The church in our culture today is much like Israel during the time of the judges. We live in a sinful culture that is constantly trying to get us to conform to their standards. And many Christians have just grown so accustomed to the sinful culture around them that they have become desensitized and apathetic to the sin that is oppressing them.
The birth of Samson is a good reminder to Christians today that God has called us to be set apart for God and different from the rest of the world. However, we have a Judge who is far greater than Samson. We have a Judge who is truly all-powerful and absolutely Holy, Holy, Holy. We have the perfect Judge, our Lord, and Savior Jesus Christ. And through Him and the power of the Holy Spirit, we can overcome the oppression of sin in our lives.
While Samson is not Jesus, there are several ways that he points us to Jesus, especially in this chapter where we learn about his birth. And in each of those ways that we see Jesus, we also see how we can live holy lives in a sinful culture.
This is a sermon based on Judges chapter 13. I preached this message at the Minnehaha Church of Christ in Vancouver Washington on Sunday, January 6, 2019.
