Mr. Elking was threatened if he didn't identify Lamar, since he was the only person at the scene of the crime. He testified at the hearing that this was the case, and wrote a letter to his pastor two decades ago stating how badly he felt. It's the detectives and prosecutors who lied.

As a black male I was 17 years old when i was sent to prison for 4 years based on lies, and still I don't think I will ever be able to understand the emotional trauma, and mental state of a person spending 20 plus years in prison for a crime they didn't commit. I will never understand how a GOD could allow such evil creatures/people to gain so much power over others, let alone live amongst us, his children.

It’s a system that rewards the worst behavior by those who sit atop. It sends a clear message to minorities you can be simply picked out and treated like a criminal. The same system was around during slavery.

But it’s common practice to lock up non violent offenders with drug addictions. As long as there’s a war on drugs the police departments get the money instead a war on poverty that requires investment in underserved communities. Meanwhile we have rampant violence and theft in the streets.

Sadly In Missouri, only exonerees cleared based on DNA evidence are eligible for compensation, and the amount is capped at $36,500 per year of imprisonment as of Apr 5, 2022. That's only a lil over 1 Million total. Since the judge tossed his case, he was freed. The state OWES HIM FAR MORE.

I would find everyone that is responsible for putting me there and erase everything they've created (including family) over the last 28 years...All the way down to the grandkids (eye for an eye)! No offense to the judge I understand he has to make his speech and say what he needs to say I find it absolutely abhorrent however the people in the state of Mississippi actually wanted this guy to stay in prison considering the two people that actually committed the crime have been prosecuted and said he had nothing, to do with it. I always thought the explanation should come after. We get that you have a hard job judge but, you are getting paid. Imagine this in the hospital and the trauma surgeon wanting to go deep into how hard the decision is for him to stop the life threatening bleeding in one way vs the other. Maybe you should read up a little more on Lamar Johnson's case. The only evidence the prosecutor really had against him was the testimony, the perjurous testimony of that one witness. Heck, even that prosecutor and arresting detective admitted that without that guy's testimony they likely wouldn't have had any kind of a case against Johnson.

I'm not sure what you mean. Nickerson changed the police report and all 4 people who were initially in the report stated, 17 years later, that they never believed Lamar would do anything like that. Lamar was miles away from the scene, asked the detective to check his phone and pager, and the detectives never did. The real perpetrators often go on to commit other crimes, while the innocent person(s) are put away.
