Storage is a losing game. As someone who lost absolutely everything in a house fire, I can tell you what you need. Important documents. Photographs. Expensive or sentimental jewelry. That's it.

Something I learned a long time ago, if something is important to you, you take care of it by yourself. If the storage unit called and said the payment was due I would have paid the entire thing and then sued him or got the money before getting the storage unit or I would have taken out my things and put them in another unit. I would have never left my belongings up to someone like this.

Exactly, the defendant was foolish to leave her family heirlooms in a storage unit that was shared with her ex-brother-in-law. You shouldn't have to share any expenses with exes, unless we are talking about children that you bred together. If those heirlooms were THAT important, you either get another storage unit in your name and pay a smaller price, and if they were small items like jewelry, get a safe deposit box at the bank.

I think she was wrong on this one. The SiL had a perfectly reasonable belief that he could pay. That he didn't and she didn't pay it off and then sue him for it is the issue. Hell, if I knew he wasn't paying I would have been over there moving the family things out well before the bill's due date.
