Apparently, a lot of people. Squatters are everywhere, and landlords have to jump hoops to get rid of them. Which is totally backwards from how it should be.

In Canada (at least in the province where I live) if you have a year lease it automatically renews unless otherwise stated. If they choose not to renew your lease, they have to give you 3 months to move from the end date of the lease. Very thankful for some protections as our building was sold this year and we were quite worried about what the new owner was planning to do with it. Luckily my neighbour and I can both stay but it was a nerve-wracking couple of months.

You don't have to move out when the residential lease is up by default. It's common to just convert month to month with private landlords. If they accept payment it's just considered a month to month lease. If they want you out or to sign a new lease they have to notify you x days in advance per the lease / local laws.

You don’t necessarily have to move out once a lease is up and not renewed. You can become a month to month tenant as long as they aren’t asking you to leave. Matter of fact I have lived places where I either never had a lease or started out with a lease and never renewed it.

I don't know what the plaintiffs are crabbing about. The landlord seems to have fulfilled the obligation of the lease, but for whatever reason didn't want to continue to rent to them. So they had to legally evict them and didn't get their property back for two and a half months. Now, if they left it pristine and paid the rent over that time, they might be able to get the security deposit back. But eviction costs are usually borne by the tenant under the lease terms, which the plaintiffs will have to pay for.

For years I was terrified of being evicted just because I was too annoying to my landlords. There are fortunately laws here against evicting someone unless they're breaching the lease, causing damage or a lot of trouble for the building. I was worried about retaliation for exerting my tenants rights to contest a rent increase (Which is a right I can have) just out of revenge etc. (even though they won).

California is hard to evict people out of your rental property. A friend of mine had a terrible time evicting people who were not supposed to have any pets and had three. They kept moving the pets out when they came to check the house and move them back 8th the property afterwards.
