt hurt when people recommend college courses to improve or learn certain things. Embarrassing.

Take it from a lawyer: this uptight clown show is more geared towards television version of the practice, than anything even mildly relevant to what it means to be a lawyer... I'm nt advocating on behalf of the counsel referenced (don't know who she is or what discovery timeline she apparently violated, etc. But as a practical and logical matter, you can't sentence someone to civil contempt with their release being contingent on them purging what informed the sanctioned violation (i.e., the failure to provide discovery), while compromising their ability to provide the same...: how the * is she supposed to complete and deliver outstanding discovery request(s) (to secure her release...) if she's in jail?

Matt Curley You have your attorney (even if you are an attorney) tell the judge that you will produce the documents in a reasonable timeframe when released. Failure to produce the documents in the timeframe agreed upon lands you back in the pokey for the original contempt charge plus a new contempt charge.

And so many times they don’t use contempt……when a defendant sits in court yells out and uses profanity or even attempts to intimidate a witness and the judge doesn’t call contempt that’s wrong. I’ve seen that a lot….or even when another attorney is rude to the court.

@@chrisamon2988 How? Contempt is contempt no matter who does it. The judge sets the conditions. I once entered a courtroom in uniform and armed. This particular judge had tried to rule that no firearms were allowed. She ordered me to remove my firearm. I refused. She said I was to be held for contempt. I left the courtroom. The silly bitch then tried to go ahead with my case. The Crown demanded a recess which she refused. She even put on the record she was contemplating a fail to appear charge against me. Eventually cooler and smarter heads prevailed and she was transferred to City Hall to do weddings and sign court orders for fire violations, etc. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Freedom of speech is not having a Court judge give jail time to anyone voicing an opinion no matter who it's directed at. Freedom of speech is not being arrested or fined for profanity. A non-respectful remark is part of our freedom of speech.

Your not being jailed for your speech. Your being jailed for disrupting court proceedings. Disorderly conduct statutes are also a limit on speech, as well as harassment and inciting violence or panic. The Supreme Court has held there is a line at which speech stops becoming free. “Your fist ends where my nose begins”.
