Even though on the program, she doesn't have the authority she did as an actual Judge sitting on the bench in New York. The people on show sign an arbitration agreement, stating Judge Judy can preside over their case. They also have to dismiss their case that they filed in any other courts and agree to go with JJ decisions on their case. The agreement is legally binding. Judge Judy is an actual lawyer and a judge. Perhaps, do a little research.

She's an independent consultant, probably with an LLC she owns for payments. She pays herself an "income" from that LLC of $20,000 which is what she pays income tax on. The LLC could have, who knows how much money in it, which she doesn't pay "income tax" on as she does on the $20,000 she pays herself. The gray area is within the LLC, and what constitutes "business expenses". And those are taxed differently.
