I love the way judge Stevens and Judge Boyd read out the facts of the case and make the defendants squirm when they ask them to defend their actions and explaining the wider impact on their victims. Far far too many judges rush through the plea without getting the defendant to actually address their actions and the effect on others.

Just because "lawyer" is considered a difficult title to obtain doesn't mean everyone with that title is good at it. When you're bad at being a lawyer you become a PD. A lot of people in these comment sections kind of beat around that fact but that's just how it is.

@@AltCtrlSpud A lot of PDs are excellent lawyers. But these are guys who have been lawyers a long time, and if they were good they would be doing real trial work instead of shagging arraignments. If I were accused of a serious crime that needed to go to trial, I would be looking for a private lawyer with experience as a PD trial lawyer, because they get tons of valuable experience doing that.

Pro-Tip: You do not get charged with and then plead guilty to felony arson because you accidentally threw a cigarette. Accidents happen and sometimes bad things happen. But felony arson conviction shows intent.

Since we only get one chance at this life, I prefer to assume full responsibility for all my actions, unlike these folks who create a significant criminal record while refusing to be responsible for anything, and I strived to provide positive societal benefits. I do not welcome the anarchy these folks create.

That one guy's English was not good enough for him to really articulate what he wanted to say, and Judge Stevens jumped on him immediately. They probably should have had an interpreter for that stage of the trial, just to make sure that he was able to say what he wanted to say.

Their explanations do not make sense. So many people could have lost their lives in a stupid fire. Started out with wanted to burn a roach?😂. Video caught him as well as witness. It has nothing to do with conversion as other post talks about. The word is converted not coversion. A converted vehicle is where you steal a vehicle and switch vin numbers from a wrecked or destroyed vehicle. Again, i did three years in the georgia prison system for this. Its a money maker.

The real reason? The Jefferson County courts have a huge backlog, and also only 2 dedicated felony court judges. They are having to get other judges, "senior" judges, and visiting judges to pick up the slack. Judge Stevens spent nearly an hour yesterday morning assigning. cases to other judges. The DA's office is also overloaded. Texas is great with "tough on crime" pronouncements during the election cycle, but the legislatures elected never come up with more funding.

In reference to your comment at 19:27, most southern judges I've seen don't believe in giving out breaks. They'll give you a fair trial but they also have no problem throwing the book at you. One deputy told me when I was a teenager "There's always room for one more in prison, so keep up the stupid shit you're doing and we'll find you a spot."

I've seen a lot of judges and attorneys who can't speak English either (not judge Stevens). Zero understanding of basic tense agreement, though it seems worse in the south.
