19 is still waayyyyy too young, compared to a grown 42-year-old. I know people believe in age is just a number and I respect that but personally, age means more than just a number, it is also experience. A 42-year-old man experience life way differently than a 19-year-old lady. I think we should get rid of this 'age is just a number' mindset because it is not healthy. I hate the concept of taking away a woman's agency and autonomy and saying "you cannot date someone X years older than you" BUT... No adult has any business dating a teenager, hell even early twenties. They're in a different place in their lives entirely. No one should be the same person they were 10 years ago. I truly believe after like 37, dating up doesn't make a difference. There is a difference between 30 and 40 still! This isn't a reflection of people who date up. It is entirely a reflection of those who date down. It is predatory behavior. These people have less life experience and less of a grasp on it all. So many men date younger because women (or men, I know it is common in the gay community too) their own age won't put up with their BS. There are more controlling tendencies and there is a skew in power dynamics. Older people tend to have accumulated more wealth in various forms, so they are more secure and can use that as a form of manipulation. It also steals away youth from the younger person and they lose the opportunity to discover themselves because they're with someone with controlling behaviors and it impedes their growth. Now, there are always exceptions and there are some men and women who date younger and it's an egalitarian situation. But I don't feel that is the rule. I am a proud feminist and respect women's right to choose and would never dream of replacing patriarchy and paternalism with myself. But I think, like the new very needed focus on consent, this is important for people to be aware of. Not to mention that there is a disgusting, albeit very small, group that believe pedophilia belongs in the LGBTQ+ umbrella. This age is just a number is very damaging.

I can't and won't judge because when I was 19 I moved in with my 50 year old boyfriend. I was looking to escape my sometimes very toxic and manipulative mother and he was looking for companionship.
